Ohio

The Canes, (minus Brind'Amour, Hedican, Whitney, and LaRose) are in Columbus, Ohio, tonight, not to change the world like Mr. Young's old song says, but to hopefully change the outcome of their woeful powerplay. They have been practicing on it every day, so hopefully they will see some positive results. The game is not scheduled to be shown online, that I am aware of anyway, so we'll have to listen to it on 99.9 FM. Is it just me or does that station have about the weakest signal on the FM dial? Hopefully, that improves too!

I agree, 99.9 has a horrible signal strength. I live walking distance from the RBC Center and can’t pick up the station inside my house. In my car the broadcast quality is barely tolerable. I know this probably has a lot to do with the FCC, but I certainly hope 99.9 boosts their output wattage. Know of anyone we can complain to that will listen?

No problems from my house on 99.9 for the game Tuesday night. Good, clear signal.

I don’t get that station in Wilmington. Do they have a website where I could listen?

Hey John,
You should be able to listen to most games on the NHL website. If you go to scores, it will bring up all the games, and to the right, you will see an icon that will take you to a page that will feed the broadcast on the PC.

Or, to make sure you can hear it all, you can get a reciever from XM, subscribe (cheap per month), and get all games each night wherever you are! I personally love the service, and have enjoyed all the extra hockey programming they have on there as well.

Tonight the signal was great, but sometimes the signal is very weak. (I’m in the Apex area). I have no idea why it can fluctuate like that from time to time.

Not to be a geek but this was a bad move on the Canes behalf… 99.9 is listed as a Class C, 8 watt station. This translates to a station that on its best day, transmits 25-30 miles from the transmitter. Unless they are using boosters or repeaters, this means that if you live more than thirty miles away, you are highly unlikely to get a good signal, and because it is an FM station, the problem is worse. FM waves hit buildings and do not play well with them, or weather. So anything between you and the signal will weaken it, and atmospheric conditions can affect it as well.
The Canes would have been better off to move to a stronger staion on the AM dial. There are some around. WJR out of Detroit can be heard as far as Florida at times, and is quite often heard here in Raliegh. This is because it is a Class A station, 50,000 watts, and is on AM, whose signals can go around and through things much easier, and weather can actually help boost a signal. So throw in the low wattage, the class level, and the obstructions around the area, and well, you have all suffered the consequences. I am sure someone at 99.9 will dispute the facts I gave you (because this is bad PR for them), but the proof is in the pudding. You live close, and you can’t hear it! Low Class, low watts, and on FM. Bad combo.
