Andrew Ladd traded for Tuomo Ruutu
In a move that seemingly came out of thin air, young winger, Andrew Ladd has been traded to Chicago for Tuomo Ruutu. On paper this looks to be about an even trade. Both players have been injury prone and both have been somewhat disappointing since their original draft, although I felt like Ladd was really coming into his own recently.
You never know who will win in a trade like this, but my initial reaction is one of skepticism. Andrew Ladd has been a first class individual every moment that he has been in Carolina. His play was on the rise.
Ruutu on the otherhand is having a bit of a down year, with production of 6 goals and 15 assists in 60 games. That is a lower point per game average than Ladd's 9 goals and 9 assists in just 43 games.
Both players are restricted free agents at the end of this season. Ladd is currently making $984,000 and Ruutu is at $2,250,000.
Could Jim Rutherford be thinking that he has another Sergei Samsonov acquisition here, when he luckily caught lightning in a bottle when he picked up the talented Russian sniper on waivers? Samsonov had very little production in the windy city as well. Perhaps Samsonov and Ruutu can make everyone forget about Ladd as they skate circles around the opposition? We will see.
The rest of the division is getting stronger, especially the Washington Capitals. They acquired goalie Cristobal Huet from Montreal for a 2nd round draft pick. Will that be enough to get them over the Hurricanes? I doubt it, but it certainly does make them stronger. They also added Sergei Fedorov from the Blue Jackets. So much for staying pat!
So far Florida just added Wade Belak from the Leafs and the Thrashers have yet to pull the trigger on their deal(s).
Brad Richards was sent from Tampa to Dallas along with Johan Holmqvist for Mike Smith, Jussi Jokinen, and Jeff Halperin. Color me unimpressed. I think Dallas got the better of that deal.
I will keep an eye on things after I submit my pre-game report for the contest tonight with Jersey. What does everyone think of Ruutu?

I dont know how I feel about the Ruutu for Ladd deal…..your right its kind of a wash on paper but who knows? It seems to me its a nothing lost nothing gained so why even make the trade…..I dont feel like this addresses anything! I would of liked to see us go after Roloson, or Toskala (I heard hes on the block) At least we know what Rolosons capable of (playoff run with Edmonton). Its ashame we have to put up 45 shots so that we can win every game 5-4 or 4-3. At some point Cams (or some goalie) is gonna have to be capable of holding an opponet to 1 or 2 goals. The offense isnt gonna be able to bail him out of every game. Its not often we win 2-1. I hope he comes around soon but right now hes not lookin like a championship goalie.

I took the trade news with a “meh…”.
Ladd’s play has been getting better. I saw him out there contributing more, though still not as strongly as I’d have liked. He did seem to mesh well with the team though.
Ruutu is an unknown for me. There are too many variables that could make or break him down here. Depending on how the Canes decide to use him and overall team chemistry he could go either way. If it were me, I wouldn’t be spending the extra money over Ladd to take him on.

The salary difference is the only thing that’s fishy to me. Otherwise, it may well be a wash. I have to agree that JR must see something in Chicago’s cast-offs that most people don’t.

I’m going to give JR the benefit of the doubt, but I’m not crazy about this based on what I know about the players involved. I’m going to miss seeing Ladd develop, but I really just don’t know much about Ruutu.

Canes depth chart has Ruutu as a 2nd line WING? I thought it was center that we were hurting at This dont make much sense…..and when the hell are we gonna get to meet Patrick Eaves??

Huet is a great pickup for the Caps. Plus they got Fedorov and Cooke. Looks like they are serious about this year. I wonder when Nylander and Clark are coming back.

I like this trade. I’m a big Ruutu fan and I can’t wait to see him come into his own in a Canes sweater. The only thing I don’t like is the big salary difference.

Ruutu not only brings finesse. He’s an aggressive/physical forward who doesn’t mind throwing the gloves.

Ruutu brings some much needed grit and toughness to the Canes. The playoffs are very tough and physical and you need to be able to impose you will as a team, Ruutu will help with that in a way that Ladd could not and so overall I think this was an even trade that was good for the Canes.

Tyler…did you just become a Hurricanes fan? We do not need Roli or Huet neither have the credetials that Wardo does…have a little faith and try not to sound like a bandwagon guy…

JRS are you kidding me? I sound like a bandwagon guy? You sound like you just jumped on the Camwagon when all of a sudden were winning. Do not forget that most of our wins involve us scoring 5 goals. Cam floats on the .900 line, and has almost 3.00 GAA! Thats not gonna cut it. Hes a career .896, and 3.04 And I do not care about Huets “credentials”, I care that hes a .916 save pctg, and a 2.40 gaa, he represented the East All stars last year. The worst year hes ever had was a .907, look him up, only one year in his career has he given up more than 2.56 gaa. Do you even watch the games Newsflash, were at the bottom of the league in Goals against and save percentage! Do you not remember Jan 2nd?? Cam lets in 5 goals on 14 shots in an OT loss to Atlanta? Cam is not as consistant as he needs to be. He was not ready to be the starter when he was given the job. Have you seen Gerbers numbers lately? He plays for a winning team by the way and hes a .911 with 2.68 gaa. Dont get me wrong I like cam and hope hes here for a while, but realistically, i’d have liked for us to get a solid backup or someone to share starts with him. And HUET or Roli could of been it. You ride your Camwagon all you want, But dont ever associate me with “bandwagon”.

JR has done a good job trading for players that will have future potential for the canes and deserves credit. I was a fan of Ladd and was enjoying his play of late, but it seemed like he was not progressing fast enough to be of real use to us. The last thing canes fans need is another Bates Bataglia whom we keep around for ever hoping he will one day bloom into a superstar. Ladd will get a fresh start in Chicago and hopefully Ruutu will stay healthy and realize the potential he showed in his rookie season. I Believe he is in fact a good yong player and He helps our needs at center for the time being.

I think it was a good thing about Ruutu being traded because he didn’t score that many goals and that meant it was hurting the team. Plus Ladd has been doing pretty good for the hawks since he’s been traded. He’s a big body. And he makes more room on the ice for our goal scorers.

Ruutu should have been traded because all he was doing was making it harder to skate out there!
