Back to the Future - Blogging in the News

Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis was interviewed by XM radio this morning. For those of you unfamiliar with him or new to this blog, Leonsis is very supportive to Caps bloggers in the DC area and allows many of them full team access, equal to what professional journalists enjoy with the team. When asked about his bloggers and blogging in general, the electronic savvy owner was quick to defend his strategy concerning the new media.

During the interview he was quoted as saying, "I think any teams that disregard bloggers do so at their own peril." Strong words, but who am I to argue with the media mogul? Thanks to Kukla's Korner, you can listen to the interview here. Mr. Leonsis also has his own blog, "Ted's Take" which is linked here.

A big thanks to Mr. Leonsis for recognizing a fresh perspective. I think some journalists can be so guilty of towing the company (or league) line that having a fresh set of eyes is priceless. I love hearing other people’s perspectives from games and individual plays. I think some of the hockey journalist staples, like Don Cherry, have become sort of a joke, since they don’t seem to be able to separate themselves and go back to a fan’s point of view.

Interestingly enough, on the same subject, I think ESPN has actually gotten better at analysis since they are no longer carrying the games. They seem a little more objective. At least they can recap games and give power ranking without stooping to terms like “Southleast” as The Hockey News has. Thanks for saving me the $$ on the subscription for next season. I’ll just stick to my weekly John Buccigross column, since the Hockey News has made it clear they don’t want my money. [/rant]
