American Woman - USA Ladies Win Gold

(photo from USA Hockey)

The USA women's hockey team beat Team Canada by a score of 4-3, to earn the gold medal in the IIHF World Championships in China on Saturday. The American women finished the tournament at 4-0-1 and also beat Canada 4-2, on Thursday to qualify for the championship game.

Can anyone remember the last time an American hockey team beat a Canadian hockey team in a tournament of this magnitude, 2 times in a row? Hopefully, this weekend helped to soothe the sting of disappointment the ladies suffered during the 2006 Olympics when they failed to reach the gold medal game.

Jenny Potter and Natalie Darwitz each had 2 goals to lead the Americans. Darwitz also had 2 goals in Thursday's game and earned tournament MVP honors. Angela Ruggiero of "Apprentice" fame won the Directorate Award as the tournament's best defenseman.

Now can the men duplicate the feat next month in Canada?

For more information, check out this link from USA Hockey. Congratulations ladies!

Thanks Bubba! This post was just what my 9 year old daughter (very liberated) needed. She is always asking why women don’t play in the NHL, and I can say that any dad with a daughter that is a fan of hockey, has faced this crossroads in life! I was so excited to show her this post and she was very proud! It’s a tough job having a Caniac Daughter (and yes, she loves the Canes over the Wings, but respectfully)! ;)

Again, Thanks!

Sean-

Glad she enjoyed it!

I have a special interest in women’s hockey because my daughter plays. I must admit before she started playing, I never thought that watching girls play would be the least bit interesting to me, but over the years I have had the pleasure of watching some thrilling and heart-stopping games. Some of these local girls can really skate and play.

You should get your daughter on skates. Email me if you want some info.

Bubba-
Have you seen the Trailblazers? Their goalie used to play in my league, and she is just incredible. She is one of the only goalies I have never been able to put a puck past in my league games. I have played with and against women, and had the opportunity to watch our last Olympic squad play in a fundraiser against celebrities when I worked in NYC. Once the equipment is on, it is Hockey. Nothing else matters. I would love for my 5 year old daughter to pick it up, as well. She watches my games and likes Eric Staal, but is afraid when skating. Any advice?

I am familiar with the Trailblazers, (and have a link to their site), but I don’t know any of them personally.

I think slow and easy would be best with your daughter. Age 5 seems a bit young, but each child is different and advances at their own speed.

Like most females, she will probably let you know what is best for her… :-)
