Gleason Re-ups for 4 - Darcy Hordichuk Next
The Carolina Hurricanes just announced that they signed defenseman Tim Gleason to a 4 year deal today. The contract will pay Gleason a total of 11 million over a 4 year period. (the annual payout is 2M in 2009, 2.5M in 2010, 3M in 2011, and 3.5M in 2012. )
It was also announced that the team traded their 5th round pick in 2009 to Nashville for the rights to tough customer, Darcy Hordichuk.
That's not good news for Wade Brookbank fans.
More about these deals later today.

Actually, Hordichuk looks like a good guy, at least off the ice. Involved in lots of charities and seems personable. Check out www.darcyhordichuk.com.
All I know about his on ice performance is that he’s a “tough guy.”
This pickup may be about the appearance of toughness as well as having a good locker room guy, and that’s it.

he might be a great person, but my main concern is how he fits onto the hockey club. Did we really need to give up a draft pick to acquire the negotiating rights to a pending free agent Hordichuk? Are people really lined up around the block to sign this guy?

you might be right Benjamin… but I like Hordichuk. He has a LOT more grit then Brookbank… and seems to be a guy that will fit in perfectly with the ’Canes Community.

That bothers me a little bit too, Ben. I was just about to write a post blasting the Lightning for trading viable assets just to “acquire the rights” to Vinnie Prospal! I mean, since when is Prospal such a hot commodity that you can’t wait until July 1st to sign him, and not give up anything?
Now the Canes do something similar for Hordichuk. JR must have really wanted him.

I am worried about how he’ll fit in as well – and trying to figure out WHY JR would trade for negotiating rights. Like I said, he appears to be a tough, stand up for your teammates, locker room type of guy. The way the season ended & the way those exit interviews went, it seems like JR is trying to send a message to the team, other teams, and fans.
Then again, I cold be completely wrong. I have been, especially when it comes to guessing what is going on in GM’s heads.

Well, if we don’t sign him, we get Nashville’s 5th round pick in 2009 or 2010. So, really, they are just swapping picks for the right to negotiate with him before anyone else. If it works out, it’s like giving up a 5th round pick for him. If it doesn’t work out, you’ve just deferred that 5th round pick for a year or two. It’s not really a bad thing, IMHO. Perplexing maybe, but not really bad…

except you could have waited and not given up any picks at all and negotiated on july 1. particularly since this is such a deep draft.
