Joni Pitkanen Signs for Three Years

The Carolina Hurricanes just announced the signing of recently acquired defenseman Joni Pitkanen to a three year deal worth 12 million. The 24 year old will receive 3.5M in year one, 4M in year two, and 4.5M in year three.

This looks like a reasonable signing. More later....

not a bad deal ESPECIALLY considering that Jeff Finger is making $3.5M this season for the Leafs!!!!

Well, the D got bigger – the 2 signed today are no smaller than 6’2". I hope they can hit…

Bubba, thanks for keeping up with all of this. I don’t comment here too often anymore but I still read it every day. You are my primary source of Canes news, and I appreciate your commentary on everything too.

Really sad to see Cole go, but I’m excited to see what this team can do next season. It should be a lot of fun I think.

That’s actually…reasonable! With the crazy money flying everywhere, I was thinking Pitkanen was going to hold them hostage for at least $5M.

Why did JR do that?
Cole was one of the best offensive player on this team, and he trades him for a player that never proved himself to the NHL.Usually when you keep a young player for only one year in your team, this means that this player does not have the right attributes to stay into professionnal hockey. It’s a shame to have traded one of the greatest stars on this team to a third liner defenceman.

The other bad news is that Rutherford even had the idea to give him a big contract. He has now the second biggest contract of the team(the first one being Staal).Jim Rutherford should make a book entitled “How to easily waste money”. He had to give a big contract to Ruutu and now he has to give one to Pitkanen.I hope that soon Jim Rutherford could be fired to let someone else more qualified than him do the job of gm.

Oliver B – in addition to what everyone else said, Pitkanen is entering his 4th year in the NHL.

Let’s be real Oliver… Pitkanen is a 40+ point a year defensemen.. and even though he didn’t do as well last year, look at where his team placed… he did well with what he had to work with. I too am sad to see Cole leave, but I am alright with the defensemen that we got.
