Canes Get Kudos On Draft

Mark Seidel, the chief scout for North American Central Scouting, gave the Hurricanes an A- in his Hockey News blog. Los Angeles and the Islanders received an A+; Atlanta, St. Louis, the Rangers and Phoenix received A's; and Florida, like Carolina, got an A-.

Seidel applauded the amount of skill Carolina drafted, but thinks they'll need to supplement it with size down the line. He also thinks the Canes may have found a steal with unorthodox, but effective, netminder Mike Murphy.

I called the Carolina Hurricanes/RBC a few weeks ago and asked when tickets were to go on sale, the lady told me no specific date was confirmed but it would be mid september. She also told me it wasnt confirmed but pretty much definite that they were also gonna be doing the $9.99 day-of upper goal tickets again.

the islanders got an A+ for passing on Filatov?

I guess they wanted to keep their “no one on the team scores more than 60 pts” streak alive.

But they got Petrov at 73.

by Cory on Aug 20, 2008 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

i don’t think that makes up for it.

I think that it will end up hurting them even more passing on Luke Schenn. Toronto seemed pretty happy to get him.

But I agree, I was surprised to see the Islanders rating. Apparently quantity is better than quality.

I’m going to have to see Filatov in action before I’m sold … the kid is short and rail-thin. I know my game plan against him — hit, hit and more hit.

Watch how Sutter defends against that, he’s got a bullseye on his back and front and side and stick and probably his ride. He’s a tad taller, but I think Chara could put a puck through him if he were dumb enough to get in the way. I agree to wait and see, but Filatov looks good as does Sutter. I like Sutter more, but they are both itty bitty targets and are going to deal with it or die trying.

The islanders get an A+, musta been allowed Cliff’s notes or was blowin’ the prof.
L.A. has a shot at takin’ them!!

Man, that’s fightin’ words…

So they drafted a bit, so did LA. Both clubs suck, BFD.

But Sutter’s tough and 6’2" … ask Cherapanov. But if you go by NHL rosters, Filatov is 6’, 172 … two pounds more than Sutter’s current listing. There is NO way Filatov is 172. None … he’s a sprite (and Sutter’s more than 170, too …. maybe not by much, but he is). From what I’ve seen, Filatov’s immensely talented, but so small.

Kinda my point, they both are in the same boat. Start pounding cheeseburgers and live in the weight room. I wonder if an ass like Avery could even hit one of those guys with out wearing them like a wet rag.

Other side of the coin, they both skate like they were born on ice and seem to have a good internal radar on the ice.

I dunno, I hope they all play great and Avery get’s mono.

I’m going up to a little place I have in the mountains of Va. so you are going to have suck it up and plod along without my guidance for a few days as I drink beer and tend my Eden.

I’m sure I’ll be missed.

Like an ass pimple or hemorrhoid.

Back in your grill on Sunday, but will visit in the morning before I leave incase someone needs…..

well, just in case..

;-)

Hasta la bye bye

Well, a lot of us have seen Filatov in action, and don’t consider him a sprite. If you haven’t seen him, then don’t knock him…

by repenttokyo on Aug 20, 2008 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

I said I’ve seen him (no one here, myself included, has access to a huge sampling of his skills, unless they’re roaming Russia) and he’s small. I’m not saying he’s not competitive or mentally tough. I’m using sprite to describe his size. There’s nothing to him whatsoever. I’ve seen Sutter w/o his shirt on in the locker room and his upper body is definitely lacking, too … but he’s starting to look like a man, the way he’s built, the way he carries himself, how strng he is on his skates. While I haven’t seen Filatov up close like that (tho did seem him in his duds at the draft on TV), he still looks like a kid. I really don’t know if he could stick with Columbus this year and make it through the year without getting hurt or wearing down. The physicality of the game in N.A., coupled with the numbers of games, is a huge adjustment. I like the guy, like his future (he was No. 4 on my board) … but he needs to prove he can take on the grind. IMO, there’s no comparing him and Sutter as far as frame … they’re completely different body types.

Yup, I’m up and drinking a little 12 yr old McCallen. Hoping to get molested by a twelve yearold, man that’s sick.

Anyway, lot of cliche’ type sayings about how much a dog fights or much fight is in the dog, etc.

Two serious points.
1. Mass- many laws of physics revolve around it and when human flesh is invloved in an equation with mass the less flesh, the worse off it is almost always.

2. Bruce Lee was about 5’7" or 8 and was around a 135lb fighter. He never skated as far as I know, but I’d put him up against LaRoque, Avery and the rest of the NHL. He had presence and attitude along with a vast skill.

If you take those two points and apply them. BTW, they have nothing to do with fighting. If you apply them to the high level of skill and desire and the clubs around them and add the ( I hope) veteran NHL player skills of a supporting cast I believe one can take alot of mass out of the equation.

Matt Cullen, blew it. I think he’s a great player and he made one little not pay attention mistake and he’s payed for it for quite some time now. What will he tell Sutter? What’s Filatov gonna hear?

It’s like comparing Cole to LaRose. Cole had mass and could plow through insane stuff with mass and talent. LaRose had/has less talent and size, but I think he shows up with a lot more heart and drive every night. He’s been crushed, he’s also whizzed right by all the brutes and made stuff happen.

Size rules in Sumo and the like. Bret Hedican could kick Kristy’s ass….if he could catch her. There lies the rub. That’s why Gretz ruled, he knew who was gonna kill him and when and inbetween those tries he destroyed whole teams with his talent.

The skill will be the desiding factor. One evil hit can end a career.
Hell I was worried about Staal, he looked like a stork his rookie year and like he could be snapped in half. Turned out he could break the back of a whole team with smart play. That and he put some ass on.

Anyway, gonna pour another one and go watch some boob tube.

Didn’t you just use a Chara slapshot ripping through Sutter as an example? LOL.

Yes, Chara had the hardest shot at All-Star game, but I’m guessing he popped into your mind b/c he’s so damn big and uses it. One can overcome size with grit and determination (no one ever talks about how short Brendan Morrow is — 5’11" is he’s lucky — b/c he’s a hellion), but I think we all can agree Filatov won’t be that kind of player. But Sutter very well might be.

by Cory on Aug 20, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

I used the anaology to pretty much say what you just did…again. Sutter has better potential, but I also think Filatov may be a NHL player. Whether it’s firts line or fourth, I don’t know, but the kid has skill and heart.

As for Chara, the ape can reach both blue lines at the same taime and smack a puck in the triple digits. He’s a pretty good pick of the guy you sure don’t want to have to block a shot from or make a play against. Not like he’s a hockey God, but he’s very good and has some unique assets. Scrawny little pukes have an evil task against him. Whether it it be Sutter or Filatov, or hmmm, Alex O had a miserable time against him and he’s head and shoulders above both the other kids. Yet, Sutter or Filatov may become the player that nullifies him. Though I would bet the likes of Boychuck will be that type of player. Along with Toews, who’s got good size, but Kane doesn’t. He’s a little shit with a big bite at 5’ 10" and 163. Stamkos is another that’s probably gonna be nasty and he’s 6’1" and a buck 96 he’s thin and lanky. Sam Kappinen was a little puke and dam that man could move, got his mellon crushed here and there, too. Little dude in the nba, (yea I know, potential weak) but the tall guys rules and he was, well short and he owned the dunk contest. It’s all about the assets you have and how you use them.

I go back to the see and watch. Shit Yzerman, like him or love him, wasn’t big, didn’t scrap, but was a force to be recond with. Same with Gretz.

I’ll go out on a limb here. Niklas Kronwall about 6’ and a buck 89. I can get amens from across the league on that guys hits and he ain’t big, but he dam sure plays that way, huge.

I hope the system allows these guys to develope the skill and the ability to protect themselves. If they learn how to apply the trademark skills they have the size doesn’t mean alot. The plays and goals do.

That said, one Avery center ice death blow could end the carrer of any of them.
