Canes Fans Among The Worst? Apparently, From 1,200 Miles Away
Some guy in Minnesota has taken it upon himself to list the best and worst fans in the league. His criteria are:
"1. Attendance average for last 3 seasons, 2. Observations of fan activity during games, 3. Observations of fan activity on message boards and blogs. Each component will be graded on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being outstanding or perfect and 0 being very poor. A portion of this grade will take into account the team’s average finish during that span of time."
Based on his blurbs on each team, his fan observation is based on what he sees on TV. Way to really tackle the subject. Anyway, the Canes made his first entry, the "21-30" list, at No. 25. I guess relocating franchises doesn't get factored in if you live in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
I'll let him wrap it up, so you can all could a look at what a solid grip he has on the Canes:
"As the team’s beat writer Luke DeCock would probably say, if they win the fans will come."

I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada and I visited Raleigh on my honeymoon this past winter and attended two games. Both were well attended and the fans seem to be just as good/if not better than any other NHL team’s rink I’ve been to. All this bias by people in “hockey regions” is pure garbage. Although I think the Canes do get lumped in with Atlanta and Florida b/c of the division/geographical location, but to say their fans are among the worst is pure crap. I guess if Minnesota wouldn’t have failed the first time, they’d still have the North Stars and not the Wild. Just my two cents.

well if you do look at the stands in the first period, there really is a lot of empty lower level seats (because those season ticket holders can’t seem to ever get to a game on time).
I blame the traffic. If you check out the stands by the second period, its usually filled.

Man, if a fan in an area that’s already had one team taken away says that we suck, we might as well just give up now!

yeah, the traffic is bad in raleigh……if youre from a town with a population of 12.

Dustin- Just curious are you a Canes fan, or did you just happen to be in the region for your honeymoon. Either way, you made great points!

The traffic sucks, but the yellow pages parking lot is a two beer jog and free. As for “worst” fans, that’s like a red badge of courage to a degree. I find it an honor when the foe is intimidated. If we were nasty, it would be bad, I find almost the opposite. This venue has grouped around a team and we come from a vast….VAST, background of hockey. I have always felt a little sorrow when the Wings come to town. The house is dam near evn divided. I like a home team advantage and our guys don’t always get what they deserve and have earned. We may not have a century old history, may not have a dynasty, probably don’t even have a house that’s easy in and and out.
Hmmm…?
A ’Cane fan cares, and why?
While we and most other venues have come from the 6, we can hold our head up. We have our name on the grail and were in the fight for it once before. Call us what you will, it is the badge of a true team likes. While we may be spit on, or compared, we made the grade, we are still here and screw all who dare defame. For we take to the ice again and we have the taste and we have been there before. That is why the game is played and we play it with such vigor.
One can whine about the business and it’s evil’s and then you must swallow the virtue and purity.
There can be only one…
And if you think parking has much to do with it, you missed the deal.
I am the first to crumb on bone head moves or the lack of a move at all. The worst mistake one can make is to underestimate this team. I pray the league does. That means I get to touch her again.

Yeah, he’s choosing the stats to pad his own theory, for sure. But still worth responding to. Although, as my wise Grandma once said: never argue with a fool…people watching won’t be able to tell the difference. However, it was hard to resist.

If someone wants to choose the worst fans in the league, I suggest they start with how well said fans represent their team on the road. I don’t necessarily mean from an attendance stand point.
For example, the way the Sabres fans conducted themselves in Raleigh before their team hit the golf course in 06 was deplorable. Granted, the Canes fans do not travel in the numbers that some team’s fans do, but them again…most of us don’t end up missing the game because we were arrested either.

1) We can’t be too critical of the guy as we did our own analysis last week. However we would like to know how he determines ‘fan activity level’??? Seems like a VERY subjective thing to rate. Unless you go to a good sampling of a teams’ home games there is no way you can gauge that properly from a telecast. Did he say how much he weighted each?
2) Attendance is an objective measure and the canes did decrease last season compared to the season before. Its not nearly as bad as some other northern franchise. His other measure of blog activity seems interesting. A team like Washington had poor attendance but great blogging strength? So the fans are staying home on their computers? LOL
