Rod Brind'Amour Has Minor Knee Surgery

The Carolina Hurricanes just released information that Captain, Rod Brind'Amour underwent knee surgery earlier today at Rex Hospital here in Raleigh. The outpatient surgery was successful and Brind'Amour is expected to be able to play on opening night, October 10th. The following is from the press release.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Marty Isbell, removing torn cartilage (meniscus) from Brind’Amour’s left knee. Brind’Amour is expected to be back in action prior to the opening of the regular season.

Apparently, Brind'Amour had been having trouble with the knee but tweaked it further during the 5K "Fun Run" on Sunday. He was seen limping away from the festivities by several concerned fans.

More information later as it becomes available....

Wow, our first injury of the season!!! And our season hasn’t even started yet!!! YAY! -_-

well this is discouraging. Staal’s contract better be approved so he can take the “C” if needed.

Bright side: Still at zero man games lost.

Did he need the surgery before the 5k or was it BECAUSE of the 5k?

by marc on Sep 16, 2008 1:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

By the sound of it, it was sore beforehand and he tweaked it at the 5k.

I can tell you firsthand sitting on the home stretch of the fun run (watching my wife run) that he was hobbling down the stretch. He even skipped a few steps to avoid putting weight on the knee. I suspect he injured it during the race…maybe even there at the end. I think I might even have it on video…I’ll have to check.

It doesn’t bode well but really, cleaning out torn cartlidge isn’t a big deal in the short term. Long term, having less cartlidge in his knee will be a problem. Short term, he should be able to play soon and shouldn’t show any ill effects from the scope.

He probably would’ve needed it anyways, if a 5k run is going to cause surgery. Better before the season than during the stretch!

Marc is right. If this would have happened at the start of the regular season, we would be talking about weeks without our captain during a stretch of away games. As it stands now, he should be back, if not quite in top form for the start.

Wow. That isn’t great news. I hope Brindy will be ok and will be able to play.
