Claim This Guy!

An open note to Jim Rutherford:

Ryan Potulny has been placed on waivers by Edmonton for assignment to Springfield. He's only $645,000 this year and can play any forward position. Please claim him.

Thank you.

I admit I don’t know much about the kid.

Surely other teams could claim him ahead of Carolina. But you can’t get him if you don’t put a claim in.

Potulny was drafted by Philadelphia (so I’m sure there’s a point where JR wanted him ;)) and was just stuck behind too many people in Philly. He was dealt to Edmonton this offseason for Danny Syvret.

He’s a proven AHL scorer, and has the potential to do the same in NHL. He’s just 24 and has never had his shot. Based on what I’ve seen of him, he has more upside than Helminen or LaCouture, plus is younger. He’s RFA after this year, but if he doesn’t work out you could just let him walk.

I believe hes the one who scored on Leighton in that 5 ot 98 save game

You’re absolutely right … he was. I forgot that connection.

Who’s spot on the Canes roster would he take? We couldn’t send him to Albany, because that would mean a return to waivers.

I think he’d be an upgrade over Helminen/LaCouture/Jensen battle for the final forward spot. Plus he has more of a skill level to step up to a higher line and succeed if needed.

So…. someone refresh me on the waiver rule. Does the fact that he is on waivers mean that he DOES NOT have a two-way contract?

I’d be all for taking a risk on him. Doesn’t sound like it would be much of a risk at all from what I am reading….

will tonites game against the preds be available on the net?

by TylerA on Oct 2, 2008 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

I am by no means a contract negotiator or anything, but I think typically, If the player doesn’t have a 2 way contract, there is chance another team can pick him within this limited time period. If the contract states that the player waives ( hence the term waivers ) this waiting period he is then considered a " Two Way " contract. He can come up and down as the team sees fit. So these are usually players that are on the cusp. You may need them a couple times a year to come up and fill a roster spot ( ie Casey Borer ). Thus they useually get paid a little more.

Hope it helps.

That almost makes sense… But what about players who are on re-entry waivers?

Anyone here an attorney?
