Defense Ailing - Flyers at Canes Open Game Thread

The defense is really banged up for the Hurricanes as Dennis Seidenberg, Tim Gleason, and Frank Kaberle are all out with various injuries. The pairings will be Wallin/Corvo, Pitkanen/Babchuk, and Borer/Conboy. (Melichar was sent to Albany). Wade Brookbank will take Pat Dwyer's place on the fourth line.

I'll be making comments or answering questions between periods.

Down 1-0 for the 12th game in a row, Richards on a shortie.

The pain…..the pain

Not much to report, Brookbank dropped the gloves with Cote in a nice go. Conboy policed well. Lots of penalties and the powerplay looks as inept as ever. 4-on-3 chance went for naught.

What is happening with Leighton these past 5 games. He is out of position all of the time and Richards made him look stupid on the short hand. Really disappointing!

I would love to see Joni develop a touch of a mean streak…

It looked like he was ready to drop the gloves with someone for a second. I couldn’t see who it was for the Flyers. That would have been something.

Good third period so far.

Jeff Carter ends it in OT on a fluke shot right off a faceoff.

That goal is 100% on Leighton. Very disappointing given how strong he was early in the season. Overall I’m happy with the way the team played. They still lack that killer instinct to put it in the net but I like the slightly more conservative approach (other than Pinchers Babchuck). I’m not cringing every 30 seconds as we give up another odd-man rush in Maurice’s system.

Yes, the team needs to score than once.

Yes, Leighton made some nice stops in the middle part of the game.

But the rebound control was dreadful, the Richards goal … oof. And the game-winner?

Plain and simple, the team needs to get better goaltending.

This team needs to play like the Devils if they want to win.

Much better effort from the team as a whole, though. Looked like they were actually there for more than good seats.

Lack of Goaltending and power play are killing us.
