Montreal at Carolina - Game Preview

The Canadiens visit Raleigh for the last time this regular season as the Habs and Canes tangle at the RBC tonight. Both teams have been struggling with injuries, and both teams powerplays have been pitiful or "nonexistent", as Montreal coach Guy Carbonneau stated.

Montreal has actually dropped below Carolina and is currently ranked 29th in the league at 13%. According to NHL.com, the Canes are ranked 27th at 13.2%.

Carey Price will be sitting out this game for Montreal, as will Christopher Higgins, Saku Koivu, Mathieu Dandenault, and Mike Komisarek.

The Hurricanes injured list shortened up a bit, but Frank Kaberle, Anton Babchuk, and Niclas Wallin are still on the shelf.

Cam Ward will be facing Jaroslav Halak in net. While Ward is usually stellar against the Habs, Halak is no sloutch.

  • Ward 8-7-3 GAA 2.63 SV% .912

  • Halak 3-4-1 GAA 2.38 SV% .918

Justin Williams has also had good success in the past against the Canadiens. He has scored 6 goals and 18 assists for 24 points in 24 career games against the franchise. Perhaps he will get untracked tonight.

Streakin-

  • Whitney has points in five straight games

  • Staal has points in three straight

  • Brind'Amour has points in three straight

  • Ruutu has points in two straight

The Hurricanes have earned points in four consecutive games, (1-0-3), while the Habs have lost two in a row to the Caps and Bolts. Game time is at 7 and it will be broadcast by FS Carolinas.

Once again, congratulations to Jonathan for earning the most Canes Country Points and for winning the two tickets to see this game. He picked them up yesterday. Have fun!

Since we never know anymore which team will show up for the game, we can only hope it’s the “good” one. Go Canes!

Wow, Jonathan was singing the praises of Cam Ward so much I actually thought Cam was writing on this blog under the pseudonym ‘Jonathan.’ So Jonathan is actaully just a common folk like us? I have been out of town so I have not been able to read a lot of comments on this site, but am I the only one who thinks the ’Canes have turned things around despite only gaining a point in the last two games? Tonight is the start of a successful winning streak.

Ugh did you see the Philly game, 2 games ago?-lol

Every game I sit in my STH seat and hope this is the game where we are going to turn it around. I will have to admit I’m mentally wore out hoping again and again, but maybe this is the one…

I hate saying any game is must-win. But this one is close. Banged up opponent and a slide in the standings. Need 2.

by Cory on Dec 16, 2008 3:10 PM EST reply actions

hotchips – nope, you’re not the only one that feels that way (although it was 2 points in as many games – both went to OT, even though that flyers one felt like a loss). And yes, that third period in the flyers was a disaster, but it was such a disaster that it felt like, well, it was exceptional…
Now if we can just get rosie out of that damned press box and onto the freaking ice!

by Andrea on Dec 16, 2008 3:41 PM EST reply actions

I will be watching the game with a stopwatch in hand… how about some ice time for Rosie and Conboy??!!! As someone posted on LSB, time to "unleash ‘the Conboy’ " :) More physicality, please.

The win-loss record has not been good or dramatically improved, but I like the adjustments to the system and style… things seem more organized and responsible on the ice (and I do not think the Canes or Mo are veering into boring territory). I hope this represents building a solid foundation… at least that is what it does look like.

Bodies in front of the net during a crisply-passed powerplay, please.

Oh… and how about taking a few shots, Sammi?! You can’t score goals if you don’t shoot the puck (or get feeds from your linemates and get into position).

Nice post on Lord Stanley’s Blog about Mo wanting “inspired” hockey. Love him, hate him, or think he is full of **** and talks a good game, at least it does seem that the new coaching staff (Mo, Ro, Francis) is and has been on top of exactly what is needed. And they give specifics rather than generalizations to the media. I just want to see continued progress. It was getting painful to see the Canes stagnating with little hope of avenues for improvement. Now if the team can execute (and the strange icetime – Brindy included – is slightly adjusted)…

I noticed in the standings that Florida is ahead of us now in the SE. Frickin’ Florida? If that doesn’t get the team juiced for a win, I don’t know what will.

Interesting point in the N&O from Staal (Staal picks up the pace). He mentioned that since Laviolette is gone, the
tension is alleviated.

Could there have been more to the coach’s firing than just trying to turn things around?

I hope this is a dynamic break out for the team. Several of the guys deserve one real nice pound the shit out of the Habs game. I’m talking like a 4-0 whippin’

That would make my day!!

Hey Fred, I wouldn’t be so sure about this team getting “juiced” for anything. If they don’t even get rattled when their own guys get knocked around unfairly, or when your up by 4 and you blow a lead, I doubt they get juiced about anything.

Well, perhaps 50% off their next golf visit may get them a little hot around the collar…. :)

by Ivan on Dec 16, 2008 5:27 PM EST reply actions

At least this team doesnt need Last Min Golfer this year.

by Douchebag St John on Dec 16, 2008 5:45 PM EST reply actions

Sometimes I can’t help think that peewee putt-putt mini-golf is more befitting this group, with the way the team gets pushed around.

I used to complain about Lavi not sending anyone out to “enforce the code…” and I guess now I have to get on Mo’s case too!!!

How in Hell does Hamerlik (spelling…I know I F’d it all up) get away w/ murdering Staaaaalsy and nobody gave it back to him??? I know Gleason went after him at first… but Damn…

For the love of Bob Probert…. You gotta send someone in to kick that guys ass or else our best players are going to spend the rest of the season in the hospital!!!!

Why is our team the ONLY one in the league that will not enforce the code???

Great game otherwise… My g/f and I actually had a Habs fan sitting beside us who was NOT annoying at all… I guess I do believe in miracles… ;-) (and we went the entire day without mentioning the Miracle at Molson)

by Mateo on Dec 16, 2008 10:51 PM EST reply actions

Mateo – I was really annoyed by that lack of enforcement too, but then I thought that the best revenge would be to score on that PP, so put out the best guys for that.
That said, I thought overall the hits were pretty weak on our part. So weak that I would call them ‘leans’ rather than ‘hits’. It almost looked like a contest: how lightly can you check someone into the boards… rule number one, you have to still make contact…
So yeah, there was no response/toughness even after that PP, and there really needed to be.

by Andrea on Dec 17, 2008 12:12 AM EST reply actions

It’s like Tim Gleason was the only person who noticed… and he’s the guy who we DON’T need to be mixing it up w/ people while he is still hurt….

oh well… hopefully nobody will kill any of our guys….

Thanks again Bubba for the tickets! The seats were awesome and even better that we won!

Hotchipsnsalsa, I am a “regular folk” just like you. I noticed early on that Leighton wasnt as great as everyone was making him out to be. He is constently out of position and gives up long rebound second chances. I think that you would agree that Ward is a much better goalie then Leighton and Ward gives the Canes a much better chanes to win hockey games!
