Quick Hits - Pens Will Visit Wednesday with 5-1 Record

The Pittsburgh Penguins will invade the RBC Center for a game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night tied for the Eastern Conference lead with a record of 5-1.    The Pens are 4-0 on the road and have won three straight.  Needless to say, this match will be a huge test for the Hurricanes, who are presently 2-3.

Will the home team come out with a chip on their shoulders and with something to prove after being swept in last year's Eastern Conference Finals?

We will have ample discussion about this game right up until the puck drops.

Star-divide

____

Jussi Jokinen missed Monday's practice because of a possible cold.  (respiratory issue).  He is still expected to play Wednesday.  Joni Pitkanen also missed practice, although he skated alone beforehand.  He is still questionable with a sore knee.  We will keep an eye on the status of both of these players.

____

SB Nation had an exclusive interview with Hall of Famer Mark Messier recently to discuss the new, improved M-11 helmet he is marketing.  You can check out the interview here.  Kudos to Brandon Worley for doing a fine job with that.

Aaron Ward is trying out the new helmet and reportedly likes it so far.

____

Brian LeBlanc, from The Big Tailgate, covers the Hurricanes for Curtis Media Group's WPTF and posts his articles and other information at a section of the site called "Puck Drops".  If you listen to 96 Rock, you probably have heard of the site.

A couple of weeks ago, Brian started a hockey podcast and previously has had guests such as Tripp Tracy and Puck Daddy's own Greg Wyshynski on his show.   This week, he was nice enough to invite yours truly to give it a try, so on Monday after lunch I joined Brian and his co-host Phil and we discussed a few Hurricanes related topics, such as the slew of recent penalties, Joni Pitkaken's injury, and the Pittsburgh game coming up.

Brian and Phil are real professionals and I did my best to try to keep up with them.  While we did not officially solve any of Carolina's problems, we did have a lot of fun and hopefully we can do it again soon.  If you would like to take a listen, check the link below.

Podcast Number 4

For previous shows, you can reference this link. "Puck Drops Podcasts".

Thanks again, Brian and Phil and see you at the next game!

When I say "Beat the Pens"

I mean use a club, cudgel, hammer, mallet, maul, table, etc.

Toronto tried that, ask them how that worked out.

Love your input Bubba/Bob.

Although we don’t always agree (Staal), I always appreciate and take in your input and perspective on the team and players. You certainly have earned your place with this team and your professionalism (you’ve come a long way Baby!). Congrats!

Speaking of Staal, I know a couple of years ago your wife wasn’t his greatest fan as I, so I was wondering how she is feeling about him now? Shoot me an email if you don’t want to post here-LOL.

My thoughts for the game tomorrow night…
The Canes can shoot 2 birds with one stone, they can redeem themselves from the playoffs shutout and also send a message that this team is now ready to take on the best of the best with a vengance. We have the talent, we need to get it together and prove it now more than ever. We need this win!

Staal needs to step up and be the franchise player he is paid to be. I’m sick of hearing Tripp Tracey every 15 minutes praising him as the leader of this team and how great he is and how much he wants to show this team and fans that he is the one, not to mention him always saying that he is the reason we have won all our games “with the little things he does”-screw the little things, he needs to be a man and do the big things or decrease his minutes and put him on the 2nd line. I’m tired of seeing him pout everytime he gets hit and no Cole their to stand up for him, it’s time to stand up for himself. Enough about Staal.

I’m very concerned about Pitkanen’s knee now. We are past the “2-4 weeks out” range now. If he’s still sore then the knee scope did not achieve what they had hoped it would. I’m never been a big fan of Pitkanen, but with Sidenberg and Babchuck gone, I have become one of his biggest fan and want him back on the ice.

I am however loving Alberts and Harrison and what their bringing to this team, not to mention A. Ward.

Cam Ward has and is earning his pay. He is the best player on the ice so far. I take back my laughing about him making the Olympic team as #1 or #2, he is by far earning one of those spots with his game playing since the season started. If you remember Bubba, I use to despise Cam Ward as our #1 goalie, I’m proud to now be one of his greatest fans!

Go Canes! Lets win this one!!! Please!

C,

Thanks for the input. Staal is still not my wife’s favorite player, although she does not have the extreme distaste for him that you seem to have. :-)

Some food for thought-

Many say that Staal depends upon Cole, but when Cole went to Edmonton he had a scoring drought. When he returned to Staal’s line last year, he started averaging a point a game.

Ray Whitney had his career high in assists last season. Tuomo Ruutu had his career best year last season. Samsonov has had some spark to his numbers, after major let downs in Chicago and Montreal. Chad LaRose? another career year. Is it pure coincidence that these players had career best numbers while playing, even part of the season with Staal?

We will have to agree to disagree about him. I feel like he makes others around him better, even if he is not putting up points himself. And having the ability and willingness to do all the little things is part of what makes him a great player.

my 2 pennies :-)

peace

So… according to tweets from LGC and Chip, Staal is not practicing today. Hope it’s nothing more than precautionary (like with Jussi, who is back today).

well…. Staal hasn’t shown up for any games….. so why should he show up for practice?

Maybe Roddy told him to go to the Rec Zone…….

Podcast

Bob,

Great having you on the show! We appreciated the expertise and yep, you sounded great. And again like I said, thanks again for you and the site. Without it, my time in Charleston would have been a very dark and bleak time without your excellent Canes coverage. I spent many a night in the live game thread when my cable company chose to show me women’s college basketball instead…

Now that I’m in Raleigh it’s just easier to feed my Hurricanes addiciton!
