Tuomo Ruutu Suspended 3 Games
It's being confirmed by many sources in Twitter this morning that Carolina Hurricanes winger, Tuomo Ruutu, was suspended by the NHL for three games. Ruutu received a five minute boarding and a game misconduct after he hit Darcy Tucker into the boards from behind last night in the second period of a 5-4 loss to the Avs.
Looking at the schedule, Ruutu will miss tonight's game in Minnesota as well as the St. Louis game Wednesday night and the matinee in Philadelphia, Saturday. He will be able to play again next Sunday in Raleigh against San Jose, a game designated to honor Ray Whitney's 1,000th NHL game.
Brandon Sutter will be recalled from Albany to fill in on the roster.
More about the game tonight with the Wild a bit later in our game preview.

I’m sorry, but I think this is bull****. Ruutu is not known as a dirty player and in my opinion that hit in no way merits all of this. He is being punished for the injury and not the hit. I feel horrible for Tucker and hope he recovers quickly, but dammit it was a bang, bang play. It absolutely was a penalty, but not a major, game misconduct and 3 game suspension. Tucker turned at the last minute and Ruu didn’t pull up when he should have. That kind of hit happens all of the time, and is usually just a 2:00 minor, but by freak luck Tucker was positioned in a way that he was seriously injured. I feel terrible for him and I’m sure Tuomo does to, but to come down on him so hard is absurd.
How many games did Doug Weight get for the Sutter hit? Tucker was against the boards and Ruutu het him in the back (he should have let up), but Weight hit Sutter in the head in the open ice. Much more dangerous hit, yet no suspension…
Still not a crook!
good point on Doug Weight… He was not suspended….
I guess the difference is that the weight hit (by the rulebook) was technically “legal” …but no less wrong….

Rules of the Game
By the rules of the NHL Doug Weights hit was legal. Hitting a guy in the head with your shoulder is considered a legal play, so why would he be suspended for doing that? Ruutu’s hit was the worst hit I’ve ever seen someone throw for a team I root for and he should be suspended for it. 3 games is probably the standard these days for hitting from behind.
Well then change the damn rules. The Weight hit was much more viscious and had more intent than Ruutu’s.
Still not a crook!
This completely merits a 3 game suspension. That was an awful hit, no matter of intention. Three games is not a huge deal and he’ll be back Sunday. I look forward to when he gets back but now we get to see what Sutter can do this year. I think there are positives that can come of this.
Love, love, love the Canes!
I’m sorry, I completely disagree. Maurice nailed it, “"There were things not present in the hit that I’m glad weren’t: he didn’t leave his feet, it wasn’t an elbow, Darcy wasn’t four feet off the boards where it could have been a real catastrophic event. He was right on the boards.”
Compare that to the Orpick hit (3 games suspension as well) and the Weight hit (no suspension).
Still not a crook!
guess the difference is that the weight hit (by the rulebook) was technically "legal" …
is what I said in my statement….
The hit (to me) didn’t look as bad as hearing tuckers head bounce off the ice as he landed…
oh well… water under the bridge now… I hope Darcy Tucker recovers…..

I honestly thought the punishment would be one game and a fine…. It was without question a poor decision on the part of Ruutu… but not with ill intentions…
But three games is probably a fair ruling….
on the flip side… Darcy Tucker probably doesn’t think that three games is enough….

3 games is what Orpick got for his hit on Cole, so in the NHL’s mind the two hits were equal. Surely Ruutu’s hit can’t be compared to Orpicks…
Still not a crook!
I worry about the “NHL’s mind” sometimes….

Doesn't Change My Fan Status
As long as they call the hits the same for one of our guys if they get hit the same way as Ruutu hit Tucker then fine, I’ll miss him the three games he’s out. I think Tuomo’s one of the best guys we have on the team and he just isn’t as dirty as other teams try to make him out to be. At least maybe this will help people realize that they can’t keep pushing us around, they’ve been beating us up the past couple of games. Best wishes to Darcy Tucker for a speedy recovery, still a Ruutu fan.
Chip’s blog has been updated to include comments from the Coach:
“We’re disappointed that we’re going to lose an important player for three games,” Maurice said today. "The league has a process, they have to go through it. We respect their decision.
“And, nobody ever likes to see a player get injured. We hope the best for Darcy Tucker and hope he has a speedy recovery.”
Asked if he believed the hit warrented a suspension, Maurice said: "That’s an excellent question.
“I think the league makes its decision and we all abide by it, regardless of our opinion.
“There were things not present in the hit that I’m glad weren’t: he didn’t leave his feet, it wasn’t an elbow, Darcy wasn’t four feet off the boards where it could have been a real catastrophic event. He was right on the boards.
“It was a very, very hard hit that had an unfortunate result. But I expect Tuomo to finish that check.”
Also of note; Erik Cole has been placed on IR.
I believe Nov 1 is the earliest possible date Cole will be back, 4 weeks after Boston. Add in Whitney100 day, and we can just call that that game re-start of the season, shall we?
I put this on the other post, but when Walker didn’t get suspended after the AWard punch, it was difficult for him and the Canes to get past. By November 1, this Ruutu incident will be over and done, sentence served. Actually simplifies a lot.
Any word on Gleason for tonight?

Here’s from the Denver Post’s Adrian Dater’s blog last night
At least it’s not like Walker in Boston.
Fortunately, I’ve never witnessed a player become that seriously hurt in nearly 15 years of covering the NHL, but you know it can always happen. It’s a scary game sometimes. Those guys are moving so fast out there. I’m sure all serious hockey fans have seen a game from fairly up close before, but if you haven’t, you have no idea until you do just how incredibly fast those guys are going and just how split-second everything is.
That’s why, as bad as Ruutu’s hit seemed tonight – and guaranteed he’ll get a suspension for it, probably at minimum 3-5 games – I’m not sure it rose to "totally dirty" level. Ruutu was trying to finish a check. Granted, to a guy with his back turned, but things happen fast out there. I don’t think any player goes into a game thinking, ‘Hey, I want to get my butt suspended tonight with a real dirty hit. I want my reputation sullied, my paycheck withheld and my team at a disadvantage because of it too."
It was a hard hit, a suspension-worthy hit probably, but I don’t think it’s something that we should all totally villify him for. It happened fast. Tucker’s head hit the glass in an unfortunate way and he got hurt. Let’s hope it turns out OK.

Thanks Mateo
I’m guessing that was you on PuckDaddy pointing out the difference between the 2 Ruutu’s? Thanks for that. I think that’s where a lot of the venom and judgment is coming from – starting with Foote (as you said).
I’m not sure why Wysh is making it the focus for his last 3 stories though. Slow news day in the NHL?

I wonder if the coaches wouldn’t start Sutter out with Conboy and TKO (a little more protection) and then shuffle things as needed throughout the game.
That is probably what needs to happen…. Sutter is (IMO) still very very small for his “size.”
(that was the Yogi Berra statement of the day)

My take on Ruutu
I’m taking away a few things from this:
1. To everyone, but Canes’ fans (and even then, not all of us), I think Ruutu’s image and reputation have taken a serious hit. His brother’s antics aren’t helping him any either. People will be gunning for him from now on and he’ll be under a microscope until something worse happens.
2. I don’t think this is in any way, shape or form as “dirty” as the Cole hit. The equal suspensions for the two incidents stem from Orpik not getting enough time IMO, not Ruutu getting too much.
3. Dirty or not, Ruutu had to be suspended for multiple games. If positions were reversed, we’d all be shouting for Tucker to be suspended as well. Hopefully, he’ll learn from it and be more careful in the future. On the flip side of that coin, you wonder if his game will suffer because of a new found timidness.
Despite my personal feelings about Tucker, I hope he recovers quickly and fully.
Bottom line, the team cannot let this distract them from fixing the other things that went wrong last night (Staal coming off his discipline at the end being one of them). They have to pull themselves together and some wins put together.
Wish I had a citation for this, but I’ve read more than one interview with Ruutu (some translated from Finnish) in which he has discussed his tendency to go to either a physical extreme or a skill (scoring) extreme with his game. His self-analysis speaks to balancing those two out within a game.
So, if he needs to mind his P’s and Q’s for a while physically, we could benefit from a scoring uptick.
I’m personally not too worried about him backing off on the hits, however. Too much apparent joy of the game in him to suppress a good hit whenever it’s available.
I hope you’re right on all accounts. Part of his game is physicality and our team would suffer if he was hesitant to bring that for whatever reason. I wasn’t worried so much about him not wanting to hit, but more about him being hesitant to do so because he’s afraid of getting called for a penalty which I suspect may happen more frequently now that he’s on the refs’ watchlist.
ice_chip says Cam Ward is starting tonight. No practice/skate today.

If they start hanging out by the bubbler (closest thing to a hot tub in a fish tank) together, let us know.
Okay. So as always happens, we came home with more than we intended to buy when we left the house. A Sign of Desperation? You betcha!
Here’s the deal
We got Cullyfish and Roseyfish:

a pair of Harlequin Rasbora. Pretty quick, small, darting around frenetically. Seem to hang more with the D and the Refs (all Zebra Danios) at this point. Still waiting for them to connect with other forwards Whitney, Jussi and Ruuts. Staal and Cole are hanging to the bottom gravel, looking strong (no lower body injuries – hm?) and not really interested in any new arrivals.
Next, we took a huge gamble ($9.99!) and got us a Cam Ward III:

plus a small live bamboo shoot for him to tend. He won’t let go. Isn’t he gorgeous?
Last we got some “pH neutralizer”. Having gotten the nitirites and ammonia under control, we found the tank was still too aciditic. We’ve added some neutralizer a little while ago and hopefully the chemistry will be perfect by the time Tuomo comes back from his suspension and Cole is healthy.
Surely this will do it! I’m out of ideas after this.

Your fishtank may actually be sanctioned by the hockey gods:
-The Eric(k)s hang out together.
-Cam fish has a pole to tend.
-Rosey and Cullen stay together with the refs-maybe lobbying for a chance to get a shorty?
I hope you’re right. The lady at Petco said to watch out because the shrimp (Cam) might go after the Catfish (Eric/k) and to watch for nips in their fins. That’s an interesting dynamic I hadn’t considered between our 2 franchise players…
Since the first image I posted was apparently not legal?, here, once again, are the very attractive Cully and Rosey

Well Cam and Eric are road roomies-maybe there is some fighting over who controls the TV remote?
And Matty and Rosey are pretty. I like the black and red-ish colors in the tails-very appropriate.
All our forward- fish have some red or black on them. The D-fish are golden – red.

Maybe you should put the Ruutu fish into a separate pool while he is suspended :)
Do you actually have Tuomo fish? What sort of fish is he?
You know we do have a 10-gallon tank, but It’s dry and empty. It would be difficult to get the chemistry right quickly (plus there’s temperature, aeiration, filtration).
My 12-yr old just suggested we find a little box or porous plastic bag to segregate Ruuts (but still part of the tank) for the week.
To answer MHodak: Ruutu and Jussi are Scissortail Barbs. We selected them because they had such distinctive “finns”. When it comes to fish as hockey players, it’s often hard to come up with really solid reasoning. I’ll see if I can find an image.

Jim Rutherford has been one of the most outspoken opponents to hits to the head and hits from behind. There’s no doubt in my mind that part of this three game suspension is a message to JR that the old boys don’t want to change.
That said, Ruutu had every opportunity to hold up and not hit Tucker in the back. Yes Tucker looked like he was going to turn away from the boards and yeah Tucker probably deserved something like this in a kharmic sort of way, but it is still no excuse. There’s a stop sign back there on young kids jersey’s for a reason. Truthfully, I think the only reason that Ruutu wasn’t suspended five games was because he’s never done anything like this before.
5 seconds left.
Do you believe in miracles?
YES!!
Tucker's status
This from Darren Draegar (source unknown) on his Twitter account:
DarrenDreger Tucker…40 stitches after hitting head on ice. He is concussed. likely out at least 10 days.
Interesting it’s from hitting the ice, not the boards. Still, it was a bad (though not dirty) hit. Hopefully it will be healed soon and forgotten quickly.

Two things.
First, I read that Tucker has been released from the hospital but obviously out indefinitely until he gets over the concussion issues.
Second, and it’s a n00b question, but I’m not that familiar with suspensions. What happens with Tuomo over the next week? It was mentioned during the broadcast that he’s “off the ice” while he serves his suspension. Does that mean he’s allowed to practice with the team or is he held out of practice and skates separate from the team? Just curious.
Tripp did say that he skated today even though the team didn’t practice, so it’s encouraging that he’s being diligent while he’s out and hopefully says a little about where his head is right now.
One game down, two to go.
