Canes Put Stephane Yelle on Waivers

The Carolina Hurricanes placed Stephane Yelle on waivers this morning according to team sources.  Yelle was signed as a free agent over the offseason and was counted on to center the team's fourth line.  So far he has registered just a single assist this season and leads the team in minor penalties, for time spent on the ice.

The move is a good sign for youngster Brandon Sutter, who had an excellent training camp but was assigned to Albany because the team did not have room for him.  We will have to see if another team claims Yelle off the wire and what happens from here.  The ex-Bruin has a salary of $550,000.

Is this a wake up call to the rest of the team?

Hardly! But if I can contribute anything to help the greater good of the Caniac Nation, then I’m honored by the suggestion – however unlikely!

This is very good news. JR’s famous patience must be learning that you can’t wait too long. Welcome to Raleigh, Brandon Sutter.

Now I’m just waiting for caniacgirl to chime in with her reaction….

I think JR frequents this blog more often than we think. Full credit goes to HM.

It’s nice to see they aren’t being complacent and hoping things work out. They are making adjustments to ensure things work out. That’s all I can ask for I guess.

And on a completely selfish note, this means a certain River Rat may be in Raleigh for my next game. :)

My guess is they’ll assign him to Albany … and he may just retire (best case scenario financially).

Would they buy him out? Or just leave him in Albany?

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Can’t do buyouts now I don’t think. There is a limited window during the offseason to do those.

I thought waivers were just that. Waiving the opportunity to keep a player under contract at the nhl level, 2 ways being diff. Maybe it’s re-entry waivers..

by Paladin6 on Oct 26, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I think I understand you, but am not 100% sure... :)

Waivers gives us a chance to unload Yelle’s contract 100%, if someone picks him up. If they don’t (and he is assigned to Albany), we’re still responsible for his contract.

Is that what you were saying?

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, sounded alot better when you said it. He can also be clled back up, but has to clear re-entry waivers and then he can be picked up by another team, then also.

In all honesty, wait for Cory, he’s way better at this than I.

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 26, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, waiving a player means all 29 other teams will have a chance to claim him and take on his full salary. If no one claims him, we have the option to assign him to Albany if we want, but continue to pay his full salary. If he is assigned to Albany, he then would have to clear re-entry waivers to return to Carolina. If a team claims him on re-entry waivers, they only have to pay half his salary, and we pick up the other half.

by DaleCooper on Oct 26, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s the part I was still fuzzy on-what happens if he’s picked up on re-entry waivers. So thanks!

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

That is exactly right…. if he had a two-way he could be sent down without waivers… and he would be paid a lower rate at the AHL Level… But it would be EXTREMELY uncommon for a player like Yelle to sign a two-way deal…

most Veterans don’t do that….

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Oct 26, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if he had a two way deal, he would still have to go through waivers due to his age.

by DaleCooper on Oct 26, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

got ya… wasn’t sure what the rules were involving a players age or years in the league etc….

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Oct 26, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

You know … I dunno what i was thinking. I think the window is closed. I got so into figuring the math out … lol. Best they can hope for is someone claims him now or on re-entry.

by Cory Lavalette on Oct 26, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

if he makes it back to carolina after re-entry, isnt it at a reduced price?

by chrisj on Oct 26, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

half … Canes and the claiming team would be on the hook for half each.

by Cory Lavalette on Oct 26, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Here’s from Branecky this morning – during practice no less

I liked this astute observation:

While it’s difficult to make much of an impression in that amount of time, minor penalties have not helped his cause. He took a hooking minor in the second period of the Minnesota game, after which he only played one shift. That infraction gave him 10 penalty minutes in the team’s 10 games.

by Paladin6 on Oct 26, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

2/3rds of his contract over the twice the length of the deal (minus the 1/8th-ish he’s earned in 10 games). Ballpark of $322,000 over two years ($161,000ish). If my math and understanding is correct.

I understood that A Ward was the one who planted the idea to sign Yelle in JR’s head. And Yelle was offered a contract based on AWard’s recommendation knowing him from Boston.

This happening so late in the summer, Yelle probably would have signed anything.

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 26, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

well… I really do feel bad for Yelle… he seems like a good person…. Maybe his time has just come and gone… who knows.

But from our point of view… this could be the start of good things. I do not believe that Stephen Yelle was the center of our problems… our team certainly has issues far beyond what our 4th line center could account for… But at least JR is showing willingness to make changes… and hopefully send a message….

And from another angle… he may be trying to take Yelle’s sallary off the books in order to free up some cash and bring in an impact player via trade….

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Oct 26, 2009 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

i agree, yelle wasnt the problem but no one person was and something had to be done

by chrisj on Oct 26, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Mateos, your idea about bringing in an impact player via trade might be correct. After I heard word about his, I began thinking the same thought. Could we be on the verge of a team shake-up through a trade? Maybe, were gonna be gettin that winger we desperately need foe Staal.. one can hope.

First Rod and now Brandon. I guess Mo doesn't like to pigeon-hole anyone.

And maybe it’s a good thing I didn’t have any video for the game Saturday.

It didn’t help that he was using another player’s sticks since his didn’t arrive in time, or that he received a high stick to the face on his very first shift, leaving him with a clear diagonal mark underneath his left eye.
"Welcome back," said Sutter. "It woke me up a little bit, so it was probably good for me."

I would not have been pleased. LOL

I have no idea what brough Dwyer into the picture.

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably the fact that the Canes are still without Ruutu for two more games, and Cole for ? more games.

LOL I guess I was asking for that.

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh wait hang on...

If Yelle gets picked up, that would leave a hole in the 4th line. Maybe Rod or Jussi would fill in that spot and there would be a wing spot open (even if Sutter played wing). That’s where Dwyer would come in I guess.

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly – Sutter is replacing Ruutu, Dwyer is replacing Yelle. Conboy is replacing Gleason, maybe (according to the lines today). Plenty of room for everyone.

Except Yelle and Harrison perhaps.

Let's go Canes!

by Carolyn Christians on Oct 26, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

With everyone playing different positions (Rod and Sutter as wings for example), everything is like one giant word scramble at this point. The depth chart isn’t really much help since it still has Yelle as the 4th line center.

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

its good for us when we get kicked out of the faceoff.
i mean on top of brindy and sutter and jokinen, larose and rutuu were both centers at one point in their careers too.

by chrisj on Oct 26, 2009 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes … but you have to remember they still have their center in circle. Maybe the Canes benefit if both guys get thrown out.

by Cory Lavalette on Oct 26, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I beg to differ. Sutter is not, NOT “replacing” Ruutu. I would think more along the lines of replacing Yelle. He was called up due to Ruu’s boo boo, but the donuts got shuffled up, Sutter can’t do Ruu’s job. I do think he’s earned a spot on the team (again).

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 26, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re right. I was very careless with my wording. My bad. I meant just by roster spots available (ie when Ruutu was suspended that made room for Sutter) – not in terms of their roles or abilities for the team.

Ruutu is irreplaceable.

This makes me sad

As most of you know I’m a huge Avs fans, and Yelle was a lynchpin of the PK unit for both the 01 and 96 cup teams. He was a great third line shut-down hockey player, and the avs haven’t been able to replace his absence since they stupidly traded him to Calgary years ago.

I have the sweater for 2 players, Sakic and Yelle. I realize he’s a lot older now and has lost a step, which is probably causing him to take penalties, but In my eyes he’ll always be the center the Avs threw out to stop Federov, Shanahan, and Yzerman.

I’m officially bummed. (of course I can cheer up by looking at how the avs are playing now, but still. I always liked Yelle a lot.)

Jibblescribbits: C'mon over and waste some time

by Jibblescribbits on Oct 26, 2009 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

Well I think the Yelle waiving is a twofold necessity. Sutter is ready, and another year in the A can;t give him up what more time in the bigs will, IMO. The other side is, a message had to be sent, and I think this is the most logical path to send that message. He was, unfortunately, the player with easiest skill set to replace. Except maybe Conboy, but really waiving him carries little weight, where a veteran “Name Player” sends the point home deeper.

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Sutter is most definitely ready

I’m shocked at the development in his game. Even since the pre-season he’s made a jump. He’s had great hockey sense, but it looks like he’s honed his skills to such a point that they match his mind.

5 seconds left.

Agreed … he looked explosive … more than he ever has.

I only caught the tail end of that game… but I hear that Sutter looked really really good….

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Oct 26, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

One thing I noticed was the number of times I saw him parked in front of the opposing tenders crease. I thought that was a great sign.

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

So where the F*** were all you 4-12 weeks ago?

I do believe I may have mentioned this FACT a time or two.

Hey I have always been high on Sutter. I think this is the right move at the right time.

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Not so much directed at you, but at the chorus group of new members to the brotherhood of Sutter.

I caught shit from dam near the whole board saying Sutter’s time is now and screw AHL exper. Yelle was a mistake ad nauseum.

While I am glad for the converts, my Zantac and frustration level with you, my fellow hockey fans was going through the roof.

And remember he’s a kid rookie, he’s gonna make some bone head plays, but he didn’t have his own sticks, was only given some few hours notice and he played like a pro.

I’m for a first goal/point out of him Wed. night this time around. He’s got his own lumber back and a game under his belt and is now in the mix. He’s living his dream.

Let’s see how much rubs off.

Got a ton of other issues to deal with. This should ease up on Staals ice time during penalty’s, too.

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 26, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

As long as he wasn’t going to be forced into 2 minutes a night on the 4th line, I was good with him staying. Thankfully, it doesn’t sound like he will be (although I’m not sure how I feel about him playing on the wing).

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

why the concern about playing him on the wing?

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

No real reason in particular. It’s just that this way, he doesn’t get the chance to hone skills that are specific to his natural position (and likely the one he’ll be playing for us in the future). There may be a big effect, a small one or none at all. :shrugs:

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually it could be the opposite effect. Remember that Staal played on Ronnie’s wing for a little while, it could be a learning opportunity all it’s own. Plus, I think it is a move that could get him more TOI which is bigger that anything he can learn by staying at Center and playing limited minutes.

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

But didn’t Ronnie eventually move to wing because Staal couldn’t cut it there? I definitely could be wrong…that was a touch before my time as a Canes’ fan.

But essentially you and I agree-the more TOI, the better.

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Before your time, huh. Well if you think things are bad now, you should have been with us during “Season from Hell”

They moved him back over, but I don’t know that it was a c"an’t cut it" kinda thing. The more versatile a player like Sutter, who will never be an offensive dynamo, can be, the better.

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

or a Detroit fan from the 70’s and 80’s…

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 26, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Luckily (or unluckily depending on your point of view) I was safely ensconced in Houston, TX during that time. But I’ve heard the horror stories. :)

And putting it that way (versatility and what not) makes sense. Like I said, I didn’t really have strong feelings one way or the other. It was more of a uncertainty kind of thing.

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I think every second he’s on the ice in an NHL game is nothing but good for him. Any spot, any line. Find where his strength is. I gotta tell ya he played half of his 12 minutes on D. He was one of the standouts at covering the pinching guy. He was almost perfect at falling back and covering. I would of missed it except I’ve been watching this kid for awhile.

If you have it dvr’d go back and just watch him. His head is always moving, he resists urges to take cgances and his position was excellnt all night.

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 26, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t have it dvr’d (no cable coverage down here in South Cackalacky), but I’ve seen enough of his game to know that you’re right.

And yes, the more time he gets the better. You’ll find no argument from me on that one.

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Wouldn’t of happened that way, the kid is ready and he is gonna play.

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 26, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it would have happened that way, at least at the start of the season. Especially since Yelle was already signed before Sutter’s impressive camp.

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Well we can disagree. I just think you can’t stop this kid. It’s like Rosie to some extent. Rosie didn’t have the talent and skill to just bound into a roster spot he played his ever lovin’ ass off like it was his last game for a few years and you cannot deny that type of effort.

In Sutters case he’s got the skill, too. I’n three games he’d been up from a couple minutes to pulling third line minutes and PK time.

My .02

I’n three games he’d been up from a couple minutes to pulling third line minutes and PK time.

We basically just said the exact same thing. :)

IMO, something similar to the current situation probably would have been what happened. Sutter would have outplayed people for a few games and then would have been rewarded with more TOI.

Now if the whole team had been clicking from the start and had a Penguin-esque record right now, that’s a horse of a different color.

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I used to love when Yeller played for Cgy… It’s unfortunate, and kinda makes me sad too ’cause I always liked the guy… but so far for us he has been a little bit more of a liability than asset…

by Andrea's evil twin on Oct 26, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

As in many cases, Yelle is probably just the fall guy for the team not getting the job done. Ten games is too soon to make a judgement on anyone’s playing ability, but the Canes needed to do something and Sutter is ready to play. and as someone else mentioned, the penalties were not helping his case.

GM of CanesCountry.com

by Bob Wage on Oct 26, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah…. I really kind of feel bad for Stephane Yelle in all this…. you can’t really blame him for the teams troubles… it’s just that he seems like the easiest guy to cut loose at this point in the season…

And maybe keeping Sutter up on a more regular basis will provide a little extra motivation for the rest of the team…. provided he doesn’t get killed by someone who outweighs him by 100 pounds…

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Oct 26, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldnt be surprised if Yelle had a say in this, he just didnt seem like he wanted to be on the ice for whatever reason, just going through the motions.

You and I will never agree on Cole…….. I have said and remain to say the key to a potent Offense is time and space ( true in any sport except baseball, which I am not convinced is a sport) Cole is expert at creating both of these things, even when he is not on the score sheet. I know Cole and Staal are the whipping boys around here, but I gotta express my dissent.

The Hockey News

Just to pour gasoline on the fire, latest power rankings are out from The Hockey News.

We’re down from #25 last week to #28 with this comment made:

They went far in last year’s playoffs, so they take the next couple years off, right?

I expect a heavy bias from Hockey News, who seemingly have never had any love for us…but, still.

by Elsker on Oct 26, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

we haven’t seen a win in 6 games, and only 2 all year long. Until things turn around you are gonna have to get thick skinned about these kind of things.

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats the same thing I said last week. I don’t see the Canes getting to the playoffs this year but it’s never to soon to start building a new team.

by canescup on Oct 26, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

don;tw rite the season off just yet, but at the same time I wouldn’t start saving fro playoff tickets just yet either.

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Mo goes?????

Mo is lucky the Canes are still paying for Peters salary. As soon as Peter gets a new coaching job (and that will be this year at some point) I feel Mo should start getting worried. I know this is early to say but I don’t see just Sutter making our team turn around. This is however a step in the right direction, JR now needs to find room for Bowman and Boychuk and there you have a WOW fourth line.

by canescup on Oct 26, 2009 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

disagree iwth the last part

Bowman and Boychuck are not what you want in 4th line. 4th line should be crash bang seek and destroy. Boychuck and Bowman don’t fit that mold at all.

Having said that, Mo could be let go tomorrow and I would not she a tear. But you are right as long as Pete is still on the books that aint happening.

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I would pick offense right now over D. With Joni back and hopefully Timmy I’m not worried about D but we do need bigtime goals.

by canescup on Oct 26, 2009 3:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

O I agree the offense is missing, but I think you are better off creating offense with your top 9, and sending your 4th after goals for and against, successful kills, and shifts where you have sustained pressure in the offensive zone. They should be wreaking havok on the oppositions game and providing a spark for the rest of the squad. Bowman and Boychuck are going to get serious TOI in Albany, and when they come up as a tandem will be sick on a line in the NHL, just not yet. My opinions only of course.

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Here is the answer to our offense problems...........

Maybe they are trying to dump salary for a big trade???

If you’re gonna dream, dream big.

by wylde4canes on Oct 26, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, I’m not a big fan of his but our team could use someone like him 60+ goals a year (and he’s pretty consistant).

by canescup on Oct 26, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I was holding out hope for Yelle, but I think Sutter is ready. I loved what I saw out of him in the Wild game, and can’t wait to see him here full time. The kid definitely has some skill.

And was it me or did he look a little bigger out there? He seemed to muscle a few people off the puck too.

First day at a new job where I can’t get on here and look what happens!

So who centers the 4th line now? I’m a big fan of Sutter’s, but he needs to be playing top 9 minutes either here or in Albany. Putting him with Conboy and TKO would be such a waste…

Still not a crook!

Maybe you did discover the secret…

by caniacgirl on Oct 26, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

You say this in jest, I think there may be a method to the seemingly madness.

Like Mo or not, I truly believe he knows more about hockey and being a coach than any of us.

I just hope it’s enough….

He took a shit squad to the big dance and lost to the Wings. In my book, that was epic and the tinder or taste if you will, of what could be.

I think the dude is a soft science guy and knows the game.

Good, let’s get BS out of the way and start pounding rubber biscuits and causing fear and pain.

He may be the right guy, with the right roster at the right time. I don’t mean for the Cup, though that is the only goal. I mean maybe he can make this team consistant, respected and feared.

Detroit sucks almost as bad as we do. Bet your life that every team that plays us or them holds them in higher regard. I ain’t saying we are equal or anything else. All I am saying is when these guys believe they cfan compete, we will see a whole ’nuther team. I also believe the chaff is being seperated and the cream is rising.

It’s a process, i was pissed a couple months ago, now I’m kinda diggin’ it.

Everything still is smokey, this sucks…
