Erik Cole to Miss 4-6 Weeks
Chip Alexander is reporting on Canes Now that Erik Cole has a broken bone in his leg and will miss four to six weeks. Cole collided with Dennis Wideman late in last night's debacle and needed to be helped from the ice. Tim Conboy will fill in the open roster spot for now. Expect Scott Walker to move up a line while other players will be shuffled around.
We will have more about this on Monday.

Yes…. I’ll take a broken bone over a torn tendon any day!

That was my first thought. Hopefully, he’ll recover quickly.
And here is my bright spot of the day: does anyone else find this is eerily similar to 05-06? Cole out for a long period of time; an Olympic year…just saying. Keep the faith everyone.
SInce it apparently took them 24 hours to figure out it was broken, I’m thinking it’s more a hairline fracture than a big “break”. What do you foks with medical background think?
Here’s is what ice_Chip wrote around noon -
Maurice said tests to be run on Cole later today. It is a knee injury. If Cole can’t play Tuesday, Conboy goes in lineup, Maurice said.
How did it go from knee to broken leg?
Let's go Canes!

Fractured, not broken
The official Canes Twitter account said this just moments after Chip’s tweet:
“Erik Cole will miss 4-6 weeks due to a fracture in his lower left leg, suffered in a collision with Boston’s Dennis Wideman Saturday night.”
I’m thinking that their words are perhaps more carefully chosen and that it’s a fractured bone, not a broken one.
Good pick-up, Elsker. If it’s ONLY 4 – 6 weeks than it’s not a terrible break.

Sucks, but yeah—could have been a lot worse. From what it looked like in that super slo-mo replay, 4-6 isn’t so bad. Get well soon!
speaking of that super slo-mo replay… who had the wonderful idea to show his leg bend the wrong way multiple times and freeze the frame when it happened??
was I the only one that turned away at that sight?
If it bleads
it leads

Think Positive
things could be much worse—-(torn ligaments etc) Remember Rosie broke his leg a couple of years ago and came roaring back !
GO CANES! Go Heels!
i’ve heard lots of people say it was a clean hit. Was I the only one that thought wideman lead with his leg and not his hip or shoulder? He wasn’t in position to throw a hip check and his leg was stretched out toward Cole. Not that it matters at this point.
Fracture is the medical term for 'broken', they mean exactly the same thing.
It depends on which bone he fractured. You have 2 bones in your leg, the tibia and the fibula. The tibia is the big bone and is your weight bearing bone, much more serious injury and takes longer to heal and you have a plaster or fiberglass cast . The fibula is your small bone and you can actually wear a removable leg splint and bear weight on the leg if you fracture it. It generally takes 4-6 weeks to heal in an adult vs 6-8 weeks for a tibia fracture. Hopefully it was his fibula. Someone posted they saw him walking in at practice today, if thats fact then I’m guessing it was his fibula bone he fractured, or a hairline of the tibia. The good news like you all said, thank the Hockey Gods it wasn’t his ACL. Conboy is a 5 minute, send in enforcer, I don’t understand how he will fill in for Cole. I would rather see Sutter in or hopefully Rosie’s playing minutes increased.
Well lets see which team goes after Rutuu next to take out. It’s just a matter of time.

They would say “broken leg” if it was a clean break through, I’m thinking. As someone who broke his left tibia and fibula, i can attest that it’s not an eight-week recovery (tho I didn’t have the benefits of surgery). I’m guessing there’s just a partial break or crack.

Conboy won’t fill in for Cole. They will move everyone on Coles side up one line. (Probably put Rutuu up with Staal) And Conboy will fill in on the fourth line. Rosie will likely get moved up and get more playing time. Mo knows he will give it his all wherever he is put.
Agree with you about the hairline fracture. I have had hairline fractures in the shoulder area—-they were letting me do PT in the fifth week, so 4-6 weeks is not unreasonable.
Like you also said, it wasn’t the ACL, so, all things considered, things are better than they could have been.
As to who will take out Rutuu————-we play Pitt in 10 days———-they took out both of them in one game in the playoffs and no one can convince me that was not on purpose !
Boy, do I sound like a cynic ?
GO CANES! Go Heels!
Staal lead by example. He will be a great Captain one day .
We will also look better when Pits comes back. First two games lots of defensive pressure on Gleason and Corvo——and weakness on PP. All of that should improve when Joni is back. They will get it together !! No doubts in my mind. The season is young !!
GO CANES! Go Heels!
You guys and gals are funny — two games into the season and the majority of the comments relate to chicken little and the curse of the sky falling. Either that or Paladin has planted his seed successfully so that it is branching into everyone’s head. There is enough talent on this team to get going and if the resutls stay like the first two games 10, 15, 20 games into the season then these comments are warrented. I think things will change when Joni returns. And wIth an 82 game schedule do they really need to win every game? As long as they improve with each outing and make the playoff it doesn’t really matter to me if they make the 1st or 8th seed because everyting starts over in the playoffs.
Another voice of reason.
Like I said, this is only 4.762% of the season.
I asked once before:
Why so serious?
A conservative is someone who wants to get rid of all illegal immigrants,

Yea but the sky was falling and so may be this season and 4.762% of the season already gone is kinda a scary #. It’s not so much two games they lost it’s the way they lost them( or at least the Boston game).
