Panthers at Canes - Live Game Thread

Florida Panthers at Carolina Hurricanes, Oct 9, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

The starting goalies:

GP MIN W L T EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
2009 - Cam Ward 3 153 1 2 7 2.75 85 78 .918 0

GP MIN W L T EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
2009 - Tomas Vokoun 2 125 1 1 7 3.36 88 81 .920 0

Ward's stats improved tremendously after the last game.  Vokoun is always tough and has faced 88 shots already in just two games.

The Panthers just signed Dominic Moore, but as of this morning he had yet to report.  He could always be a last minute addition, but if he's en route hopefully he does not get a police escort from the airport like one lucky Finn did.

Will diving be called this game?   The referees are Chris Rooney and Stephane Auger.

I don’t know those names. Is there any history to be concerned about?

Hey, chick!! Hope they can at least be consistant if not accurate!!

Quick search of a fan board with knowledgeable opinions on officials yields general satisfaction with Chris Rooney (who is characterized as “one of the new guys”) and general disdain for Stephane Auger.

Among Auger’s apparently alleged sins are a propensity for calling the ticky-tack foul while seemingly ignoring a few blatant ones.

We’ll see.

by Elsker on Oct 9, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

In fairness, I also found a couple of opinions regarding Auger that would best be summarized by the use of “semi-competent” in one of them.

good to know

With my son’s baseball game, I’m outta here at 7:15 then I’ll get the game via DVR later. Go Canes! Keep the faith, Caniacs!

Yeah, we need a win badly. Here’s hoping Cam can get a shut-out en route to a strong season. After that long contract extension I’m hoping Vezina’s are on the horizon.

by canescup on Oct 9, 2009 7:33 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I attended games in 2000 when elskling and I were the only two people in our section.

Attendance has improved. 16K+ at the Tampa game on a Tuesday was very encouraging.

On the other hand, people appear to be busy on a Friday night…or so my invitees seemed to be.

So Staal ain’t got any numbers, but is playing strong, seems to be spring Ruutu.

GM of CanesCountry.com

by Bob Wage on Oct 9, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

No, my point exactly. Staals been working hard, but Ruutu looks like he has a little too much room. I think it’s Staal drawing bodies freeing him up.

little to close at the end of the period…all and all (MINUS WHEN WE ARE ON THE PP), best period of the year…..

by PittsburghCaniac on Oct 9, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

NICE period. More of that please.

Except maybe better work on the PP.

by pancanbra on Oct 9, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

Well there is a consensus or however the hell you spell it.

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 9, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

Hey kids, keep on rubbing them rabbits feet. The Canes are looking good 5-5, pretty dam good down a guy (a little too often on that), but our PP sucks and Booth the dragon slayer has not reared his head. I think if Booth scores the pussy cats may find a pulse. If Staal scores, this gets ugly, like a 6-0 or 7-1 crushing.

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 9, 2009 7:50 PM EDT reply actions

Three goals, four total points.

Now that’s efficiency.

1-1 in the second right now.

Justin Peters has this game. Not sure who had the first, but it was probably him, also.

I think it’s his to lose.

Cam Ward has his A game tonight

Man, Conboy just crushed Suckmycuff something or other…

Nice he showed up!! The team looks like they finaly showed up.

Makes one wonder what would be if the pre-season were a tad bit longer….

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 9, 2009 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

Preseason is part of it, but we went up against a much improved defensive team with Philly in the first one, (with our offense still waking up and our pp not off its feet) and then we went up to Boston the very next night and played a team that still hated us from last season. They just wanted it more. That’s why we went 0-2. It’s no surprise to see us doing better against the Lightning and the Panthers.

by pancanbra on Oct 9, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Ballard stood Staal up, but man, Booth ain’t done squat. Looks like our depth will prevail.

Good game, but we have to do better against teams that are well…….not these guys..

by PittsburghCaniac on Oct 9, 2009 8:46 PM EDT reply actions

I goota say there are glimmers of a sweet team here, good work, hard effort, pickingh shit up…

but it’s against the Panthers?

Man I hope this is the catalyst. All the guys have some effort. Too many have been squelched though. Staal, nothing to sperak of except great effort, Cullen had the same and is now hushed, Sami is doing well, Ruu, is doing well, hell it’s a great mix and match up.

 It’s against a loser team though…..

When these guys…or whomever “they” assemble plays this well or better against the real players, then we got soemthing…

But t his is a good start. Killing a team Booth is on is a good place to begin a run!!!!

A

by Paladin6 on Oct 9, 2009 8:48 PM EDT reply actions

Was an apparent game stoppage or clock stoppage due to a horn….anyone have the skinny on that?

Was my brother in law, just wondering what the take was..

Whoa – seven different players score – that’s insane depth. I hope it continues!

by yeaus on Oct 9, 2009 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe – but I’m gonna go with depth. When we win by five, I’m gonna take the opportunity to be positive!

What a great game!

Love that game. So many positives. Just a lot of fun to watch. Florida just wasn’t near the competition of the first 3 games. The guys really skated and seemed in sync.

Love, love, love the Canes!

Excellent Game!!!

What a way to start the weekend. 7 different players scored and Staal wasn’t one of them. I hate it that Erick didn’t score, but the bigger issue here is that the Canes had 7 guys put one on the board, which is a huge statement to our club. That statement is DEPTH. Every team needs depth, you can’t just depend on two or three guys to win all your games for you. Tonight was a very positive and uplifting game for the Canes.

Just got back from the game; haven’t read this whole thread so forgive me if there is some redundancy. A really sparse crowd kind of surprised (and disappointed) me, but I would like to think that I cheered enough to make up for it. :) The score makes it a little lopsided, but I really was impressed with the new additions who I hadn’t seen in person until now. Alberts may be the biggest person I have ever seen. Wallin had a monster night (and could have been a star of the game IMO)-that play to clear the puck at the front of the net in the third period was amazing. I also watched Rod very closely and was really impressed. Obviously him putting up two points was big, but I thought he had a really strong game all around. There was one turnover that I saw, but he hustled back (he’s skating really well) to take care of things. Cullen had a great game too-he’s taking the contract year thing seriously. The big thing I saw was that they took advantage of the chances they had. Ruutu, TKO, Whitney, Jokinen all had very clear scoring opportunities and they capitalized on them. The same thing couldn’t have been said about the team after the previous game. Very happy I made it up here!
