Turn the Page: Sharks at Canes Game Preview - UPDATE

One of the worst October's in the history of the franchise is over, it's time for the Carolina Hurricanes to start anew.  They now find themselves in last place in the Southeast Division, 14th place in the Eastern Conference, and 29th place in the league.  Only the Toronto Maple Leafs have fewer points.

The Canes will try to right the ship today against one of the best teams in the league, the San Jose Sharks.

Star-divide

The Sharks enter today's contest with the second best record in the West, 9-4-1.  They have won four games in a row and are led by superstars Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley, and Patrick Marleau.

The Canes have lost eight straight and will be looking for any positive they can get out of this game.  The team will be hoping that the return of Tuomo Ruutu and Erik Cole will spark the offense.  Tim Gleason could also start, although he and Cole are still questionable as of this posting.  The home team is led by Ray Whitney and Jussi Jokinen.

Cam Ward will be between the pipes for the Canes.  Evgeni Nabokov usually starts for the Sharks.

The Hurricanes will honor Ray Whitney before today's game.  Whitney played in his 1000th NHL game on October 21 against the Islanders and was originally drafted by the Sharks.

The game will not be televised locally but can be found on the Center Ice package or you can listen to Chuck K on 99.9 The Fan.  We will have a Live Game Thread here starting at 1PM.  I will be at the game leaving comments and answering any questions.  Game time is 1:30.

For the Sharks perspective, check out Fear the Fin.

((UPDATE)) 10:58  The Canes just activated Erik Cole from the injured reserve.  It looks like he will play today.

So Whitney gets honored for his 1,000th game today and then is shipped out on Monday?

If that happened it would be a big mistake IMO

I don’t know…I love Ray, but right now he’s the only player on our team with any value and he’s not getting any younger…

Still not a crook!

That's exactly why we can't move him

He is the one of the only players on the team that’s worth his weight in feathers at the moment. To ship him out this early would, at least to me, send the message that the season is a wash and it’s not. Not yet anyway; we need to at least get closer to the trade deadline before we start selling the team for parts.

Ignore that random “the” in the first sentence.

by caniacgirl on Nov 1, 2009 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

I understand what you’re saying, but the season is lost for us. If we’re able to turn one of our good players into a skilled, younger player and a draft pick or two, you have to make that move.

Ray is a great player, but he’s not doing us any good with the team as bad as it is. Also, he only has a limited number of years left and his value will only go down from here on out.

Still not a crook!

I completely and totally disagree that the season “is lost for us”. Until the day comes when we are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, there will always be a chance for this team. I prefer to wait until that point before writing this team off.

And this whole thing may be mute anyway, since it’s up to Ray whether he goes or not.

Not going to debate what to do or when to do it WHEN the season is “lost”.

But it is by no means lost after only 12 games.

Canes turn it around TODAY!!

Big race at Talladega today. Can Jimmie avoid the big one? Will Jr. finally get a win this year at one of his best tracks? Will Gordon let Juan Pablo Montoya push him around again this week?

Still not a crook!

And Brett returns to Green Bay. And how many INT’s does Jake throw today.

But those games are at 4pm. I’m going to the ice hockey game at 1:30. The only other games I’ve been to this season are our only two victories this year.

Nice, I hope you can keep the mojo going.

Healthy Scratch????

So if ‘Binky’ is back off IR who is the healthy scratch today….I hope it’s not Sutter, my bet is Yelle.

by canescup on Nov 1, 2009 11:45 AM EST reply actions

Or Conboy? He definitely didn’t endear himself to his coach against St. Louis.

by caniacgirl on Nov 1, 2009 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

Oh we both had it right. According to the depth chart Yelle and Conboy are the odd men out with Sutter centering the 4th line with Walker and TKO.

BUT WHAT?

we keep saying we should turn it around. but how? i mean what should we do? what can we do? it seems like we’ve tried everything. switching people. resting cam. not getting as many penalties. etc..etc…and nothing’s working. did we make bad trades? hire ineffective people? should we have gone for more speed and youth rather than size and veteran status? does anyone know? why can’t ronnie francis help figure out the offense and power plays? isn’t that his job? where is he. we seem to have a ton of defensive coaches but no offensive coaches. that’s inexcusable for a professional team. i mean really. can’t SOMEONE ^%$#@!& figure it out or will an elf have to do it?

by emmarose on Nov 1, 2009 11:47 AM EST reply actions

You like to ask questions?.. eh………..the answer is simple……play simple hockey….back to the basic……..stop changing lines…….the rest will fall into place……KEEP IT SIMPLE!

BUT THIS

1) dunno
2) drink more beer
3) nothing, we dont run the Canes, but we can drink more beer
4) nah, I don’t mind the previous trades (minus Eaves)
5) not ineffective, been to three ECFs in the past 10 years, 1 cup
6) We have youth, they play for our better half, the river rats
7) God knows
8) Email Ronnie and demand an answer
9) Yes, it is his job, he just hasnt been performing well.
10) he is probably somewhere in the RBC center
11) not a bad idea, ask Santa for a new coach instead of an elf

Return of the "Forever .500" Canes?

In a baby steps approach, if the first goal is to right the ship and get back on at least an even plateau (a return to “normalcy”), then today’s game is the exact rhythm we’ve seen out of our Canes before. Lose one big time and win the back-to-backer.

If not for our current worries, I would have pretty confidently said yesterday “Well, at least we’ll see a good game at home tomorrow.”

Let’s hope that’s the case. Later for the win streak that gets back the lost points.

Baby steps.

Ever optimistic…here’s hoping the return of Ruutu and Cole give us enough of a bump today.

by hip_check on Nov 1, 2009 2:11 PM EST reply actions

Scoreless first? That’s already an improvement, yeah?
