Carolina Hurricanes = Tropical depression, now that was funny listing our woes like that!!

Hey, now, don’t mock the tropical depression. They can still wreak havoc…

Too bad the Canes can’t..
Good game to be at?
Was pig misery to observe on the tube.

The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
Actually, it wasn’t too bad. (other than the final tally – but looking on the bright side, a point!)
OK, the first period was shit.
but we went to sit with CG in the second, and as soon as we sat down, we got to stand back up for Ruuty’s goal. And things were much less painful after that.
I have way fewer complaints about the overall play tonight. Ruuty and Pits both played like men possessed. In different ways. Ruuty was his normal self. Pits – I have never EVER seen him play so aggressively. And it was great to see.

You are awsome! I go to bed a happy man with a new perspective…
Ruuty is kicking some ass, huh?
the down side is the 23 man roster is only strocked with maybe 4 men or so. They did show up and after a dismal 1st they played like they cared. Hate to get ChrisJ’s hopes up, but was a nice change of pace..
But the tally as you mentioned still swung in the wrong direction..
’night all!

Oh joy a double minor to Timmy…
I’m gonna get drunk..
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
Go Canes!
I’m trying a different approach.. instead of cheering for them when they score, I’m going to cheer for them when the other team scores. Reverse P-shyciatry and all that.
2-0 streit
leights-time? was the second goal a PP?
No, that was a BS call (certainly the 2nd minor)

please don't let this be blowout
noooooo. too embarassing. at least let us get a couple goals. we need to erally get mad and stop accepting defeat.
The refs are anti Red tonight that call on Sutter was weak.

So the Whale dies and gets beached, what happens to a Hurricane?
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
Not Sutter apparently A Ward, still a weak call.
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
oh god
i don’t care if mo’s contract is for 3 years. i just cannot believe he’ll be kept that long if things don’t turn around quick. jr and pk aren’t that loyal. they’re gonna start getting fed up if we start getting past 14 losses.
i would love to see us turn this around in the 2nd ad 3rd and
KICK THEIR ASSES. maybe?
is it 3-0 now?
i’m following online and they are so SLOW to update anything on the website
F*CK
GODDAMMIT
why don’t the players give a sh*t anymore?
Hey Iggy that limb break yet?
lemme know when you hit ground, i’ll buy the first one.

watching MSG extolling the wondrous talents of the Islanders is nauseating. Watching this decimated team that has obviously quit is worse. We have all been armchair GMs for the last month. What do you do now when the team has obviously quit? This is like watching an accident scene on the hwy. You don’t want to look but you can’t seem t help it. This cannot continue. I do not give a RA what the ramifications to the cap are..without fans in the seats…this team is more than finished.
This is crap and we all know it.
ref we're preturbed by your call
funny, I couldn’t hear anyone chanting “let’s go canes” during that last break
yep, I was one of the ‘refs you suck’ chants.
It was loud.
by Andrea's evil twin on Nov 13, 2009 10:37 PM EST up reply actions
why though?
there is no logic to this. with their contracts…why would they just quit? cause they hate the canes management and coaches? is it packed or not? are the players hoping to get traded at this point? like they’d move to alaska if they had to? i cannot imagine just giving up when they’re pros and all.
Smoke a bong of reality, this team has given up.
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
Wasn’t personal, just the half full thing is over this team sucks and they know it.
we know it, the whole world knows it.
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
god if we could get this to a shoot out
that would rock even though we’d probably still lose the shoot out. ugh.
ya know 4-3 and 3 down, that was the time to pull the goalie..
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
I see no reason not to.
This is just hilarious at this point.
Two straight games at home with their backs against the wall being a vast understatement, and they lay absolute eggs in the 1st.
Noone seems to have an answer.
mo panicking again?
switching and switching for an answer….ohhh…nooooo
I’ll say this regarding Mo, as embarrassing as this year is becoming, we would be the laughing stock if they fired a coach they just extended 3 years after just 20 games, regardless.
not like it hasn’t happened in other sports before.

i fear for MO
i like the guy. i don’t know if he’s dealing with a mutiny or what. but i’m thinking he might be outta here before 2010. i mean seriously. we cannot get to 20 losses. jesus christ. they ain’t getting rid of francis. no way. it will be mo.
Maybe Mo can take over for Tripp, Tripp can take over in goal, and Manny can coach. It’s really rather simple…
yesh!

Center ice not working for anyone else?
Last time I’ll ask…I think my first time asking was during a goal frenzy…is the game coming on center ice on time warner in RTP for anyone else? I got the first 4 mins on my DVR so i know it was unblacked out for a bit.
I’ve had a few issues tonight. I’m watching online tho. In the middle of the play it suddenly tells me the game will be starting soon.
I think if you go to gamecenter on NHL.com they will give you a free trial of gamecenter live.
Satan is just a coping mechanism for monotheists.
But if its blacked out on center ice it will be blacked out on gamecenter :( The fact that the first 4 mins were recorded though makes me believe it shouldn’t be blacked out.
Ugh...I HATE time warner
The first 4 mins were un-blacked out…so I KNOW it should be on. Ugh!
really
rutuu is the MVP of this team. wht’s happened to cullen? he used to be so reliable. he’s like a ghost now. sutter and rutuu. jesus.
i mean
is this some sick joke that a ward is playing on the canes for getting rid of him in the first place.
or maybe he is gettign paid by the bruins to SUCK
or maybe this is for walkers punch?
Its really disturbing how bad he is

that will be talked about..

now if rutuu can do some damage in the 3rd, we could WIN A FUCKING GAME and i can see more of mo’s beautiful ties.

you’ll get a sweet deal to stick with tw…i didnt tho and switch to uverse
How do you like it? they’ve staked out where the boxes will be going up the street so it should be coming here soon
pretty sweet so far…the cust. service has been great. picture good,
the best part is probably the ability to access anything DVR’d from any room in the house
Wow...
So he had me reboot and that brought the channel back. F** Time warner.. UGH!
i thoguht sutter scored
so it’s ruutu and whitney…oops…my bad. whitney gets a lot of goals. what’s wrong with cullen?

we;re getting better
well, its not like one win means much anyway. There are no PO this year, and there isn’t a team in the NHL worse than us. We are the only team in the NHL not to be in the double digits in terms of points. WTF is this? What happened to the team from last year?
They better not fight for some stupid pride late in the season. They will really piss me off if they do not get the #1 pick because they get on some dumb win streak. We deserve the #1 pick, not the 2 or 3.
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
your view on this in hysterical
you want them to continue losing so we at least can get a #1 draft pick…hahahahahaha..don’t win canes! don’t screw it up! when will lavi be paid up??? then they might release mo
Why play to win though? what we will we gain with them winning? I have accepted the fact that they will go nowhere. A # 1 draft pick on a young winger who can play with Staal and other high draft picks that can allow the guys in Albany to move up might be the best medicine for this team. Get a younger faster team out there with guys who want to play and win.
And it is my opinion, you do not have to like it.
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
how much is mo still getting from the maple leafs?
and how much is mo’s contract with the hurricanes?

Back from Islanders Game
What in the world was Tim Gleason thinking in taking the double penalty? Even a 5th grade hockey player ought to know to avoid two junk penalties in the first three minutes of a game. Then Wallin was flopping around uselessly on one of the Islanders’ goals. I am living in an Alice in Wonderland World with the Hurricanes. On the way home, I heard Paul Maurice praise Wallin for his solid defense all year long. He must be watching different games than I am seeing. Then Aaron Ward was virtually useless yet again. I had a hard time seeing the play on which he was called for a penalty; but even if that penalty was a poor call, I saw nothing from Aaron Ward other than one hit. I am listening to John Forslund praise Rod Brind’Amour’s legacy and although I like Forslund, it is a pretty absurd position to justify Brind’Amour’s play in 2009-2010 by talking about how great Brind’Amour was in 2005-2006. The #17 I’ve seen for two seasons would struggle to be an average AHL player. Enough is enough. Brind’Amour needs to help this team by retiring. Ruutu continues to be the leader of the team. He virtually willed the Hurricanes to a tie in regulation. Sutter, too, is doing fantastic work. Here is Sutter 20 years old and at 175 lbs, pounding the net and being the team’s net presence. On the other hand, Brind’Amour is invisible and would rather eat sand that rush the net. Sutter has shown skill, leadership, and courage. Although Rodney made a key turnover in overtime, he had some excellent plays and was crashing the net again and moving the puck. Any young defenseman is going to make mistakes; but this is the kind of season in which it makes sense to play the young players and leave the slow turtle veterans up in the press box. LaRose continues to be lost on the ice and although he rushes around place to place, he seems pretty clueless about positioning and only Brind’Amour has worse hands than LaRose. The crowd was excellent and tried to get the Hurricanes mentally back in the game after Gleason’s wretch penalty and the momentum-killing effect it had on the team. It was an exciting game even if the outcome was disappointing. Even without Staal and Cam Ward, with absolutely stupid double penalty by Gleason, with Wallin flopping on the ice like a fish,Aaron Ward’s mysteriously poor play, the continued slack play by Brind’Amour, and LaRose’s inability to score, the rest of the team was giving 100%. The odds are that at some point, the Hurricanes will actually win a game. My family and I will be back on Sunday, hoping for a miracle.
+1
After the first it was a pretty good game.

I think someone stole what was left of my optimism. I left it in my seat before the overtime period started and when I turned back around, it was gone.
by East of Here on Nov 13, 2009 11:30 PM EST up reply actions
IT was really exciting game if you don’t count the basket case 1st period (which added to the drama for being so embarrassing. I’m surprised by the negativity here, really. To fight back from down 3-0 after what we’ve seen the last few weeks was remarkable and you should be jumping for joy, Caniacs! Ruutu is the leader out there now. Gleason’s unsportsmanlike was bogus – but tonight he was also taking charge and authority. The goal off the glass was a freak. But they fought back.
The crowd was huge in it’s readiness to blow the roof off. The Gleason goal was electrifiying. THere will be dozens of Sutter jerseys under the Christmas tree this year. Ruutu jerseys were definitely more visible that Staal.
Sorry but I have no use for Brind’Amour. I will look forward to him taking himself out of this to give us a chance to gain some pride back this year. “The Band” as Cole put it in his text to AWard, are no longer the leaders of the Hurricanes.
I’m looking forward to next year already. And more of the showing we got from Ruutu, Sutter, Jussi, Rodney, Gleason, and even Legace for regaining his composure and being as active tin the crease as I’ve seen in a long time from anyone. They have heart (Sisu). You may not like the final score, but they played a hell of a hockey game tonight.
So I'm guessing this would be "bottom"?
by hockeymomof2 on Nov 13, 2009 11:36 PM EST up reply actions
They showed flashes of effort at times tonight, but again, this was against the backup (1-5) goaltender for the Islanders. They were very lucky that this game wasn’t 5-0, because the Islanders hit the pipes a couple of times after the first 3 goals. The one good thing about this game was that Legace made a couple of WTF? saves that were actually fun to watch. But overall, I can’t get excited over this. Yes, they finally scored a couple of goals, but they still looked like ass for half the game. If this had been the Capitals, we’d have lost by double digits.
by East of Here on Nov 13, 2009 11:45 PM EST up reply actions
Any goalie with a 3-goal lead after what – 10 minutes? – is going to be strong. To reverse the tide like that, after going 13 games winless takes incredible guts.
At the end of the first Chip Alexander put our the most scathing comment by Twitter I have ever seen him make about the team he covers everyday (he usually handles criticism so much more “diplomatically”, like he was on their payroll)
ice_chip Canes look like a team that’s a collective basketcase.
at 11:45, thinking back on the game he just said this:
ice_chip So the final is 4-3, Isles in overtime. For Canes, glass half-empty or half-full? Feels like half-full.
I agree. I don’t remember the last time I felt that way. (maybe before the last time we played the Islanders?).
I don’t expect to make the playoffs. I just need the pain and suffering and shame to go away. No one deserves that.
So I'm guessing this would be "bottom"?
by hockeymomof2 on Nov 13, 2009 11:57 PM EST up reply actions
Well said re: Brind’Amour. I have zero use for his slack play. I think he is exploiting his days as the rock of the team and that is entirely unfair and frankly greedy. He is not coming close to earning his $3,000,000 salary (with a $3,600,000) salary cap. Whatever chances this year’s team had of playoffs is vanishing by the game. Meanwhile Brind’Amour for the past two years has been the worst player I’ve ever seen in the NHL. His +/- 14 is tied for the worst +/ in the NHL.
Unless I am mistaken, we are on the hook for Brind’amour’s entire salary for the remainder of the contract period because he was 35 or older when he signed it. So even if he retired tomorrow, we still eat his remaining contract years against our cap. There is no chance of trading him, because his value is <0. The only benefit would be that he would not be on the ice anymore. Of course, we couldn’t pull anyone up to replace him because we are already at the cap.
But it is not a coincidence that our Captain is dead last in the NHL and so is our team…
by East of Here on Nov 14, 2009 12:35 AM EST up reply actions
Is that true if the Hurricanes buy out his contract? Even so, Kostopoulos is only playing 4 to 7 minutes a game. At least glue Brind’Amour to the bench. He can provide his leadership while watching the game. His on-ice leadership is killing this team.
Y’know – I think there are only certain times during the season when you can buy out a contract. I doubt Nov – Feb are part of that. Still – this is not stuff I pretend to understand. However, if he retires, oh his own, then I would think the rules are different. We might have to pay him but he wouldn’t count towards the cap. (Has this ever happened?)
So I'm guessing this would be "bottom"?
by hockeymomof2 on Nov 14, 2009 9:26 AM EST up reply actions
HM I think he still counts towards the cap for the full contract, since he was over 35 when he signed.
The Till death do us part thing is where we are at with Rod.
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
This is my understanding. We are on the hook for his salary (cap wise) even if he retires. The only way out would be to trade him (not gonna happen) or waive him and have some other team pick him up on re-entry waivers at half price (not gonna happen) and only be on the hook for half his salary. This was my fear when they signed him for 5 more years after the cup run. It is risky giving a player that age that many years.
Also, unless I am mistaken, you cannot buy out a player’s contract during the season. I think you can only put them through the waiver process.
by East of Here on Nov 14, 2009 12:02 PM EST up reply actions
Waive Brind'Amour
Perhaps this post is over the top, but here goes:
These are times that try men’s souls. As ugly as it would be, I would send a shot across the bow and consider strongly waiving Brind’Amour. Who knows, some GM might think is would be cute to have him on the fourth line for his “leadership.” Things can’t get any worse in terms of Brind’Amour’s performance; and I am convinced he is killing the team’s morale. I would trade him for anything — the last pick in the 2020 draft, literally anything. If this team can trade Ron Francis, it can trade or waive Brind’Amour. Brind’Amour almost single-handedly cost Laviolette his job. He is leading the charge with his awful play to cost Maurice his job. Enough is enough. The Brind’Amour era is over, long live the Staal era.
I apologize if this post is too much. I don’t apologize for being convinced it’s time to face the facts as it relates to Brind’Amour.
No apologies needed. How discouraging it must be to the rest of the team that he gets so much icetime! Here again is the event sheet. He led all forwards (only Brandon Sutter slightly behind him) and it was not special teams – it was 5 on 5. If Mo can sit Walker and AWard, he can sit Rod, no?
I didn’t see but once that someone on the team tried to feed the puck to #17 down low, and he blew it and the puck went off the boards for a a turnover. What a mess – and with Staal out, who’se gonna step up? Wait – I know!
From Thursday’s practice – thanks as always to LTD;

With Staal out, I’d like to think that this is the forward Ronnie Franchise seems to be focusing on.
So I'm guessing this would be "bottom"?

The only problem is that somebody might take Brind’amour on re-entry waivers for half price, but they’d be more likely to do it just before the trade deadline and we’d still be on the hook for half his salary over the remaining year of his contract. That would not help us this year, and would only clear about 1.5 mil next year. Plus, the “player first” homers would have a meltdown.
I do not agree that Brind’amour got Lavi fired. If I read the situation correctly, the team was underperforming and management wanted to dictate coaching from the front office and Lavi resisted. When JR threw Lavi under the bus after the season and made everybody wait to see if they’d even keep Lavi, I think it fractured any remaining relationship between the two. At that point, it was only a matter of time. They had effectively castrated Lavi, and the players knew that Lavi was not the “real” coach anymore. With no real authority over the team, it was only a matter of time for Lavi.
The front office knew going into Lavi’s last season that barring a miracle, JR was going to fire him. The only reason they didn’t can him at the end of the previous season was because they knew that they would alienate the fanbase since Lavi brought them a cup the year before. I’d be willing to bet that they already had Mo’s cellphone on speed dial before last season began. It was no coincidence that when the team initially continued to suck under Maurice, that PK came out of left field and publicly threw Lavi under the bus for no apparent reason, when Lavi had not said one negative word abut the team following his firing. Trust me when I say that Mo isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
I also disagree with the notion that Eric Staal should be our default future captain. The organization has been pushing this notion for years, but I am not sold. Yes, Staal has the talent and potential to be a hall of famer. But to date, he has not fully lived up to his potential. He’s had one incredible year (05-06) and a couple of good seasons. Why does he automatically get to be the Captain? What has he done to earn it?
Is he the toughest guy out there? – Not by a long shot.
Is he the leading scorer? – Nope. That’d be Ray Whitney.
Does he lead by example? – Nope. He pouts on the ice when he doesn’t get his way.
Does he do all the extra things you expect from a marquee player? – Nope he gets caught cherry picking and frequently lollygags behind the play on defense.
Does he make the players around him better? – Nope. He himself needs his binky to perform.
Biggest salary? – Yep. Maybe that’s it…
I realize that criticizing Staal is an unpopular position to take around here. And I am not saying that he sucks. He has the ability at times to take over a game and put the team on his back. But he also takes shifts (and whole nights) off from time to time. He gets tripped up and flops around on the ice begging for a call when he needs to get his ass up and get back in the play. When have you ever seen Brind’amour do that? You haven’t. This makes me wonder if Staal is truly “C” material. I have my doubts. If I had to pick a “C” right now, it’d be Whitney, Walker or Gleason. Whitney because he is a professional. Walker, because he will stand up for his teammates. And Gleason because he is not afraid to tell it like it is with no excuses (“That’s what happens when you suck!”)
Brind’amour is going nowhere. The only hope we have is that they find a way to cut his ice time. Mo is going nowhere, he is the chosen one. What you see is basically what you are going to get for this year. Get used to it.

Lavi cooked his own goose when he couldn’t go through with the exit-meetings at the end of the season after losing to Florida to miss the playoffs. Everyone including my then 10-yr old knew that was a shocking coach- failure on his part.
How’s about Gleason gets the C, next year (assuming Whitney does not get re-signed or gets traded at the deadline), and Ruu and Sutter with the A. Total overhaul in the locker room chemistry there. All Staal has to worry about is playing hockey and selling tickets.
So I'm guessing this would be "bottom"?

I disagree with this. What’s an unpopular position around here is when people come to this site with a “holier than thou” attitude claiming that the only people who support Staal with facts, such as, Staal is one of the top 5 goal scorers in the NHL since the lockout, are either stupid, delusional, homers, or afraid they will lose their press passes. That’s the attitude that is unpopular around here. (I am not saying this directed to you, I think you have made pretty fair arguments and you have not insulted anyone)
So you are saying that Rod Brind’Amour never took a shift off and never pouted?
My opinion is that there is no such thing as a perfect NHL hockey player. You can find negative in anyone. If people choose to dwell on only the negative and ignore everything else, that’s fine. As long as they don’t attack another person’s integrity or intelligence, any opinion is welcome here.

And the Canes STILL suck!!!
BTW I agree with HM, Lavi screwed himself.
Bob on this attacking intelligence thing, define intelligent. Also does it count if you are mean to someone that has none? Like if I pick on LCD and he doesn’t get it, does that get my hall pass snagged?
Inquiring minds want to know!!

Dammit!! A conspiracy!!!
I don’t know how the Wimmin turned you, but I refuse to use a dictionary or a Thesaurus!
It would ruin my image and taint my brain!
Oh woe be to the blog, the NBO (New Blog Order) has infiltrated the very leader himself!! The era of the gramatical elite WEW is upon us.
Iwill not yeild!!!!!

No worries Bob! I take care NOT to intentionally insult specific people/posters. And when I said “around here”, I was a bit careless, in that I meant the area (all sites/media in general) and not this PARTICULAR site. But I can see how it could be taken that way. If so, my bad. I actually think the balance here is more “even” than most places (and definitely moreso than my usual ‘home’). It’s all good.
I also took care to point out that Staal has the talent and ability to take this team on his back and take over games. We saw him do this several times late last year. To deny him his abilities is not fair to him, regardless of his (real or perceived) negatives. I do not dislike Staal, but I do question his “leadership” qualities. I also wonder why it is just expected that he be the next Captain. I, myself, am not convinced that this is the best course of action, as set forth above.
And no, I am not saying definitively that Rod has never taken a shift off. But I’ve never seen him obviously do so (IMHO). As for pouting, I have not seen that either. I have seen him question a call or give the ref a WTF? look after a non-call. But in critical points of the game, you don’t see Roddy laying on the ice glaring at the ref or jawing at the ref, then LAZILY skating to the bench while the puck speeds down the ice towards his own net. With Staal, you do see this. I don’t think that is leadership material. I think it is immaturity.
As one example that I pointed out a while ago in another thread, several games ago, we were on the powerplay with Staal on the point. Staal tried to take a shot from the blueline and the defender slashed at Staal’s stick during the shot and his stick broke. The puck squibbled into the slot and made its way to the corner where we got control. Staal dropped his broken stick and stood there glaring at the ref for a full second or two. Then, he LAZILY skated back over to the bench and got a new stick, and SLOWLY skated back to the offensive zone, taking his own sweet time in doing so. In the meantime, we are 4 on 4 and just killing valuable PP time trying to maintain possession. What I would have liked to have seen was Staal dumping the broken stick, hauling ass back to the bench for a new stick, and hauling ass to get back into the play as soon as possible. He can bitch to the officials at the next stoppage. There is something to be said for hustle. Just ask Chad ‘I-now-make-$1.5-million-a-year’ LaRose. I expect more from Staal than that. And for $6 million per, I think the management and fans should too.
That’s just my 2 cents.

Amen Brother East, High Priest of the Truth!!
Your spelling and grammar are a bit too clean, you sure your not with “them”????

Sorry for being too grammatically correct, but if you saw my student loan payment every month, you’d know why I am this way. It’s sort of like the old “don’t waste food, there are kids starving in Africa” adage. I paid for it, I may as well use the hell out of it.
