Justin Peters Recalled from Albany

Carolina Hurricanes recall goalie Justin Peters. (photo by LTD)

The Carolina Hurricanes announced this morning that they just recalled Justin Peters from the Albany River Rats.  Goalie Michael Leighton went down with a lower body injury during the game in Montreal last night and apparently will not be available for tomorrow night's game against Toronto.

Peters, 23, has posted a 6-5-2 record, a 2.43 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage in 13 games with the River Rats this season. The Blythe, Ont., native is in his fourth professional season and has yet to make his NHL playing debut, though he did serve as the Hurricanes; backup goaltender for four games in December 2008. Peters (6’1", 205 lbs.) has posted a 42-56-6 record and a 2.92 goals-against average in 114 career AHL regular-season games with Albany since turning professional in 2006-07. Carolina drafted Peters in the second round, 38th overall, of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

The team sent Tim Conboy to Albany to make room for him within the team's salary cap.

obviously, legace plays,
but it would be interesting to see peters get a game,
but i doubt it will happen.

Peters has a better record in the AHL than Legace had in the AHL….

And has been much better than our 3 NHL goaltenders…. I say give him the start.

But that will never happen… Unless Legace complains about his playing time…. in which event he would find himself taking a pay raise just before being sent to the ECHL (See Arturs Irbe).

Sounds like the bloggers at Canes Country are beginning to turn against Legace.

I think that's more of an artifact vs the coaches.....

and their decision to start Legace instead of Leighton who had been doing his best imitation of a door mat, I mean “team player” and took it in stride.

When all else fails, read the instruction manual.

My Guess on Goalkeepers

My guess and hunch is that Leighton is put on waivers before Thanksgiving. I get the feeling the coaching staff doesn’t have warm, fuzzy feelings about him. Every team has a love/hate relationship with its goalies in general and its backup goalies in particular.

agreed. It will also be interesting to watch what effect (if any) Legacy’s injury has on Peter’s chances in goal.

I think Legace will get this next game and if he doesn’t do well then we may see Peters in the next game. Timing would be right. What do the Hurricanes have to lose at this point?

I hope Leighton stays, at least for this season. I thought he looked really good last night, and I have a feeling that if he gets better soon, he’ll continue to look even better. I have faith in the guy…I don’t know why, but I do.
That said, I thought Legace (who I kept calling Manace on accident last night…much easier if you mix the first and last names ;)) did very well during the shootout. And it would also be very interesting to see Peters play. Guess we’ll see…..

Cory, Any idea who the Rats will call up to replace Peters? Since I am going to see them in Norfolk is there anyone I need to pay attention to for the future?

Murphy will indeed be the No. 1. The Rats have called up Mike Morrison from Florida. Morrison had a cup of coffee with Ottawa and Phoenix in 2005-06 and 2006-07, respectively.

not speaking for Cory, Caneshope, but I’d be pretty excited about watching Murphy.

Who would have guessed we’d see Legace/Peters as our goalie tandem when the season started? What a freaking mess.

You said it. That spells Trouble with a capital “T”…

@Caneshope – My best guess is that Murphy will start tonight here in Albany and Morrison will be called up from the Everblades, however I don’t know if they’ve done that yet or if he will arrive in time for tonight’s game. Definately keep an eye on Murphy.

I wish they would give Justin the start at least once. That way, if he gets lit up, they can put Legace in. That way, the possibility exists that we will open the newspaper the next day and see the figuratively and literally accurate headline of:

“Canes pull Peters during 6-1 loss”.
