small so far, might be a late arriving one. horrible traffic jam coming from the south

Back from the game
The crowd seemed about 12,000 to me. What is the official number?
i love you ivan
do you have blue eyes too? where do you live?
I really like these line combos. Brindy doesn’t suck nearly as bad it when he’s getting 4th line minutes…
probably because he doesn’t have enough time to make awful mistakes.

is the game being streamed?
I’m up in Chicago, so I can’t watch the game and sister-in-law doesn’t have center ice
I tried
but every game but this one was listed. Oh well, I can listen on line and follow the stats too.
Thanks Ivan
I've tried
Channelsurfing.net
and
justin.tv

sounds like the Canes are on their heels right now.

we do know we can come back after last night
so that’s something
Canes dominated that period.
Sucks to come away with a one goal deficit because for awhile there that was shaping up to be one of the better 1st periods they’ve had.
Corvo had some odd miscues in his own end, let a few pucks drift past him not fully aware of what was going on. Hope he isn’t over thinking things right now.
Indeed it is.
Nice to have the team back that doesn’t wilt in the heat of, gasp, a goal by the other team.
true, but they were on their heels pretty bad there after that goal. good thing they didn’t give up another one.

hi everyone, how`s the game so far? I understand that Ruu attacked again!

hey folks
Rod has played his best of the season.
We look pretty darn good tonight…lots of chances
Brind'Amour
I think it was Brind’Amour’s best game. He had some odd moments, as when he was ahead of the pack on a breakaway and it was not a thing of beauty. In my view, he can make his best contribution on the fourth line with less than ten minutes of time on ice. It helps the team to have four lines that can play.
How good has pits been
i mean hes playin awesome
cully.....
don’t want to be a potty mouth like that commentator…oh cully…….
wonder if that dynamic would hurt or help?
strange to think that way…but we’ve compensated pretty well now
In my mind, i cant see or justify sending Sutter back down, but don't know if i really comprehend our other options that well.
now way in hell
that would scare me to death..he’s as reliable as ruutu
my background is soccer
so i’m useless…i’m still trying to appreciate the dynamics of hockey..love it though
Staal's Return and Make Up of the Lines
Interesting that Maurice said he might keep the Whitney/Sutter/Cole and the Jokinen/Cullen/Ruutu lines intact. He also said he might try Staal at wing. It would be crazy either to send Sutter down or to change the Jokinen/Cullen/Ruutu line.
Staal needs top minutes to be effective. It would be very interesting to see how a Cole/Sutter/Staal line might work. That is a big, fast line. I’ll be interested to see what others think. As long as Brind’Amour is on the fourth line, and as long as Sutter is getting top minutes along with Staal, and as long as the Jokinen/Cullen/Ruutu line is intact, the lines can probably shift around some. On the other hand, it has taken almost one quarter of the season to get lines that seem to work well together. It’s always a bad idea to try to fix things that aren’t broken.
I heard that from Mo post game too – about keeping the top 2 lines intact because the chemistry seems to be working – even after Staal comes back. I mean – I love that idea – but I have no idea how that’s gonna actually work. Mo going to put Staal out with Walks/LaRose and Sammi…..? As a 3rd line? Never in a million years..
And then, when Staal and Walker come back, Dwyer’s back to Albany, but who else will be out? or named “healthy scratch”? – or maybe someone else will be injured by then…

Lines After Staal Returns -- Some Guesses Based on Maurice Comments
Here goes with a pure guess:
Whitney/Sutter/Staal
Jokinen/Cullen/Ruutu
Samsonov/Yelle/Cole
LaRose/Brind’Amour/Walker
Y'never know
Save these – in case you’ve nailed it. Really.
but observations (which you may even share)
1- Staal on Sutter’s wing blows my mind. earth-shattering.
2 – Cole on the 3rd line is hard to grasp – though possibly right. Have he and Sammi ever been on the same line -even last spring? Don’t remember how that looked. Interesting combination of opposites. I like Yelle on the 3rd line. he’s really emerged this month
2 – TKO has actually been getting increased TOI the last couple games, I believe. And I like what I’ve seen. Lots of energy.I’d hate to see him the healthy scratch.

Lines After Staal Returns -- revised
Whitney/Sutter/Staal
Jokinen/Cullen/Ruutu
Samsonov/Yelle/Cole
(Walker)LaRose/Brind’Amour/Kostopoulos
I think Staal and Sutter on the same line would be a waste. Need to be #1 and #2 centers.
So, all my teams suck!
I couldn’t figure out how to do that unless Jokinen/Cullen/Ruutu because a third line and I thought they should be playing second line minutes or unless the Jokinen/Cullen/Ruutu lines was split up — which Maurice said he was not going to do.
I think next year Boychuk may well be on the first line with Staal. I am assuming there will be a top tier power forward on that line as well. I am guessing that kind of trade will occur before Thanksgiving.
My Prediction is a Trade before Thanksgiving 2009
Again, I could be completely mistaken; but my guess is that Jim Rutherford will make a trade before Thanksgiving 2009. He has said repeatedly that he is committed to making the team younger, bigger, and faster. Jim Rutherford is extremely straightforward and when he says something, he follows through until it is done. Accordingly, all I can envision is that our players with the most trade value would be (1) Whitney [with his NTC]; (2) Cullen [who is playing great and whose line is rocking]; (3) Corvo — who has had some confidence issues and whose contract is up this year; (4) LaRose [who is hustling but only has one goal] and (5) Cole — but it seems clear the Hurricanes already have a shortage of power forwards and Cole has been banging bodies around and is there to provide physicality and speed.
Based on what I see, I don’t see any trade involving Whitney [unless he really, really likes the team and the opportunity to end his career someplace other than Carolina] or Cullen. So if there is a trade, it seems that Corvo and possibly Corvo and LaRose will be traded. I don’t think Cole is going to be traded because power forwards are very difficult to find. The acquisition of Kostopoulos and LaRose’s new contract meant he had to score and produce points at a top nine rate.
After looking at the options and the likely emergence of Rodney, McBain, and Carson for defense and Bowman and Boychuk next year, I think Corvo will be traded and that LaRose probably will be traded as well.
At this point, I can’t see Rutherford trading players who are producing and particularly players who are working well with Sutter.
I’m not sure, but I think your baiting?
JR is liar and a half! Mo’s job is secure…the week before he’s replaced by Lavi and then back at ya, exit meetings aren’t critical and Lavi is secure..whack, in comes Mo. What about Rodney and the spot is his to lose, and Sutter..Look JR, is liar. That is a good trait in a GM, I think, so I don’t get your ref. to his statements which arer bullshit. "Younger, bigger, faster "turned out to be older, fatter and slower.
JR couldn’t sell his BS in a desert or ice in hell.
A firesale with hopes of reaquiring in the summer is his only shot and right now isn’t the right time. <y .02 is you don’t see squat for a good spell.
R U baiting or drinking koolaid?

The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
Jim Rutherford
I simply disagree with your assessment of Jim Rutherford. I think he is a very honorable man. As a General Manager of an NHL team, there are limitations which I think are obvious and almost self-evident to the degree he can be candid. I also think he made a conscious decision this year to go with some veterans on one year deals because he felt the team as constituted with some veterans would make a deep run into the playoffs. He would then focus next year on transitioning to more youth. I’ve had the pleasure of talking with him in detail about the team early this year and found him to be extremely direct and open.
I checked around and others who knew him had the same experience in their dealings with him. “Younger, bigger, faster” is shown to me at the recent draft and I think that pattern will be evident in any trade. With regard to Rodney, my take is the Tom Rowe, Paul Maurice, and Ron Francis felt Rodney needed another year of experience and strengthening. With regard to Sutter, it was a hard decision in my view. Rutherford really treasures Sutter’s ability. As I see it, Rutherford wanted to make certain Sutter had time to develop at least half the year in the AHL to get confidence and strength. Sutter is the real deal. In an ideal world, Sutter, Boychuk, and Bowman would have had time to hone their skills in the AHL to the point that there was far less risk that they would lose confidence when they were playing full time next year. Sutter is amazing and he surprised even the experts with the speed of his development.
The new players added included Aaron Ward, Alberts, and Harrison. Wallin was by necessity given more top line minutes than in recent seasons. Aaron Ward must surely be hurt because his play has been extremely disappointing. Alberts has done exactly what has been asked of him and nobody expects him to be blazing fact. On the other hand, he is a highlight film of hits.
Wallin is Wallin and speed is absolutely not his forte.
In short, I think Jim Rutherford will not engage in a widespread firesale; but I think he will obtain another power forward. It is my guess and only my guess.
So, obviously you and I have vastly different opinions about the integrity of Jim Rutherford. From my personal contact with him and what others who have dealt with him in various ways have confirmed, I found him to be a person who is honorable, frank, and humble.
Well, rather than being a reach around, look to his track record. Liar, liar, liar and this year he added failure to the list. Enjoy your exper. dream world. I bet he wishes it were reality, but it’s not.
I’ll give you credit, even ChrisJ isn’t that far to the koolaid left!

To me, this highlights the fact that Cullen (good as he is, mind you) is now expendable for this year’s team.
That’s why recent trade rumors involving him seem credible to me. Sutter can easily be Cullen as far as function for the team.
What was once thought to be our future third-line center is now our once and future second-line center. His potential has been upgraded in the org’s view.
New Lines After Staal Returns
Cole is an interesting issue. It is possible to run a Sutter/Staal/Cole line; but that changes the dynamic of Whitney and Sutter with Sutter centering. Cole did not fare well in Edmonton on the right wing.
Kostpoulos has been underutilized thus far. He was brought to the team to bring intensity and physicality. I agree that he has done a tremendous job and deserves much more ice time than he has received thus far. This issue of time on ice is going to be much more complex next year.
Manny has played pretty well
doesnt seem to be overplaying the puck as much
he was mad at himself last night
admitted his players had to save him cause he messed up
Crowd
It was disappointing to see that the crowd wasn’t really as large as I would have hoped. It was again an enthusiastic crowd; and it was fun hockey to watch.
at least we haven't dipped below 12000
that would suck
Stats
Boxscore showing Chad leading hits with 3. Pitkanen leading shots with 6. Also shows 6 MS for him so lots of pucks headed toward the net from his stick.
1st game in a good while where I’ve noticed the boys seemingly having fun playing hard. They seem to be tuned in better to me, expecting to win instead of hoping.
they're connecting...reading each other
someone wrote a good article from weeks ago that they looked like they had never played together in their lives…now they look like they’ve always played together…some chemistry finally

BTW-anyone watching catch John saying Brindy was “squeezing something out at the end of a shift” in 1st? OK, back to hockey.
Hey all! Is this game in HD in Raleigh?
Stupid columbia sc fox sports not showing it. Thank god for Center Ice, but has lightning feed only in HD.
sutter with the faceoff
do NOT send him back down…apparently JR told him to buy a house in NC…he’s staying…staal…i don’t know…
For sure. Similar to the Carey Price save on Cullen in the shoot out. He just got the toe of his skate on it.
i watched that in replay
that goalie got SO lucky
let's hope
never say never…look at our comeback
Made a great play thursday night that set up two passes and a goal-he probably has more goal setups where he does not get assist credit (too many passes in between usually) then anyone.
Samsonov
When he skates hard and keeps it simple, he is amazing. In fairness, he is helped by having somebody on his line with good hands and who is quick.
3-1
i am so content you’d think i was eating oysters with beer
so good to get a win like that, no drama

You do realize that Cam is the only one in need of a home nurse right? Other people aren’t on the list. LOL
But between your cooking ability and the medical training (albeit limited) Jen and I bring, I think we’re a lock for the job.
My bad, I thought we were talking for the team in general… I’ll leave him to you then. Just keep me in mind for the future, in the unfortunate event that certain player(s) might need our care…

Coming into a thread late is similar to coming into a conversation late, but at least I can scroll up and see what in the world you’re talking about.

It’s good to see this team find their identity. They fought hard, made good passes, got into the dirty areas, and beat a team well ahead of them in the standings.
When Staal and Cam are back, hopefully the confidence they’ve earned during this tough stretch will only make them better. Good time for a quick roadie, and good that Staal and Leights are going on the trip. Chemistry seems to be so important for these guys; i’m excited to see that they are starting to pull together.
Long row to hoe, but I don’t think any of us would trade a cough playoff spot cough for a high draft pick.
Only thing I am dissappointed in is the fact that Joni or Nici didn’t score so all the Scandanavian would have scored. But lets not all get toooooo happy. Last time we won in a shootout and then won the next game in regulation, we dropped the next 14 sooo…..hopefully that won’t be the case.
