The Return of Staal? Canes at Ducks Game Day Preview - (UPDATE 6 p.m.)
Word on the street and in the local radio studios, is that Eric Staal will make his return to the Carolina Hurricanes lineup tonight, as the Canes, (5-13-5) visit the also struggling Anaheim Ducks, (8-11-3). Both of these teams had high expectations at the beginning of the season and obviously, both have disappointed so far.
If Staal does return as expected, one might wonder where they will put the star forward? Coach Paul Maurice indicated after the last win on Saturday night, that he wanted to keep the top two lines together. Although, Tuomo Ruutu had to leave the Dallas game early on Monday night, so his position on the second line might open up if he can't play tonight. (We sent an email to the Canes asking for his status, and as soon as we hear something we will pass it along).
Staal has missed the last 10 games with an upper body injury, but according to an interview between Joe Ovies and John Forslund on 620 The Buzz yesterday, the center had a tremendous recent practice session and was ready to rock and roll.
Will they try Staal at the wing position and keep Brandon Sutter in the top line center spot? According to a recent poll we had on the site, most readers, (73%), seem to think it's worth a try. As soon as we get official word about where Staal will play, we will post something here.
The Canes have struggled mightily while playing the role of visitor and have still yet to win a road game this season, (0-8-3). The franchise has not had such a poor start on the road since the 1981-82 season when they lost their first 12.
After their failure on the powerplay on Monday night, they have dropped to 28th in the league, (14.4%), while with the man advantage.
The team is also 29th in the league in scoring, (GF 53), and 29th in the league in goals allowed, (GA 83). They are last in the East in both of those categories. They also lead the league again in taking minor penalties, not a good thing unless you are playing fantasy hockey.
Statistically, it's hard to find much positive.
The Ducks are led by Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf.
Look for Jonas Hiller to be in goal for the Ducks against Manny Legace for the Canes.
UPDATE: Check that, Giguere is expected to start for the Ducks.
Hiller is 1-0-0 lifetime against Carolina while Legace is 11-2-2 lifetime against Anaheim. Giguere is 1-3-1 lifetime against Carolina.
The game will be televised locally in HD by FS Carolinas and will start at 10 p.m. Eastern. You can also listen in on 99.9 The Fan and we will open the Game Thread here at 9.
If we get any official update later on regarding Staal or Ruutu, we will make another post later today.
Check out Anaheim Calling for Ducks news.
(UPDATE:) Staal has been confirmed in the lineup by a Canes Twitter update. John Forslund told "The Insiders" that Ruutu is out for tonight.

Oh, and thanks for asking about Ruuty’s status. The lack of media coverage during this west coast trip is very frustrating.

Boy, if that doesn’t just say it all.
Cold hard truth, Elsker!
I doubt Mo will find the stones to stick Staal anywhere but 1st line center. Just my gut feeling. Mo is rather pusillanimous and so is the org. when it comes to Staal.

I've done my part (fishtank update)
Just finished another 30% water change on the fishtank. The pH is 7 (perfect) and the ammonia and nitrites are well below toxic levels. I even vacuumed the gravel some and got rid of a lot of crap. However the water is still cloudy – even if the chemistry is finally perfect.
Cam Ward shrimp (who we acquired Oct 24th) is still hanging out behind the filter intake and seems to want to isolate himself from the others. You may remember he molted around Halloween (we all remember the Flyers game) and he really went solo later that week, a few days before the Columbus game.
Eric Cory Catfish Staal, whose pectoral fins got cropped somehow about Oct 28th – (which just so happens to correspond with the St Louis game) seems better, tho I wouldn’t call him 100% restored. Erik looks strong.
(I’m not making these coincidental dates up – check my posts on the matter)
Mo is sniffing the gravel looking for something. Whitney is still everywhere, misses nothing, very flashy. Top-4 D (Gleason, Corvo, Pits, and still, unfortunately, Babchuk-fish) as wells as the 4 refs are strong.
Cullen and LaRose, my latest additions with Cam, look like they’ve grown a tad. In case you wondered, I can’t say they enjoy the bubbler anymore than the others do. They swim with the group mostly. I so want to get a Sutter fish – but there’s hardly room in a 20 gallon tank as it is. Aquarium cap problems. Maybe if one of the other non-player fish dies (or should we just send one to a tank in Albany?), we can then add Sutter to the tank.
The only fish who seem off these days are the 3 remaining members of the Storm Squad – which are now 3+ years old -a little mature for tetras. Apparently they’re tired of cheering this disappointing season and the bad chemistry issues. Stormy the frog looks a little slow too.
And, in case you’re wondering, I can’t find a thing wrong with Ruutu-fish (or Jokinen-fish either since I can’t tell them apart). Hopefully that’s the case in Anaheim too.
The water change is significant because I did a water change last Thursday as well (first major one since pre-season, as part of the chemistry-correction strategy), and the Canes then went on to win the Toronto game that night and then Tampa Bay. Can’t change it more than once a week, but I will keep it up as long as it keeps working.

BIG NEWS! Cam came out tonight and is clinging to one of the plastic plants. I also couldn’t find Ruutu for quite a while. Jussi was all by himself. Ruu is hiding in the plants away from the crowd.
Staal was taking a nap. And the big ugly pleco we call “Toronto” that always hides in the Situation Room Sunken Galleon came out ! (this NEVER happens) and is hiding, bumping fins with Mo in the army tank, which is where the Zamboni usually resides. Big shake-up in there tonight.

Hurricanes Hockey: Never for the faint of heart.
by Carolyn Christians on Nov 25, 2009 6:13 PM EST up reply actions
Maybe this makes sense.
Put him with two players that are fairly low in confidence at the moment, so they will be thinking “pass” first, instead of “shoot”, thereby feeding the black hole that is Staal on the shoot/pass continuum.
This way, it doesn’t deprive the team of any scoring opportunities, like it would pairing him with potential goal scorers.
soooo, I’ll play A-Dog for a moment
Sutter, Cole, Whitney
Cullen, Jokinen, Tommy K?
Staal, LaRose, Samsonov
Yelle, Brindy, Dwyer
Wuddya think?
Hurricanes Hockey: Never for the faint of heart.
by Carolyn Christians on Nov 25, 2009 7:00 PM EST up reply actions
Love to see Kostopolous get such a chance, but Mo probably leaves him stuck on the fourth line with Brind’Amour and Dwyer.
Maybe Yelle gets the chance to go top 9 with Cullen and Jokinen? He’s been in those ranks lately. An all-center line, if so.
Thought he had TKO on the third line a bit last week – with Yelle and Sammi? (Montreal, Toront0) He’s no where near Ruuty for skill, but he loves to park in the crease and battle…and is young enough for 2nd line minutes. Is he fast? Can he pass?
Maybe I got the order mixed up.
Sutter, Cole, Whitney
Staal, LaRose, Samsonov
Cullen, Jokinen, Tommy K
Yelle, Brindy, Dwyer
Hurricanes Hockey: Never for the faint of heart.

Lines Tonight
I assume that they will move Tom Kostopoulos up to the second line and then may try Samsonov/Cullen/Jokinen on the second line and move Kostopoulos down. I looked online at Carolina Hurricanes and they have not shown Ruutu out, yet, or Staal in, yet. In my view it shows how important it is to have Ruutu healthy and also how important it is for Jim Rutherford to obtain another power forward.
They just tweeted it from Anaheim. It’s official.

Totally off topic but...
What’s the weather like in NC today? Any one here in Cary?

Nice. I’m in LA about 30 miles north of Honda Center in Anaheim. High of 78 today, low of 47. Wow, I just realized that’s a 30 degree swing. That’s what happens when you live in a desert.

Big #8 just got sent to the locker room for a hit from behind. Maybe he’ll get suspended for our game on the 30th.
A TRUE CANIAC......YES I AM........
Great news! Should be interesting to see if he gets preferential treatment with all the suspensions this season. I’m headed over to the Game thread Bob just put up.

Sudden and awful realization
I was so excited that I was going to be able to watch a ‘Canes game on TV tonight I neglected to realize that I wouldn’t be listening to John and Tripp, but the dreaded Brian “Homer” Hayward. Ugh.

Line Roulette
So, although Bob and 73% of the poll thought putting Staal and Sutter together might be worth a try, it wasn’t until the last minute of the game that Mo finally threw the correct combination of bones behind the bench to randomly produce that line, and the Staal/Sutter goal that resulted.
Honestly, he couldn’t even last a couple of periods before he had Staal out there between Whitney and Cole, just like “the old days”. I don’t know why they bother to make any player management plans whatsoever.
No wonder no one has any chemistry with each other. It’s like rolling Yahtzee for line combinations around here from shift to shift.
Hello lottery pick. Thy name is Canes.
