However, if you look up sisu in ye olde Finnish dictionary, you do see a picture of Tuomo Ruutu.

I think Hall. Even though Seguin has pushed into first, I think Hall will retake it before seasons end.

From tsr draft preview
Take note that most scouting services will have Taylor Hall pegged as the top player available in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, the reality is that right now there really isn’t much separating some of the players at the top and they are essentially interchangeable.
Hall has been on NHL scouts radar for quite some time and really burst onto the scene with the Kingston Minor Midgets en route to being selected 2nd overall by the Windsor Spitfires in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection two seasons ago.
When you describe Hall’s game, the first word that comes to mind is explosive. Taylor Hall is an extremely good skater and has the ability to make things happen all on his own, very reminiscent of Pavel Bure in the mid 1990s. Hall is a very unique skater as he bends over almost at a 90 degree angle in his stride, but make no mistake, when he reaches his top speed there are very few that can catch him; and it doesn’t take him long to hit that high gear.
With that being said, there is some cause for concern in Hall’s game. He’s prone to making bad turnovers in transition, and sometimes he makes poor decisions with the puck in the offensive zone as well. While his plus/minus rating has been very solid the past two seasons, he is susceptible to being caught out of position, leading one to wonder how much playing for a strong Windsor club is sheltering some defensive concerns in his game.
This season will be a big one for Hall if he wants to be the first pick in 2010. Scouts will be looking for him to really break out offensively the way they expected him to last season. Hall has already showed that he can be a big time player in the playoffs, picking up both the OHL Playoffs and Memorial Cup MVP awards, but now is the time to show that he has the ability to put up big time numbers while proving that he isn’t a liability at the other end of the ice.
Central Scouting
just released an update of their list for the OHL, and now have him #1, just ahead of Hall
Seguin
Doesn’t matter who’s rated #1 at the end of the season.
Seguin is a legacy. He’s a lock if we have a shot at him. LOL!
Interesting point too, since he plays for Plymouth… hmmmm…….

Let’s put it this way. We’re bound to know him. And PK’s junior org thought enough of him to acquire him in the first place.
anyone listening to WRAL/ – Mike is getting pretty worked up. No pregame interview because of conditions last night – is that because of the travel schedule or because no one was fit to speak on the record?

I read somewhere (rumor only) that he’s had a knee issue. Patrick Dwyer’s taking his spot in the lineup tonight.
SISU
Also, Joni did not make the trip. It was the collision with Brandon that caused his issue, I think some folks were wondering if it was something that happened later, but ChuckandtheletterK referenced the collision as the cause.
SISU
Why am I drawing a blank on the Pits-Sutter collision? I had my Brandon iso-cam in full force last night but can’t remember it.
It was in the first period, in front of our net. I’m not sure there would be anything in the PBP that would reference it. I took pictures at the time but I think I deleted them, so not exactly sure when.
SISU
It was inferred.

Leighton is in goal
I like him but I still feel it wasn’t Manny’s fault for last night. Mo’s “defense” left him high and dry.
When all else fails, read the instruction manual.
Agreed
Maybe there was one Manny could have gotten that he didn’t, but the real issue was the D not blocking obvious give-and-go lanes.
We just got used to Ward’s incredible ability to make those saves anyways.

Wallin is good when it counts
he’s the guy with the stick in the crease bailing his goalie out.

logical assessment
why doesn't someone say to mo.....
the offense has got to be sharp and aggressive and the defense is NEVER on its heels waiting for the other team to score. be proactive. make the plays rather than waiting for them to happen to you. we’re setting ourselves up to be attacked. terrible strategy.

No,
When the Canes were on the attack, they didn’t take penalties as they controlled the tempo.
When they have to play “catch up”, then they get a trip to the sin bin.
Also, that was a great dive by the Sabres.

That's Mo's hockey
When he takes his players out of the game they are best at, attacking, then they try to play Mo hockey and aren’t sure where the others are

we ply well with 2 man fore check because our biggest weakness is when the other team cycles.
this doesnt happen as much with 2 man forecheck because generlly the chances for the other teams are on the rush, and we are pretty good at stopping thatl, unless its odd man.
but when we set up and let them cycle around, we get scored on.

A. WARD'S PENALTY
Brilliant hockey mind. Pinch in with all three forwards pounding the net; then after being beaten take a baby weak hooking penalty. That is why we have veterans, to show youngsters like Rodney — sort of, “Rodney, did you see that? never, ever, ever, do what Aaron Ward just did.”
i read the n&o today and apparenlty the players were SO pissed about last night,
theypre not going to let a loss happen agan
To be honest, the only really objectionable thing so far has been the PP.

the first year after the cup winning year,
forslund was a noticable dick to tripp.
and it was suprising, and sometimes funny.
but i think in the last couple of years froslund has come to love tripp
and they get along well (on air at least)
Now that's one I haven't figured out yet.

Through Two Periods
Through two periods, actually very shocking:
(1) Power play is terrible;
(2) Aaron Ward is terrible;
(3) Brind’Amour confirms he cannot score a goal with an open, gaping net and no back pressure — that’s the reason he gets paid $3,000,000.00, I suppose.
And yet...
We’re leading.

It’s just a terrible lack of respect for their goaltenders to leave them hanging like this EVERY TIME they put up a strong performance, the team ends up leaning on them and costing them the win. This team doesn’t support each other.

I bet there’s players on the Canes playing to be traded on purpose. I can’t really blame them, I wouldn’t want to be on this team either.
Let's concede
that any winning or success will only delay what we need and should be inevitable…complete rehaul and rebuild. EMBRACE THE DISFUNCTION!!!!! It will lead us to better days and a cllean divirce from the past.
Not pissed anymore
Morbidly interested in watching this train wreck…still love hockey…still love the Canes (generally) and will savor the decline as it will lead to new and better things

I’m a NC State fan, the High School Varsity basketball team I play for has gone 4-47 the last two years including a 77-17 loss. I think this Hurricanes team is worse than the worst Washington nationals, Detroit Lions, NC State, Washington Wizards,Tampa Bay DEVIL Rays, New York Islanders, NJIT, and my 4-47 high school team. But the worst players from the worst teams those franchise’s have ever had, put them on skates, and they could probably beat this team. As long as they were losing going into the third period

Hurricanes Hockey:
Never for the faint of heart.

+1, but then the Canes have the ability to make nearly every goalie look that good

scouting people he can trade for. No need to scout how they play. If we asked any team we are going to play to give us their plays, lines and starting goalie they would and we would still lose. He’s looking for a trade.

Entirely Predictable: One Step Closer to Taylor Hall
Exactly predictable. Brind’Amour can’t hit an empty net. Ward gives up goal after goal. Power Play is totally inefffective. Team melts down in the third period. We take another step closer to victory, i.e. being able to draft Taylor Hall.
It is not so much watching hockey as watching a train wreck on ice. Still, that is part of the process for improvement. Here are my list of players who need to be on different teams next year:
1. Aaron Ward (not re-signed)
2. Wallin (not re-signed);
3. Brind’Amour (retired and bought out);
4. LaRose (traded);
5. Samsonov (traded);
6. Walker (not re-signed)
The savings on salary will allow for signings to fill whatever gaps are not filled by the players in Albany. We will see these huge failures of the Hurricanes replicate themselves until this season mercifully comes to an end — even nightmares like this season have to end sometime.
Wallin
Yet again Wallin is the only defenseman who did not break down tonight. The only D man with a + next to his number. He is the one guy keeping us from giving up 6 or 7 a night.
THE ONLY ONE ON THE ENTIRE TEAM WITH A + BESIDE HIS NAME!!!!
"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
at one point in the game last night they put the team leaders for +/- up on the screen.
the team leaders were +1, +1 and 0
I think that says… WE COLLECTIVELY SUCK!

been following you guys all night and my take on the team's bad karma
here’s my two cents’ worth—as a STH I feared we were cursed this season when my tickets arrived…in an envelope that opened up in the shape of a tombstone! Sadly, the Canes took the image to heart. But I keep hoping their luck will eventually change, 2009, 2010, whenever.
I don’t think we should wait. JR needs to go ahead and do something tommorow.

you're nuts if...
(1) you think eklund actually knows anything about anything. Dude’s a joke.
or
(2) you think this team will get rid of Eric Staal. THis was his third game back from what was clearly a major injury. It doesn’t happen automatically.
The team should, however, ignominiously waive Rod Brind’Amour. IN the last two seasons, he has played his way right out of the Hall of Fame and back into the AHL.

The Hotstove on HNIC
Regular second period intermission roundtable discussion held during the first game on Hockey Night in Canada (before our epic fail third period tonight) with host Ron MacClean, Mike Milbury, and Pierre LeBrun:
Ron MacLean: Okay, Carolina, going to be a coaching change?
Pierre LeBrun: I don’t think there’s going to be a coaching change, but there’s going to be some players waived in the next week or so. That Friday night collapse was just too much to take, and I think some guys might be exiting.
Here’s a link to it for him, in case he missed it.
Although my theory is that Pierre LeBrun got it straight from the GM’s mouth.
It's like JR is sitting there watching it happen in slow motion
why doesn;t he DO SOMETHING?

people who expect him to be Gretzky are a bit over the top I think.
by DidJussiThat? on Nov 28, 2009 10:49 PM EST up reply actions
I NEVER have said i expect him to be anything remotely close to Gretzky, HOWEVER I do expect him to earn his paycheck, which so far he has NOT done this season, injured or not. When Tim Gleason had tallied 1 more goal than our “franchise” player there is an issue.
"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
I’ve been on board your boat since day one… I would far rather have a Ruutu or a Gleason that says it how it is and shows that they care. It ain’t gonna happen, but we can wish!
by caniac4ever on Nov 28, 2009 10:47 PM EST up reply actions
It’s an unpopular opinion around Raleigh, that’s for sure. But I’ve felt that way for a long time and he hasn’t done much to make me change my mind.
it’s been discussed a fair amount around here and I agree – Timmy for emperor!!!
(though I think Ruuty would be just as good, but I’d rather just let him play and not burden him with that responsibility)
by Andrea's evil twin on Nov 28, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions
I think he should have an A at least. As much as I like our Wizard, Ruutu in my opinion is much more of a leader and game changer… something that is really lacking on this team…
by caniac4ever on Nov 28, 2009 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

by Andrea's evil twin on Nov 28, 2009 10:55 PM EST up reply actions
I’ve felt that way for several seasons. I don’t think a player should be captain just be he’s a “star”. I like caniac4ever’s suggestions for captain. I’d add Whitney to that list.
Where have you been all this time???? :) I’ve said that same sentence over and over and it’s like I"m speaking a different language.
none of us has any clue what the leadership is in the room
really, we’re all just running our mouths. We can criticize play on the ice, but saying someone does or does not have leadership potential is kind of like criticizing soldiers from your armchair. You have no idea unless you are there.
by DidJussiThat? on Nov 28, 2009 10:54 PM EST up reply actions
True, but we can see the leadership,or lack there of on the ice. When one player says " we had a good game but just needed a couple of good bounces" and another one says " we played like crap" I will very likely side with the 2nd guy every time.
by caniac4ever on Nov 28, 2009 10:56 PM EST up reply actions
If he (Staal) is a great leader in the room, then by all means give him the C. But being our All Star should not automatically make him Captain. That’s the point I try to make.
No, we’re not in the locker room, but we can deduce from what we hear in the interviews of these players. Ruutu calls out the team for not working hard, including himself, with heart and soul. He gives suggestions for what the team can do it get better.
In tonight’s interview of Staal he was asked if 2 big saves from Miller took the momentum from the Canes. His response was basically “yeah, Miller was huge”. I would expect a captain to says “Yes, the goalie was hot, but that’s where we as a team need to come together to find a way to get one past the goalie.”
I’ve been to as many of the events available to the fans to meet the players and have talked one on one with many of them, including Staal. He’s a very nice, polite guy, takes time with the fans. I like Staal, I’m just saying we have better candidates to be Captain.
Well put. It seems like to often he pushes the poor play off and says that it wasn’t that bad or we just need to try a bit harder. Was it MM or JF on 99.9 that said after the San Jose loss only Manny and Ruutu would even talk to the press? Obviously it sucks for us and much more so for the players, but to me that is when a leader HAS to step up and lead by example.
