Staal week-to-week, Jokinen centring first line

Staal is considered week-to-week and will be out at least throughout the weekend (games against Toronto and Columbus). More here.

No official call-up have been announced, but this is what official depth chart looks like:

Ruutu-Jokinen-Cole

Whitney-Cullen-LaRose

Samsonov-Brind'Amour-Walker

Kostopulous-Yelle-Sutter

I like the first line, it will be interesting to see what Jokinen can do on there. He has good chemistry with Ruutu, so it may work out. On the other hand, I do not like Sutter being on the fourth line. He has the only goals in the last two games, he should play on a scoring line. C'mon Mo, what else should he do to show you that he is better that 4th line?

Oh, well, at least we get to see what this team can do without Staal.

Dear Mo,

You were supposed to switch Sutter and Brind’Amour in the lines above. Yes?

And if Yelle can be scratched so Boychuk can play on Sutter’s line, that would be really sweet. Worth a shot, no?

Please respond at your earliest opportunity.

Respectfully,

A very disappointed fan

How was practice? I saw some tweets. What was your impression, compared to others you’ve seen this season?

they did a fair number of passing drills early (and they still look pretty sloppy) and some 1-on-1, 2-on-1 etc. breaks
then they played a little 5-on-5 at one end for a while (mo was saying all sorts of things, but I couldn’t hear it) which I’ve never seen them do before (maybe they do other times and I have missed it) but mo really did spend a lot of time talking to them today
also, they had the 4 lines in dif. colors (if I remember right – 1st in red, 2nd in white, 3rd in grey and the 4th in that lovely gold color that timmy refuses to wear)
both gleason and harrison were there (and now I know why harrison looked all sad and lonely when he left practice)

yeah, that would finally grab his attention :)

by MHodak on Nov 3, 2009 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

I would think so. It shows the level of fan support Sutter has accumulated.

by caniacgirl on Nov 3, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t get Sutter on the 4th line.

WTF is the point of having him up from the AHL only to fill in on 4th line duty?

Will #17s ego really be that bruised by a bump down to the 4th line?

by Iggy Reilly on Nov 3, 2009 5:43 PM EST reply actions

It would make me sick to think that they’re protecting Rod’s ego by not rewarding Sutter for his efforts and results. Surely they aren’t that sentimental? C’mon now. Rod’s a big boy and has been around this league a long while. Surely this isn’t an issue, given the circumstances? How bad does it have to get?

However, from those lines I’m afraid your right, Iggy.

Perhaps Sutter is on the 4th line because of the added protection it affords him. Walker is a tough guy, but Sammy is not exactly going to intimidate those around him. Teams are going to look to be extra physical on your top guy and right now that’s Sutter who despite having some serious moxy, isn’t really the next Chara (in terms of size).

I don’t know. That sounded lame even to me, but I’m searching for something.

by caniacgirl on Nov 3, 2009 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t buy it. I do not think that other teams consider him dangerous because he scored two goals in the row.

No point looking for excuses for Mo. He likes those around him and rewards loyalty and thus dislikes newcomers. That is my theory.

I told you it sounded lame to me. LOL

larose is on 2nd line for possible trade showcase that’s all – once more spots clear out you’ll see sutter and more minor league guys on higher lines

i agree,

i think larose is gone in two weeks or less, and eklund seems determined that everybody wants whitney but that JR wants to end him to calgary. What would we get from calgary?

by chrisj on Nov 3, 2009 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

No movement clause

An excerpt from Eklund’s blog entry earlier this evening:

On Whitney…Ever since reporting that the Flames have interest in Whitney last week it became apparent that this vital cog would be moved this season. More and more people have told me that everyone from LA to Dallas to Buffalo has expressed an interest. However at this point the best return (at least from a fit perspective) is definitely Calgary.

As always, remember this is Eklund we’re talking about here…so, fair warning.

However, Whitney has a no movement clause (can’t be traded, waived, or sent down). So, he’s a very involved participant on any potential deal.

And, Calgary would be compatible with his western Canadian roots.

   Just saying.

let’s see….Jokinen can handle the first line I think, and pretty well too. It’s good to see the Cullen-Whitney-LaRose line again, I just hope Mo keeps it together. Brind’Amour and Sutter should both be on the 3rd line and Walker should be with the bangers. I really just want to see some stability in the lines for awhile. seriously. Go ’Canes.
