Jay Harrison Sent to Albany

And so it begins.

The Carolina Hurricanes reassigned defenseman Jay Harrison to Albany today.  Harrison played 10 games for the Hurricanes, scoring a goal and registering two assists while averaging about 12 minutes of ice time per game.  He also accumulated 27 minutes of penalties.

The free agent acquisition cleared waivers this morning.

Tim Gleason has been cleared to play and will take his place.  For now, Tim Conboy will assume the backup role with the blueliners in case anyone gets hurt.

In practice today, Gleason was paired with Joe Corvo, Joni Pitkanen was still with Aaron Ward, and Andrew Alberts was matched with Niclas Wallin.

This was a no-brainer for sure. You can hardly pin all of the hurricanes problems on Harrison (I believe the majority of his penalty minutes are fighting majors)….. And he may be a good defensive defensman at some point…. but for now I think he will be well served as a leader for some of the up-and-coming players in Albany….

Paul Maurice certainly has a lot of faith and (for some reason) feels a lot of loyalty to Jay Harrison….. So I assume we will see him back at some point.

I don’t hate him by any stretch…. but this is probably a good place to start in regards to making roster changes….

you never know what happens in negotiation

JR felt something with harrison, who knows, but 9 in a row takes all bets off the table.

Surprised that Pits and A. Ward are still a pairing

Maybe Aaron will figure it out and listen to Joni when it comes to moving the puck on a break-out. They argued about this all the way to the bench, where T Rowe nodded his head in agreement with Joni and then spent a solid minute explaining what he wants to Aaron.
But, this is probably just indicative off the trouble the whole team has with getting on the same page.

GOOD

Maybe now our defense can be a little more NHL like. Harrison is a gutsy player but he honestly has no business playing in the NHL right now. THANK YOU JR!

by letsgocanes on Nov 3, 2009 4:05 PM EST reply actions

yeah…. he will be a good leader (IMO) in Albany…. And a good backup when we need somebody…. and at some time he will probably be a decent NHL defensive player…. right now just is not his time…

What about the stuff that’s worn out but you can’t bear to part with? I had a pair of red puma’s that I wore to every canes game from 2005-2007. There was no shoe left, but I couldn’t bear to throw them out. The night season was over I got shit-ass drunk and threw them out. I would never have done it sober…
And yes, it took probably about a half-bottle of rum to do…

by Andrea's evil twin on Nov 4, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

Oh yea! I still have this T-shirt from high school. It’s so worn you can see through it. I don’t think it can even be worn with out it falling apart.

I would like to see B Rodney.

by McCorkle on Nov 3, 2009 11:41 PM EST reply actions

I’d like to see the a few more changes. 530 game day, heavy frost, trying to decide if it’s a hot chocolate or coffee type of morning. Been reading some of the threads I’ve missed. I would expect that tonight will be like an importatnt practice. I think they will be working on chemistry and the simple things now that the band is back together. Then it will be the Leafs game where they will need to find themselves.

Not to say we don’t need 2 tonight and every night, but this train wreck isn’t going to explode and go on tear. I think the psychology puts the more important game being with the Leafs. Not sure what to think about these guys.

Dropping Harrison is pretty anticlimatic, I think somebody mentioned “no brainer”. I sure would like to see some smart moves, inspired play and cheaper beer.

Kind of ironic, there are soooooooooooooooooooooo many things wrong with this team, yet I can’t help hoping they do something.

My son doesn’t even watch the games. I asked him why and he said “’cause they suck”. I think that attitude will start hitting the box office soon. They start hitting the 12k a night mark and PK is gonna get that itch in the back of his throat only a 12ga can scratch.

I guess one nice thing is everbody likes coming here now, we hand out 2 points almost everynight….

A

by Paladin6 on Nov 4, 2009 5:53 AM EST reply actions

coffee for sure. Sending Harrison to Albany, although anticlimactic is a step in the right direction! I feel good about tonights game, things have to turn around at some point, right? I can’t type this early, NEED COFFEE!!

by jenniwa30 on Nov 4, 2009 6:05 AM EST up reply actions

Yup java it was. I can’t type for squat no matter what. I guess I agree it has to turn around, hell, can’t get much worse. I ‘m looking forward to tonights, too. I just set the bar low. I just want to see the guys put in the effort. Show me 60 minutes of trying and I’m a happy camper.

You are still alive – is your grocery store in Maine or something?

by Andrea's evil twin on Nov 4, 2009 8:05 AM EST up reply actions

Nah, only about 20 minutes. It is kind of an all day event, though. Putting stuff away, rotating things forward and usually a good dinner. Was a whumpin’ slab of salmon this time. Been at this mountain life thing a good spell now. It’s kind of nice to take a day and be slow, stock the freezer and shelves. Today is going to be building a wall and chopping firewood. Actually everyday is chopping firewood. It’s thera-don’tgetfat-putic. Between that and raking gravel and dirt to maintain the driveway, I usually come into the holidays in fair shape. Got a turkey picked out and runnin’ around for T-giving. See if the boy can hit it, if not I got him, but hoping that will become our tradition for T-giving. Kinda funny, I’ll cokk for 8 and it’s only me and him. I’ll be about leftover’d out after that.

On the other note the big woodstove is in and is a mean mutha. I spend every night stripped down to my skivvy’s watching hockey with the front door open. This thing could heat 3000 sq ft, so in my few hundred I can almost catch a tan next to it.

Oh well off to be productive.

God, remember when 12k a game was a good attendance goal for us?!?!? Can you imagine if we start drawing 8-10k per game again. JR will probably start rumors about moving the team again to scare people into coming.

N&O story today had canes players saying that maybe it’s good that Staal is out for a while. I can’t agree more; watch Cullen and Jokinen thrive with more ice time.

I’m calling ’Canes win tonight 4-2 with an empty netter.
