Canes recall Zach Boychuk
The Carolina Hurricanes announced this morning that they have recalled forward Zach Boychuk from the Albany River Rats. Boychuk was one of the final players cut from training camp and impressed coaches with his speed and hustle this past fall. The forward has 4 goals and 5 assists in 12 games so far for the Rats.
The team is also reporting that Ray Whitney has an upper body injury and is likely to miss a few games. Boychuk will fill in for Whitney in the Hurricanes lineup this weekend. Tuomo Ruutu also missed practice this morning, but his injury is not expected to be as serious. Both Whitney and Ruutu will undergo testing and treatment later today.

Great, now Ray is truly un-tradeable. Good to see Zack is coming up to play 5 or 6 min a night.

Boychuk = Whitney
All through the training camp practice sessions, it was very notable to me just how much Boychuk looks like Whitney on the ice.
Same body type, size, stance, and even some movements were similar.
Even Whitney has acknowledged (wish I could cite the source here of where I read it) that Boychuk is him.
Here’s hoping.
Give them time...
….Mo can crush any offensive player, just give him time. In a few months, he may not be able to hit the net, but he will damn well know that bed better get to the blue line if a d man is at the top of the circle or below.

Mo is about learn that JR, his friend, is a very unhappy man. Mo better get used to some new rules. These cretins totaly boned and missed the proper opportunity to bring these kids up in a good manner. The weight of saving face and the franchise will fall on these very young shoulders. They weren’t made for it and didn’t need to happen. The weight should be placed upon the vets and Staal in particular.
Boychuck will want it, but I don’t think he’s ready. Sutter can and has done well, but it’s alot to ask of Staal, let alone Sutter.
Can we get the other Zac? What about Bowman?

Hell it’s just getting exciting. Hang on tight, I think this ride is still clanking up the first drop, the real big shit is coming…
A
suck it up
I think its going to be good for us. At least give some new face an opportunity to fight for a spot and for management to determine who they will trade amongst the vets.

More questions:
Is the 10 game clock ticking on having to keep any of these guys?
The trade mill has to be grinding, any word out of anybody rumor wise?
Does anybody expect that Sutter and Boychuck’s first game and no Staal has even a remote chance at a win against a hungry Kessel?
These rookies need a couple games before the bees get out of their head. The locker room will now look at them as outsider that want to take a job. That’s a sharp double edged sword there my friends. This is not the way to bring up or develope rookies.
A
LOL, Paladin
After complaining for weeks/months about how we need to get these guys up from Albany, your dream is fulfilled and now you’re complaining about the method?
Too funny!

Not so much bitching as pointing out how yet again they do the inevitable the hard way.
MAke me GM for a week and were at least playing 60 minutes..

Sorry Paladin. I didn’t mean it as criticism – it’s just that your expectations seem so high given the circumstances (like you think anyone planned this season to go this way?). It’s more that with the unbelievable chaos happening in the Canes organization, it’s hard to expect anything to happen properly or in any way “fair”.
These kids have already been through a lot to get to where they are at a very young age. They aren’t even old enough to interpret the situation like you and I do (tho maybe that’s stretching it for Sutter). For them it’s hockey in the NHL, pretty simple. A good thing all around for them.
It sucks to fall so far from where we thought we’d be in September, but heck, like you said to Jen, it’s also kind of exciting and terribly entertaining. I got over any expectations for the season after the loss to St Louis a week ago when Cam misplayed the puck so badly and Staal looked so fragile.
Now, for me, today, it’s just an interesting “reality show” about my favorite team, my favorite athlete-personalities, my favorite sport. My job or my health isn’t on the line. It’s sports – lots of passion and history, but with no real consequences for anyone except the players and employees.
Not like they’re shutting down Canes Country if we finish 30th. (they won’t, will they, Harwood?) That would be something to whine about.

Y’know, if there’s one thing we have seen here at CC the last month is that we all grieve differently. (thinking of the pop psych theory of : denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance).
And there’s nothing wrong with that. This experiencee would make an interesting case study for a college “group psychology” seminar.

Shouldn't take long, Elsker.
I believe I got to “acceptance” after the game last night, or mayber the injuries to Ru and Whitney and Boychuk’s imminent arrival were the kicker – though I’ve known for a week that the summer’s expectations were dead and gone.
I’m thinking Rutherford is now at “Bargaining”. Mo is now up to “Depression” (from the sounds of his post-game comments last night).
I’m thinking we need the whole staff and roster to get to “Acceptance” and only then can we start over and stop the losing streak.
Never have I seen such a professional sports team collapse like the Canes’ season so far (without an injury like Tom Brady’s knee destroying the Pats). Does anyone else have a similar experience that we can reference to compare?

“Dead and gone”??
Ha!!
Dead wrong!
Never had a prayer, proof is in the pudding. The remaining Normandy Vets may still have the heart but storming beaches is over. This team is over. JR better pull his head out or find a job back in Detroit. I think he could be replaced easier than Mo. Though the wisdom seems to be lacking on that, too.
Nope, they blew it from the get go. Not a train wreck, failure to launch..
A
I think we agree. But it took me 10-12 games to concede to such defeatism. It’s official: This is the bottom. I expect we’ll be here awhile. Might as well enjoy it.

Well it wasn’t such an epic collapse, but last season Clemson football was supposed to really go places. We had all of our big starters returning; there was even talk of a national championship-maybe there are football gods too. We were highly ranked before the season started, lost 4 of the first 7 (including the very first game of the season) due to (IMO) poor choices by the coaching staff, got a starting QB benched, a head coach fired and the QB publicly calling out the coach post-firing. It was a dark time here.
BUT, we managed to pull things together once the new coach took over, finished 7-5, beat our hated in-state rival at home and got a Bowl bid. So, I can’t completely give up hope that something good will happen in Raleigh.
Guess I might have had a head start, since (kinda hate to admit it) I had said out loud to elskling as the season began that I hated to wish bad things upon the team, but this would actually be a very good year to miss the playoffs, cash in on some draft picks/prospects via FA trades, and bring the kids up around mid-year or so for a jumpstart on next year and beyond.
Of course, I had no idea that we would crash like we have so far and that speculation over this year’s draft would enter the picture.
I think I’m still firmly planted in depression. Although I’m not beyond begging. Does that count as bargaining?
I noticed.

BTW, if I recall I said that at the correct point of bringing them up during preseason.
Trial by fire. ain’t trial under fire…

I think you severely overestimate Phil Kessel. This is more a trial for the D than the offensive forwards. The guy aint known for his back check, I’ll tell you that.
Probably that and a vast underestimation of the Canes…
I think the Leafs are gonna kick the shit out of the Canes to complete the fall. They are also looking like they are showing signs of life.
Alas, maybe one day we will get there.

You guys are too funny.
OH THE DRAMA!!! Whitney’s hurt, Boychuk is the next in line. This team has obvious problems, for starters, you’ll never win unless you score ONE goal.Regardless, your’e all thinking too much, and you almost drug me into it.
So…. Doesn’t someone have to go on IR in order for Boychuck to be up?

better draft position and the opportunity to move players on expiring deals. But I didn’t say I expected a bad season. I said a bad season could be good in the long run b/c their are lots of assets that could be moved at the deadline.

Making Lemonade out of Lemons
The truth is that the Hurricanes team long-term needs a game changer superstar to go along with Staal. It is too soon to predict that Sutter, Boychuk, Bowman, and/or Dalpe will be elite players of the caliber of Staal; but they have enormous potential and should be major contributors to the team for years to come. To obtain a game-changer player, the Hurricanes would have to endure an horrific year and get a top three or top four pick because they can’t get into bidding wars for a Kessel or Heatley. It is awful to be watching this meltdown but Cory is correct in my view that the long-term impact of the terrible year will be a stronger team in the long-run. Don’t misunderstand me, however, I would much prefer to see another deep run into the playoffs; but given where the team is playing, a top three pick seems much more likely than getting into the playoffs this year.
Cory, I appreciate your humility and can understand why you wouldn’t want to be labeled a prophet. Just kidding!
I will take credit for picking Boston ahead of Montreal last season :D

Rumor from Ekllund
“I am hearing that Montreal is “considering a serious offer for the Kostitsyn brothers.” I am also hearing that the Carolina Hurricanes may be the leading candidate with Whitney possibly going the other way."
i feel like this is the opposite of what we need,
we need less players on the roster, not more, a whitney for the kostitsyns would be nice, but not the best option for this team, unless a lot more guys were moving.
Totally agree. We don’t need a player-for-player trade. We need a dump-salary-for-picks/prospects-and-open-a-roster-spot trade.
Have we not already dealt with one headcase Russian, now we want to add two more? This would be a really really bad idea.
by Douchebag St John on Nov 5, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions
That’s good, b/c usually the opposite of what Eklund says is what happens.

Not sure this is the best move for us to make
I’ve always heard Sergei (the younger of the two) has serious attitude issues.
It’s just Eklund. I wouldn’t be too worried.
He’s just increasing his website traffic stirring the pot.
I was just at their practice this morning and whitney did not practice though after it was over i went to grab something to eat across the street from the rink and he walked in. So its good to know that he is still exercising with the team if not skating.

hopefully we make it throught his season without killing each other
this season will be a learning season and we can take advantage of top draft picks season 2 (of mo’s tenure) and then make playoffs next season and the 3rd season? is this doable? i feel bad if this was out of mo’s control or we made the wrong picks in terms of new players. it sucks. maybe jim is to blame? who knows.
JR's youth movement is upon us !
So lets break it down okay , by grades are far as resignings and trades by JR in the offseason.

here's to hoping
that Mo actually trusts Boychuk. it’s sad to see such great talents in Sutter and Boychuk being potentially wasted playing 10 mins a night.
it seems Mo doesn’t like the idea of the younger guys being useful?
I have a lot of hope for Boychuk. here’s to hoping tomorrow night won’t be the start of a wasted call up.
He’s supposedly all smiles (no kidding!) from the same source.

I agree with this observation from my limited time watching Bowman in training camp practices.
Best pure shot the Canes have ever owned, at least in my decade of experience with them.
Just wish Bowman looked like he would have the shutzpah to hang with the big boys. He looks like the bantam stickboy whenever he’s amongst the regulars:

or

I agree, on the ice, he stands out for both his skating and his stick. He just looks so vulnerable.

Heal the injured ones.....
this mach crap when there is still 5/6 of the season left is BS.
My take on Staal? He was hurt and his staying only hurt the team even more. I’m not glad he hurt himself even more but I am glad he’s healing up.
When all else fails, read the instruction manual.
let them rest for gods sake, if they are hurt at all they are not going to be much help and why risk worsening the injuries???
Chip is simply reporting what Mo is telling him.
Which is indicative to me that the same root problem that we have with Mo is still rampant.
He seemingly desperately wants to play even injured vets over new talent, even with JR’s shot across the bow in his press release yesterday that he expected top-nine minutes for both Sutter and Boychuk.
So all of this “game time decision” stuff just says to me “I gotta talk with JR one more time about all of this before I swallow starting these kids”.
JR's " shot acrros the bow " is an empty threat....
….and Mo knows it. He has been in this extended family long enough to know that PK is not going to pay for three coaches. Mo knows he can operate with impunity here and therefore he is going to.
I asked this question to C Leaguer at the beginning of the year , of course thinking the project would not start until next year:
" Are we sure that Mo is the right coach for a rebuilding project ? " I believe his misuse, dare I say UN-use of Sutter and Staal in his rookie season have proven that the answer is emphatically NO!
In fact the results, or lack thereof, both here and in Toronto have proven that the only thing Mo is truly good at is Deconstruction Projects.

Interesting quote from Boychuk:
“Maurice took me and said, ’Don’t be worried about making the other veterans happy. You’ve got to put the pucks to the net.’ I’m a young guy and don’t have a lot of experience. I have to bring hard work and a lot of youthful energy.”
Don’t worry about upsetting the veterans eh? Yeah I guess seeing two 20 year olds come in and do your job ten times better than you are could sting a little.
Translation :
" You will only be playing for about 10min, including the PK time you may rack up, so don’t worry about the vets, there is no chance you will be able to upset them. From what I have seen, you would not have much to worry about anyway, because they don’t seem to really care about anything but collecting a paycheck right now. "
