Video of Cam Ward's injury

Star-divide

In case you didn't catch the game last night between the Hurricanes and the Columbus Blue Jackets, and didn't see the collision between Rick Nash's skate and Cam Ward's upper leg, here you can see exactly what happened. If, like me, you love the Hurricanes, this is your 3 minutes from hell.

You can read what you want into Cam's body language as they get him off the ice and down to the locker room.

What exactly did the Canes' do to deserve this season? This is no longer just about laziness, penalties, age or lack of talent. The ongoing displays of "bad luck", they've experienced  goes beyond anything I've ever seen in a sports franchise.

A couple personal observations posted overnight from Canes' media: Chip Alexander and Brian LeBlanc

I have to say that I am still impressed by the closeness of this team. Watching Corvo try to help Cam up and then having Sammy come over to do the same thing really speaks volumes about the quality of character we have on this team. We sure are lucky.

Watching again I could see how Jussi and Ruu tried to defend against Nash on the play. Nash was chargin full steam for the goal, and pushed his way past Jussi (who in hindsight may wish he had hooked him for a 2-minute minor). Then Jussi pushed him from behind in the crease while Ruu’s stick tripped Nash, on the way through. Ruu was clearly devastated (like he wasn’t already emotionally fragile about hockey being dangerous).

One other, and somewhat more lurid, observation: from the overhead view it looks like Cam was actually compressing his thighs together in classic butterfly just as Nash’s skate was trapped between the pads. So not only was Nash’s skate blade pushing into Cam’s unprotected leg, but Cam’s leg motion was pushing back – like a head-on collision doubling the force. You couldn’t plan anything worse. (Is there any other part of the goalie’s body left this unprotected?)

So I'm guessing this would be "bottom"?

If they aren’t wearing a neck guard, it’s the neck for sure.

HM, that wasn’t Ruuty’s stick that tripped Nash on the way through, it was Gleason’s. Ruuty’s off a ways from the play, to the left of the video (Cam’s right).

I didn’t notice that watching the video above, but saw when I tuned in to the coverage just now on NHLN on the big screen.

BTW thanks for the heads up on the NHLN OTF interview with Luke… I tuned in but you pretty much hit all the highlights with your recap.

Thanks for that. I was trying to figure out what happened in more detail (something about reducing it to facts makes it less scary). Gleason, eh? No wonder he was on a mission in the 3rd. Nothing like a front seat to tragedy to get the adreneline going.

What did you think of the injury when you saw the video LTD? Caniacgirl said it wasn’t as bad as she expected from the why we were all talking. I hate the part where he gets carried awkwardly in full gear down the hallway the most.

So I'm guessing this would be "bottom"?

Well, I would kind of say the same thing, I think it was built up so much that by the time I actually made myself look at it, it wasn’t quite as bad as I expected. I think if I’d seen it live first on TV instead of on the video it would have affected me more.

I have terrible eyesight so not to get gross but it was hard for me to see the blood on the video, although again it was much clearer and much more sobering seeing the trail of blood on a big screen TV.

But getting him through the gate and down the hallway with all his gear and in his obviously compromised position really put the lump in my throat.

He’s one of my favorite players in all of sports, and it was interesting that CanesVision used “reverence” in their ad because that’s a word I’ve used myself, a lot, to describe my feelings toward him.

It’s been a really tough day.

What did it for me were two things actually-
1) Watching Corvo come over and try to lift Cam up but Cam physically couldn’t do it.
2)Watching them try to get him through the tunnel

Somehow the blood didn’t bother me very much (it generally doesn’t). It was more watching someone who never lets on that he’s hurting struggle so much and clearly be in so much pain that got me. Plus anytime a goalie gets hurt it’s even worse because they are so “big” but somehow manage to look so small in that moment.
