Hurricanes to sign goaltender?

Per Chip Alexander's twitter page:

Hurricanes are expected to sign a goaltender. Rutherford did not name any names but a best guess could be Manny Legace.

Cam Ward could be sidelined for a month, GM Jim Rutherford said this afternoon. Not considered a season-ending injury. from web

Legace is now playing with the Chicago Wolves (AHL).

That's my best guess, not Rutherford's.

This is a slap in the face to Mike Murphy and especially Justin Peters in some ways - but a steady veteran netminder couldn't hurt the team.  What is there to lose?

And uhhh, would Eddie Belfour consider leaving the Stars' coaching system?  Maybe all the players need is a good drinkin' buddy.

Looks like Chip has been reading message boards again.

Justin Peters will never be an NHL starter I don’t think, and Mike Murphy is barely ready for the AHL (has been a bit shaky), so it would definitely not be the right time to call him up here.

I think the solution is either alternating Leighton and Peters until one of them gets hot or going ahead and picking up a guy like Legace or Fernandez.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Bringing Legace in sounds about right, wasn’t he drafted by the whalers?

Ironicly, he is my starting goalie in NHL2009 (the game I have never picked up till this season, I needed a hockey win fix)

What the Heck ?

Manny Legace ? Come on speak of a washed up piece of garbage. Wasn’t this guy so bad that he was dumped by the Blues a season or so ago ? Trade Leighton and LaRose for something decent at the goaltender postion and then bring up Murphy and let he start getting used to the NHL level of play. Peters is nothing great either and he is nothing but Leighton all over again.

Manny Legace why am I not surprised, why not give the young guns a chance to stay and play. By not bring up Murphy or keeping Boychuk up here full time you are just killing this franchises a little more with each game and loss this season.

Simply a rebuilding year for sure and Legace good god almighty you have to be joking.

I definitely would not sign a goalie, not because I want to see our team fail, but because you need to how some faith in what you have.
I would not write off Justin Peters. Goalies take longer, like defensemen, to develop. He’s 23 years old, has pro-style size and has come to each of the last 3 training camps as the most physically fit player aside from Rod the Bod. Also, I wouldn’t exactly say he has been well supported by his defense or the team as a whole in front of him last year in Albany and the year before he played only 11 games. Aside from a hand full of top notch goalie prospects, (i.e. Fleury, Mason, Quick, and C. Ward), goalies traditionally don’t succeed or aren’t ready to debut in the NHL until their mid-20’s.

Secondly, yes Leighton has been a major disappointment since he has been with the Canes, but what goalie is successful largely successful playing once every 20 games knowing your coach has no faith in you. Let’s not forget the guy won the AHL goalie of the year award 2 years ago. Yea it’s the A, but if we’re judging our prospects based on their productivity there, you can’t disregard a goalie’s stats and successes there.

Mike Murphy is 20 years old and although he has shown flashes of brilliance in the minors, he has generally been inconsistent. Bringing him up and throwing him to the wolves would be foolish and a huge blow to his confidence. Goalie’s success is all about self confidence, especially in young goalies. If Cam Ward is getting shelled as he is after several years in the NHL, I can’t image this would help the development of Murphy. Also, jumping from the Major Junior to the NHL is hard enough as it is, as seen by only I think 5 players making the jump from the last draft class.

Legace keep the back up job in STL and couldn’t win a back up job in ATL. How would bringing him in help us win or at least compete? I say bring up Peters and have him battle with Leighton for playing time. He has paid his dues in the AHL and played well. Let our prospects develop in Albany unless you’re going to give them significant minutes in Carolina, i.e. Boychuk would not be getting them once Whitney returns.
