Joe Corvo out 8 to 12 Weeks
The Carolina Hurricanes placed Joe Corvo on the injured reserve list today after finding out that he will be out between 8 to 12 weeks recovering from a deep laceration to his right calf.
For more information, check out the team's release.
In other news, Patrick Dwyer was sent back to Albany. Scott Walker or Chad LaRose might be ready to return to action.

Based on my trusty little calculator, that works out to between 24 and 34 games, or at the pace with which he eats minutes, 612 to 867 minutes off the ice. And 12 weeks puts us right at the two-week Olympic break. It’s conceivable he could be out until March.
Poor Joe.

So Pits moves up to first line with Timmy? Then Wallin and Rodney? AWard and Albe? Or is there more change coming this week….

beyond ridiculous.
at least he went out with a goal. Can someone do an injury chart list of Hurricanes players.
I think its time to start taking bets on who gets injured each game.
Cullen, Whitney, Jussi or Sutter….maybe Tommy K (because Cole, Staal, Gleason, Pits, Walker, Ruutu, Rosey, Yelle, and CWard have already done their time) And we’d never be lucky enough to have AWard or Roddy get hurt.

I almost hate to admit, but man a long term injury to Rod would be a great help to this team….
Cruel to say, but there it is.
I was wondering if Leights didn’t get the start last night to show case him for a trade? Didn’t work out real weel if so. Corvo was trade fodder now he may not be. JR’s ulcer must be about the size of the Grand Canyon by now.
I would expect at least a salary dump move or two this week. Maybe a big trade involved. Should be interesting. If JR does nothing, that will speak volumes to me. He not only worked himself into a corner, but doesn’t have the stones to take another shot at righting the ship and moving on to the future. Pretty pathetic.
So we taking bets on whetehr Staal get’s hurt at the olympics?

He’d have to get named to the squad first. That’s the bigger “IF” in my mind.
You may be right on the money there. If he doesn’t make it, does that put him in hissy fit tantrum mode then for the rest of the season?

Is the sky blue? Is the grass green?
Sorry that was rude. It may actually be a motivational tool for him and a wake up call that he doesn’t get stuff just because of his name.
darren drager said CBJ is looking for a D man
i hope rutherford is on the phone offering up A ward for a pick or a low end prospect.
reposting this in light of the title of this thread seems odd.
but, since the D corps is changing around anyway
might as well switch it up a bit
Deadline
The deadline for trades in the NHL is March 3rd. That’s 13 weeks and 1 day from today. For the sake of this team Corvo needs to be healthy after 8 weeks so he can get some playing time in before the Olympic break and this team can salvage a pick out of him. It’s likely a second rounder now, but that’s better than nothing.
5 seconds left.
Do you believe in miracles?
YES!!
Yeah this is unfortunate. He may not be amazing but he was looking to be one of the top rental defensemen at the deadline behind Scott Niedermayer. Might have gotten a late first rounder or decent prospect but that might be lost unless he can come back sooner.
However if I were Corvo, I’d certainly want to come back in time to show off and be traded to a Cup contending team. What will earn him a bigger payday come UFA time, finishing as a top 2 Dman on the last place team in the league or a deep playoff run? I’d be willing to guess why he was trying to show off his moves last night with that pretty goal.
never underestimate what teams will pay for a gifted right-handed shot on defense. Corvo, IMO, is the team’s most valuable property among the pending UFAs.
by Cory Lavalette on Dec 1, 2009 12:00 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah but he will be less desirable if he is just coming back from injury right at the deadline. Needs a good 6-8 games under his belt to show he’s up to game speed before the deadline to get his original value.
If he goes to a real contender, not someone just looking to make the playoffs, that won’t matter, IMO. Teams know what he’s capable of. He could take the rest of the regular season to round into form for the playoffs.

Likely correct. The good news out of the injury is two fold:
1) From all indications it appears to just be a muscle cut and not a tendon.
2) He should be at 100% come the Olympic break/deadline, so for many teams he will be a fresh player, not one dealing with nagging injuries from the entire season.
I’d still like to get him in a game or two just to show other teams that he’s close to game ready.

Do you believe in miracles?
YES!!
I hope you're right, but I'm kinda curious
Why do you think it’s “only” muscle, not tendon/ligament?
Seems like a really long time to be out (compared to Cam’s 4-5 weeks) and they described it this morning as requiring emergency surgery last night, not “stitches”. Corvo is in fantastic shape but, I’m wondering since they project he’ll be taking off 2-3 months, this may be similar to an ACL type recovery (or William’s achilles injury which sidelined him 3 months). I’m no expert, but it sounds to that more than muscle needs mending.

This will probably help JR if he does decide to deal Corvo. For being on a last place team that gives up the most goals and scores the least, his numbers look pretty good currently. If things continue down this same dark road, his numbers would have suffered and other teams could use them against JR.
Corvo is 8th in the league in ice time, 2nd in PPG and 4th in SOG among D-men. Would be on pace for a 40 point season and has been involved in 20% of the goals his team has scored. You can sell him as a PP specialist and a mintutes eater. Contenders should be drooling over these stats if and when the time comes. Some people on here think he’s no good though, interesting.
What awful luck, I never had hope that we’d fight back and make the playoffs but this right here makes me just believe we have the first overall pick on lock. Every other team in the league is pulling away from us (even the Leafs) and there is just no end in sight to our bad luck.
Not to mention the damage on Corvo’s trade values this does, that sucks probably most of all seeing as this season is over.
I really wouldn’t be surprised if we picked up a low-end D-man in a small trade here this week while unloading a forward. We need it, if Pitkanen gets hurt again are we SERIOUSLY going to have a top 4 defense of Gleason, Alberts, Aaron Ward, and Wallin? If that’s the case they might as well just rest Cam the rest of the season, why throw him to that pack of wolves.
Insanity. I guess we’ll see Rodney or McBain here Thursday/Friday?
Oh, and was Cole playing defense last night? I thought saw him back there after Gleason went out.
Cole had some PP point time during the Ovechkin major. He’s done that before, at least as far back as the ’06 Olympic team under Lavi.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
tried to post this as a fanpost, but my computer wouldnt let me…..so if someone wants to grab this and put it there thanks, if not oh well!
With all this talk about change, and what should we do, and righting the ship, at what point do we not want to turn this season around? Its pretty clear that the playoffs are outta the question. If not a draft pick, then what are we playing for? Does anyone see a need to play great for the last 50 games or so just to wind up with the 12th pick? I would never suggest tanking, but maybe just “not fixing”. What happens if we do get a new coach and go on a 9 game win streak? We’d still be 3 games under .500! Am I the only one that sincerely hopes we end up with the #1 overall? Especially with next year being a rebuilding year, and all the youth coming up, and with all the salaries going bye-bye, it sure would be nice to have a Taylor Hall thats NHL ready and can step in and produce for entry level pay. Opinions?
Even if we finish last it doesn’t guarantee we get first pick. With the Canes luck I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Yeah last place team has 48.2% chance get the first overall. I don’t think we will have to try that hard to lose, with Corvo out for 8-12 weeks and Ward/Wallin/Alberts/Rats absorbing his 20+ minutes a night I don’t think our bad defense is going to get much better.
In any case Hall isn’t even rated the #1 prospect according to the last reports (Tyler Seguin was). Thankfully the top 3 Offensive prospects (Hall, Seguin, and Kabanov) are very skilled snipers/playmakers and all look ready to play at the NHL level.
What prospects report are you referring to? Thanks.

This season is already over. Any moves now have to be made with two things in mind-keeping the fans interested, and getting maximum value for players we would let go the ufa route. Unfortunately the best way to do the latter, which is the best longterm for the team, will not be nearly as aggressive as the former. The fans need to realize that this is not a team that needs to try everything in the book to get better this year, and that patience will be well rewarded (I hope) in the years to come. Let the season play out, Support the team. Let the Karmanos decide where to start making changes in the off season.
Also, could people stop making silly comments about trading players that aren’t producing? If the player is not doing well in most cases on our team he is not worth his salary to us or anyone else. A couple players could be traded on reputation, but neither of those two will be. Everyone else needs to show well to be trade bait. Cole, AWard, etc. are not doing enough work for another GM to want them, no matter how little the return.
Is that his blood on the dasher there?

More likely just melted ice shavings from a change on-the-fly.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
I don’t think so. I think it’s water.
I took some pictures from across the ice, and zooming in it looks like his sock was soaked in a couple of areas, and not to be gross, but I don’t think blood spattered. Then again I’m not CSI material.
What I can tell from my shots is that the sock looks torn at the top of the white stripe, and where he’s holding his calf is in the red area above the stripes.

More than likely it’s melted ice. I remember one time when I played in high school, trying to make a quick jump over the boards to get a line change in. It was pretty wet and my hand slipped and I went face first into the bench………….sucked..
Satan is just a coping mechanism for monotheists.
If anyone is interested in sending Joe a get well message, you can do so here.
They will hand deliver it to him before Christmas. For anyone wondering, Cam really appreciated his get well messages.
VERY SAD NEWS
Joe… forget everything and get better. Team needs you (better healthy!) and Fans love you (no conditions :) )
All above is my personal opinion.
Thanks,
Andy_S
More than likely we have seen Joe Corvo play his last game as a Cane that comes close to meaning something.
I have already given up hope at the playoffs, but come March, barring a ridiculous run, they will definitely be out of things.
You weren’t my fave, you weren’t hated by me, best of luck Corvo wherever you land. (Hopefully during the season so we get a return from it.)
I still think Corvo will resign with the Canes unless he expects a big raise.
A TRUE CANIAC......YES I AM........
I think theres a good chance he resigns if JR is interested. Ive said it before and will say it again, I dont think Corvo is in it just for the money. I think he would take less to be on a team and in a community he is comfortable with after his previous episode in Ottawa. Usually the teams that would drastically overpay for a player with his abilities are in big markets where players can fall prey to the fans and media, something he probably wants to avoid.
I agree with you. Who knows what the situation will be like here at the end of the season, but I think when he becomes a UFA he’ll be very circumspect (to the extent he’s able) about where he decides to play next.

Let’s keep the topic to hockey, whether or not he is circumspected is none of our business, and you will do well to dwell on something less personal! =) (in case the smiley is not enough, I was in fact joking).

I really love the chance to use that word.

i mean, look at the minutes hes getting, thre are reasons why its more the pits, but it is still odd to see him minutes wise ahead of a 6mil a year defender
Pitkanen makes $4M/yr, not 6.
And Corvo gets under a minute more per game than Pitkanen, which can be explained by Corvo getting increased ice time whenever Pitkanen is out. Note that Pitkanen played over 33 minutes last night with Corvo out.
Pitkanen averaged more ice time than Corvo last season, FWIW.
Wow, out of the frying pan and into the blast furnace
When the team plays well, they hit a hot goalie.
There are times they can’t buy a goal.
They still have Mo.
When will they get a break?
When all else fails, read the instruction manual.
