News from Edwards Mill Road

Canes expect Ward back Dec. 9 - WRALSportsFan.com
Carolina had originally hoped to get their No. 1 goalie back for Saturday's game with Vancouver. Now it looks like next Wednesday night in New Jersey - the Devils and of course, Martin Brodeur.

Changes Easier Said Than Done - Carolina Hurricanes - Blog

"It’s hard to accelerate [change] because you really can’t move contracts out," said Rutherford. "If we could, we would probably move a handful of guys out today and move the younger guys in, even if they weren’t ready, and start that process."  Wow. I wonder how the Canes' over-30 set feels now?

Ovie-saturation

Ovechkin suspended two games for knee-to-knee hit :  Washington Capitals' forward Alexander Ovechkin has been suspended two games after his knee-on-knee hit with Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Tim Gleason. It was Ovechkin's second game misconduct in the last three games. Also this: Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average salary, Ovechkin will forfeit $98,844.16. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Ovechkin gets 2 game suspension; next time, 'repeat offender’ - Puck Daddy  From the offender: "I regret that this has happened. I'm glad that Tim wasn't injured because I never ever want to see anyone get hurt. I am disappointed to miss these games and I can't wait to get back on the ice next week to help my team." I do appreciate those first 2 words. Maybe it'll save you some hurt on December 11th.

UPDATED: This link was broken earlier but here's the Video from TSN on the suspension of the league's MVP, with both Ovechkin and Boudreau on camera describing the incident and the future. Entitled "Over the Edge?" Not the first time - love him or hate him. Check it out.

Coach calls Ovechkin 'reckless'; Caps star defends 'risky' style - Puck Daddy - (earlier this afternoon)

After his latest incident, will Alex Ovechkin be forced to alter his style of play? - ESPN   Part of Alex Ovechkin's charm has been his willingness to go through people as opposed to around them. But given his latest hit, has the Caps star gone too far? (Scott Burnside)

UPDATE #2  This tonight from ESPN.com's Scott Burnside following the suspension decision, with interesting embedded video commentary of Barry Melrose (taped prior to the league's announcement). Melrose loves Ovie, but thinks now it would be appropriate for him to think a moment before lining up his next hit. He also stated flat-out that if the situation was reversed, and Gleason had done the same thing to Ovechkin, our D-man would have received a full 5 games to sit in the corner and think about it.

Alex Ovechkin OK, says he won’t change his ’risky’ ways - BostonHerald.com ARLINGTON, Va. — Alex Ovechkin’s right knee doesn’t seem to be the issue. He says it’s just sore. The concern is that he’s now been tossed out of two games in less than a week, and his coach is suggesting that maybe it’s time for the league’s two-time reigning...

And wuddya know about Joe?

Rutherford: Joe Corvo Difficult to Replace - Carolina Hurricanes - Blog "You don’t completely replace him," said General Manager Jim Rutherford. "We’ve struggled and a lot of guys have not played up to their potential, but he’s one guy that has played very well for us. He plays a lot of minutes, he does a lot of good things and he’s a real good player. We’re going to miss a good player at a time when we need every player we can get.".

Burlington’s Tom Barrasso to be inducted into U.S. hockey hall tonight - BostonHerald.com.by Chip Alexander RALEIGH, N.C. — As a kid growing up outside Boston, Tom Barrasso never dreamed of slugging homers for the Red Sox or draining jumpers for the Celtics. While I appreciate the apology, to me it would have carried more weight if a) it had been offered prior to getting suspended and b) came out of a conversation with the media, not a canned team issued press release.

But I guess beggars can’t be choosers.

Good work as always HM! You had a lot to keep up with today.

So Who are the "Handful of Players" Jim Rutherford Would Like to Move

Who are the handful of players Jim Rutherford wants to move if he can? If I were Jim Rutherford, this list would be my candidates for

1. Aaron Ward (self-evident why);

2. LaRose (great young man but doesn’t seem to fit within Maurice’s/Francis’ way of playing hockey);

3. Wallin (too foot slow and expensive for what he brings to the table);

4. Samsonov (great talent, but seems to be struggling to find his identify under Maurice’s.Francis’ system. If I were King I’d keep him b/c I would think I could surely get his confidence back);

5. Walker (toughest player pound per pound in the NHL; but with age, his injuries are a major concern);

6. Leighton (doesn’t have confidence of his coaches);

7. Conboy (he has great attitude and toughness. If I were King, I’d use him as a defenseman);

8. Michael Ryan (not really talented enough at any one area to play at the NHL level);

9. Yelle (much improved over the past five games, but age is an issue)

10. Rod Brind’Amour (if it were feasible; but I doubt it is; he needs to retire and let the young players lead)

by yeaus on Dec 2, 2009 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

I know alllll about JJ. I’m from NC and I live in LA so I get both sides of the story and get to see him play on a regular basis. He has boatloads of skill but until he learns to pick his spots better and stops trying to be the star player like he was in college, he’s going to leave his team susceptible to counter attacks. I’m happy the ’Canes have Gleason (also probably a future captain and team USA Olympian).

Besides, here are Rutherford’s comments on Timmy in the “Irreplaceable Corvo” piece Branecky wrote (linked above)

"When things are so bad, you look for positive things," said Rutherford, whose team is now on a five-game losing skid. "I can’t speak enough about his character. There’s a guy that really got hit hard and could have easily shut it down for the night or a little while longer, but he was back in no time. Not only did he come back, he played extremely well. Those are the guys you ultimately need to win."

(Thanks to CG for the head’s up on this earlier.)

Y’think Gleason might get JR’s vote for “C”? Nothing about Staal in his comments today. JR didn’t seem to need to temper his praise for Tim, evne after he drew the “3rd man in” (defending the same EStaal) either. Just sayin’

Anytime HM. :) JR respects leadership, even if that person makes a mistake or two along the road (lord knows that man isn’t perfect either).

by caniacgirl on Dec 1, 2009 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

I do pay very close attention to what JR says when he speaks, and I do place significance in his praise.

The buzz from no less than Forslund when we acquired Tim-may was “Captain material”. He’s been my leading prospect for Captain of the New Canes since spending some time with him at an annual charity lunch a year or so ago (best player guest we’ve ever had), pending evidence of deserving it, that is.

I’ve seen that evidence begin to emerge this year. And, I’m sure I’m not alone.

by Elsker on Dec 1, 2009 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

I think I speak for almost (no maybe all?) the ladies on here when I say no you’re not alone.

And no I don’t say that because we all think he’s “dreamy” or whatever, but because we actually do see his leadership qualities emerging.

You kinda cut my legs out from underneath me about the “not just saying this ‘cause he’s hot” thing. ;)

by caniacgirl on Dec 1, 2009 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

I had lunch today with a longtime Canes fan who I hadn’t seen since the playoffs last Spring. He’s ready to dump Brindy, has no use for Pits, but absolutely loves Gleason – especially the last 2 games with his evident anger in both Buffalo (when he pushed a little hard defending the crease after the whistle) and then his “3rd man in” last night. His comment – “He’s the only guy who really seems to care and is angry about this season”

This is from a gruff middle aged hockey guy. He finds that Tim is inspiring now more than ever – when that’s exactly what we need. Oh and some goals would be nice too. But that’s not really Timmy’s department now is it?

(I didn’t ask him if he thought he was hot)

by caniacgirl on Dec 1, 2009 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

I will always remember the Canes Corner with Gleason. He said, “Sometimes you just need to fight.” That’s the attitude, along with the skills, that makes him one of my favorite players. Seeing that rage last night when he thought someone was after Staal, fighting through the ref and grabbing at the guys jersey not once, but twice, to pick him up and esplain the situation to him, that’s full of awesome.

by Gillimus on Dec 1, 2009 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Full of awesome and screams “I am a team guy”. Love it.

by caniacgirl on Dec 1, 2009 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

Oh and some goals would be nice too.

During lunch at that 2008 charity event, Tim-may remarked to us that he really didn’t get too many assists. I told him all he needed to do on this team was start some nice low shots in on goal and that there were lots of nice young men that would be GLAD to help him get a few more assists. :-D

by Elsker on Dec 1, 2009 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

For the record, I like Timmy a lot, but I don’t think he’s hot (sorry).

I do think he’d be a great Captain.

Man up JR and do something! You set sail and hit the iceberg. Now you are stranding all the wimmin and children and going down with the ship? At least do what you say and bring up the Rats and rotate them through at this level and get some exper.

I still can’t fathom how a person at that level with his history can fail so completly and not at least try to rectify it and some form of team that has pride and gives total effort every second on the ice, win or lose.

Give me a team that wants to play and win. They may not win a game, but they will play like winners.

JR is trying to fix things, if not for this season then at least for the future. I firmly believe that. But he’s already pushing the limits of how much the team can spend and who in their right mind is going to want the guys we’re trying to get rid of? (Yes I know JR wanted them at the beginning, but very few people predicted the epic fail that we’re seeing now.) There is only so much the guy can do without someone willing to play ball with him-you need two to make a trade.

now we are talking

you are absolutely correct. This is exactly what I meant from the beginning. JR is finally admits it but it seems to late to change anything for this season. Trades for draft picks? May be the only Possibility, as it may give space for yongsters, but you are correct – there always two guys needed on the market – seller (JR) and buyer (opps…. tough to find one…)
And if not done soon, will not be done before next season.
Speaking of Mo – well, looks like only over…. I have no logical explanation other that he is trying to establish his own authority through Mo over the entire club. Or I am stupid (btw, very possible). Someone already broght an idea of J. Deniels… worthy, isn’t it?

All above is my personal opinion.

Paladin, I appreciate your passion and enthusiasm, but JR just laid out that he understands the ship needs righting but it can’t be done this week. This is a guy that knows more hockey than all of us put together, and he’s got enough sense NOT to do something just to do something. This season is painful for us all, JR as well, but either have faith that the pimp-hand will do his best to make us better for next year and the year after or root for someone else. At some point you have to acknowledge that as much fun as it is to fling poo and hoot, maybe this guy has his job for a reason.
I’m not trying to tell you to shut it or tell you that you don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m very much a hockey neophyte. But I don’t understand why you’d be happier rooting for this team if only they were losing with different players. And make no mistake, they would still lose with the Rats on the ice. There’s a reason they’re in the AHL.
It’s going to be a loooong season, and all of us will see a shiny future in every win and black despair in every loss. We all recognize that this team was put together with a failed plan, and that Sutter should have been up from the start. But continuing to point out that you think the GM is a retard gets a little old after a while.
Please understand that I am not attacking you personally. As I said, I love your passion. And thank you for helping me get my own head straight about how I need to root for my Canes. I’d just like to bring you away from the dark side a little and drink the kool-aid and believe in the shiny Cup that should be our future.

"If we can’t get back to that playoff spot, in some ways we don’t want to perform too well, because then you get in those years where you pick 15th or 20th in the draft instead of picking in the top five," he said. "I remember the last time we had a bad year [a 30th-place finish in 2002-03], it was hard for the fans, it was frustrating for us and it was ugly, but there’s a big prize waiting if that happens. The prize we got last time was Eric Staal and a big reason why we won a Stanley Cup

by Bob Wage on Dec 1, 2009 9:03 PM EST reply actions

Honestly, that article restored a lot of faith for me in JR. He recognizes that he made a mistake, he recognizes that his hands are kinda tied right now, and he sees the dilemma in trying to squeak in to the 8th playoff spot versus letting the season crap out and getting a difference-maker in the draft. I really don’t want his job, especially this year.

Man the koolaid fountain is flowing. JR, being honest? PUHLEEEEEZ! The has been wrong at almost every turn this year. So he’s right he screwed up. Hmmmm, so now all is good?WTF? If he is saying he’s going to throw the season, he should be terminated immediatley and with prjudice, owner or not. If they can push the Disney’s out, anybody can go. I have no stomach or sympathy for a chronic failing loser, I’m surprised at all of you for agreeing with that.

 I guess the fan base is comprised of losers, too? No wonder the team sucks, nobody gives a dam. Let’s throw away a whole season so we get a draft pick?

That’s why you argue with me about no plan B. You want to fail. Well I don’t. Losers suck. JR is a loser. Anybody, you all included probably don’t care, but you have lost respect in my eyes. I have a kid that plays hockey, his dream is like every other kids. He wants to play in the NHL. Not lose for a draft pick.

While Bettman would probably support any loser, I as a fan will never tolerate it. I will stick by my beliefs that you always try your best at everything you do, maybe set a good friggin’ example to the fan base youtth? Maybe rotate the youth up and gain some exper. You don’t just throw your hands up or lay there. You get the hell up and do what’s expected.

I thought you wanted him to be a business man? Any schrewd business man would prefer the #1 pick after accepting the season is lost.

by Killswitch on Dec 1, 2009 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

A loser has a mentality that is mutualy exclusive to being a screwd business man. The way this team has been run is a prime example of a failure, so to profer the idea that furthering the losing is a good thing is like some nightmarish obama-istic hell. I’d say look at our government and this team as examples of what not to do.

 While the draft pick is nice and I have no issues with getting a good draft pick. The psychology of losing is an anethma. If that idea is spread amongst the players, they all have to go. None of the ones that are trying will have any respect for the org and they will stop doing what is expected. Those that aren’t doing the job will get a reprieve and coast. The damage caused by adopting a losing mentality will far outweigh any draft pick or picks.

The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......

by Paladin6 on Dec 1, 2009 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

You might be underestimating the mans intelligence. I wonder how the locker room feels about the GM saying he’s going to keep things as is in order to get the # 1 pick. It may be a last ditch effort to get them rolling but its a motivation tactic nonetheless. JRs a pro.

by Killswitch on Dec 1, 2009 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

On a point by point line deal, I would agree wioth most of that at face value.

However, it would be pretty lame to try that tact at this point, 6 games into the big losing streak maybe, but now is too little too late. So while, it is a tactic, so is sticking your head in the sand or thumb up your ass.

The other problem is that just ‘cause you suck and lose don’t mean you ge the pick. The lottery…that we lost the last time we were in this wonderful position. Staal? Not real impressive as of late. Interesting to see what he turns out to be.

As for JR, he’s hit more than he’s missed in the past, but lately he is Schleprock and is lost.

My .02 anyway.

Obviously the deal(s) he wants have not presented themselves. He may be throwing motivation their way to get them to play better, in turn increasing their trade value, who knows. Maybe a # 1-15 draft pick and the picks/players worthy of him trading for is his end game.

Maybe I misinterpreted what JR said, but I didn’t read that as “let’s purposefully tank the rest of the season in hopes of getting the next Crosby”. I read it as “I’m not going to do anything hasty and reckless in an effort to save a season that’s probably better left for dead”. It sounds like just semantics but there is a world of difference.

In other words, he’s telling fans not to expect him to make blockbuster deals that end up costing us our best players or future just to squeak into the playoffs (almost an impossibility at this point) or end up 10th in the league. He’ll make changes where he can to get this team winning and headed in the direction he wants it to go next season. If that coincides with us getting the #1 pick so be it. It may pay far greater dividends than a middle of the road finish would.

No one is going to tell the guys to go lose games on purpose. The guys won’t lose games on purpose-they are far too competitive for that. You can’t win the Cup every year-JR is just reminding us that sometimes a loss isn’t really a loss in the grand scheme of things.

by caniacgirl on Dec 1, 2009 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

How about, I’m not going to do anything hasty again and think I know more than God and screw up a whole team for even longer than the year I already condemned them to?

And read it again, I did a couple atimes and it just seems clear he has no plans or ability to do anything.

I understand your point, and frustration, Paladin. I really do. But what do you want the man to do? Trade someone? Who will he trade and to whom? No one wants what we can give up and if he were to deal away Staal or Ward just to try and stop the bleeding, he would ruin the team for the long term. You want him to bring someone up from the minors? We don’t have the cap room for it-yes his hands are tied by decisions he made, but that’s not a situation you can wave a magic wand at and make disappear. You want him to waive someone? No one will pick them up and we’ll still be stuck with them.

I think your dislike for some of his past decisions are affecting the way you’re reading the statement.

BTW, I’m not advocating some trade. There is a shitload of things that can be done right now.
1. Start bringing the kids up and use this year as gladiator school. Would only take minor shuffling to make the money work. Not to mention the send downs would be an epic statement.
2.Figure out WTF is going on with the coaching. Get Ron out and sort out the pieces so it is at least not a toxic thing.
3.Quit saying “Oh I fucked up and I’m sorry” and do something about it.
4.Give up the idea of PO’s, start working on lines. Staal is ineffective, Sutter wasn’t until he got demoted. I think there is alot right there. Staal has no right to 1st line center if he isn’t producing. Sutter matched his numbers in half as many games. Try to start making smart choices, not repeat the same assinine ones that got us here.
5.Get a goalie and a back up and stick with it. It’s the most important slot, so fill it and ride it.

That’s the sort of stuff I want to see happen.

A

The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......

by Paladin6 on Dec 1, 2009 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

I’m going to do this point by point so everything stays straight.

1. “Minor shuffling” depends on who you send down. If you’re sending A.Ward down for example, you’re still paying him his NHL salary since he only has a one way deal. To then take on the additional NHL salary of his replacement is a financial burden this team can’t afford.

2. The coaching is a mess. But I don’t think it’s the whole mess. JR could take action in this area, but then he runs the risk of becoming “that” GM that can’t leave things alone. That can create more problems than it solves.

3. He’s trying. You can’t just snap your fingers and have a trade work out or suddenly find a few million bucks in your coat pocket to sign another guy. These things take time and he has to consider the future as well as the present when doing so.

4. The line combos are more likely the domain of the coaching staff. See point 2 as to why him sticking his nose in there may not be a good idea.

5. I think the goalie thing is one area he’s done extremely well in. He brought Legace in because Peters/Murphy weren’t ready for this situation and Manny has performed well considering the circumstances. They have the number one slot locked up in Ward. Now it’s just going to be a numbers game to figure out who mans the door opening tasks on the bench.

by caniacgirl on Dec 1, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

1. Wrong, this team can’t afford to not fill seats, the diff between the payments would be made up in tickets. Also, howabout start buying out some of these slouches and cut the payment in half?
2.Wrong, he can in no way , shape or form create mnore problems than he already has. The coaching is a mess and needs to be dealt with now. If he is some friggin’ messiah give hiom the dam job so he can “be that GM” be better than what we got now.
3.Bullshit
4. Ditto
5.He was forced to make something happen and Legace was got. I’m fine with Ward and Legace or Ward and Leights. Just pick it and ride it. And JR had nothing to do with it, he had the freak preesure of having no option and it was the best thing he did all year.

No, I went through this crap with all you over the summer and you were all wrong, period. I dam sure ain’t gonna turn around now. I’m tired of paying to root for losers, driven by a gutless failing GM. The season is a loss (thanks JR!!) buit there is alot of things that still can be gained besides some lottery at draft pick.

Paladin ignore this

He wants the recognition for wanting Sutter and maybe Rodney? on the team from the start rather than signing/trading for Yelle, Ward/Alberts. Like that would have made a difference.

And if your only response is profanity, I’m not going to discuss this with you anymore. I don’t swear at you, please don’t swear at me.

by caniacgirl on Dec 1, 2009 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

And it’s the salary cap that’s an issue for sending guys down/bringing them up. That’s a hard and fast rule and has nothing to do with putting butts in the seats.

by caniacgirl on Dec 1, 2009 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

The unfortunate thing about hockey in the “Raleigh Market” is that the only thing that will put butts in seats is winning……

It’s sad… I know….. everyone should want to see hockey…. good or bad….

But there are too many “fringe fans” and too many other things to do for a lot of people to pay a lot of money to see these guys lose….

Although…. I paid a lot of money to go see them play on the road…. in Philly….

…..yeah…. that sucked…

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Dec 1, 2009 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

While all that is absolutely true, it wasn’t the point I was trying to make. Paladin said that getting more people in the stands (presumably because we were winning) would take care of any money concerns involved in shuffling guys to and from the minors. My point was the salary cap is independent of the revenue the team brings in from ticket sales.

I think I’ve gotten past the anger stage and now I’ve finally reached acceptance. How many more steps are there??

Look, we suck. I don’t like it and I certainly don’t think the players and coaches like it, but this shouldn’t be a long term problem like losing franchises have. We’ll have a lot of guys shipping out after the season and plenty of young blood coming up.

JR took a gamble on one last playoff run before rebuilding and he lost that gamble. I still have faith in his ability to build a winner. Hopefully we can make a move or two and add some missing pieces to the team before the season is over.

Either way, I’ll be watching, cheering, and drinking when our boys play. I’ll also be on here cussing players and arguing with you guys about who sucks and who’s playing well.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed my brief moment of Zen. I’ll probably be pissed off again next time I’m on. Good night!

MORE DETAILS ON CORVO INJURY:

The N&O ran this in their print edition this morning. Achilles was cut it seems.

Hurricanes head athletic trainer Peter Friesen said Corvo’s Achilles tendon was cut, but most of the damage was done to the muscle attached to the tendon.

Friesen said the cut came very close to the neurovascular bundle, a bunch of nerves and arteries. Had those been severed it would have been much worse, he said.

“You can lose function of your foot,” Friesen said. “Then you definitely don’t play high-level sports again.”

adds a different dimension to my tagline “Nor for the weak of stomach”.
