Erik Cole and Chad LaRose Out - Patrick Dwyer and Jiri Tlusty Recalled

The Carolina Hurricanes placed forwards Erik Cole and Chad LaRose on injured reserve today.   LaRose had been fighting a lower body injury for some time and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks, but Cole is suffering from an upper body concern which must be something fairly new.  He has played well in the past few games for the Canes but now is expected to be out 2-3 weeks.

The team is recalling forwards Patrick Dwyer and newly acquired Jiri Tlusty from Albany.  River Rats leading scorer, Jerome Samson has not been recalled yet, even though he has been getting rave reviews from the AHL.

More about this later.

Why not bring up Samson? Somebody must not care to much for him.

He’s like an Aucoin, big AHL stats but a game not well suited for the NHL I’d imagine.

LaRose and Cole Out Long Term -- is this the start of rebuilding

I know LaRose has been hurting for a while. Cole’s injury seems new. I wonder if putting them on IR is the start of the rebuilding process. I wonder if LaRose is going to be traded.

Although I am sorry it is due to injuries, I am glad to see Tlusty and Dwyer get their chances with the Hurricanes. I’d like to see Samson and Boychuk get some playing time as well. Samson is on my list for fourth line center or wing next year.

by abramsdoug on Dec 11, 2009 10:47 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

No use in playing through any type of injury at this point. They have a legit reason to sit them down and at the same time get to look at some younger guys and all while preparing to secure a high draft pick.

I think Cole went down behind the Devil’s net on Wednesday, slow getting up

I’d put in a snarky comment about still having Brindy, but that would just be hurtful.

How many injuries does it take

before you fire the training staff?

by DidJussiThat? on Dec 11, 2009 10:55 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Wow that is a jump to conclusions. We don’t even know what the injuries are? If it was something sustained on the ice due to a hit taken poorly, I don’t see how this is on the trainers.

by wylde4canes on Dec 11, 2009 11:18 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You bring up a decent point…. It was not so long ago that JR sort of put the training staff under the gun because there were so many injuries….

Although I don’t think the trainers could have done a thing about Cam Ward and/or Joe Corvo getting sliced w/ skates….

But I do wonder sometimes why it seems that we get so many little nagging injuries which turn into something major…. and our guys always seem to want to play hurt.

I appreciate guys not going down when they are injured…. everyone knows that takes toughness…. but if you are so hurt to the point where you hurt your team…. then please sit…

Why is Sammy going to be a healthy scratch and not Brind’Amour?

Sammy was listed as having a lower body concern last game. As for this game, I don’t know what the situation is.

Funny.....

….I have been beating this drum for two years and get savaged by the moronic homers every time I do. At some point if I have to keep bringing the car back to the mechanic you either switch cars or the mechanic. Considering the team has " switched cars " many times over the last 4 years and the constant injury issues have persisted, its time to switch the mechanic.

Could it also be that you keep buying used cars from discount dealers without paying attention to the carfax report? I have always felt the problem is we keep trading for players who have a history of being fragile, so we don’t have to give us much in return. It aint about being a homer for me, I could care less about Freisen.

Recycle.

I like the way you recycle the metaphor I used facebook weeks ago. Your constant use of the word homer gives you away, I forget your name, and no longer follow the canes on Facebook because of all of the idiots on there, but I remember us having this convo maybe a month or so ago when you were saying the Training Staff is to blame for all of our injuries…and I told you that is like blaming the mechanic for getting a flat tire when you constantly hit pot holes.

I know you think anyone who disagrees with your obvious hatred of Friesen is a “moronic homer”, so you can save the name calling for someone that is going to be bothered by it; to me it just diminishes your credibility.

I continue to disagree with you about this issue, the training staff in my mind cannot be blamed for our injury filled season. Some of the injuries are flukes, as I am sure you would agree (wardo, corvo come to mind first of course) But I truly believe a lot of these injuries come from our players simply having to try to hard; they are in a slump, lacking confidence and usually playing catch up all game. They are making bad decisions on the ice because they are getting desperate for wins. If our power play worked, our D was tighter (the list goes on and on) the games would be a little closer and the frustration levels would be lower. They wouldn’t have to push themselves so hard for 60 minutes (whether it looks like they are or not).

Long story short, as I said last month, I respect your opinion on the training staff, and understand why that is how you see it, but I also disagree fully, and that has nothing to do with the person in charge of training either, I just think that is not what is wrong with this season, not even in the top 5.

What makes you see my loyalty as blind? I could give a river rats ass who is the trainer, Im not defending the person or the organization, I think no matter who was in that role a lot of these injuries would of still happened. I just dont agree with you Douchebag.

Another Monty Python reference

I don’t know…it seems to me that players hate missing games, and would be like the Black Knight and call a severed limb a “flesh wound” so they could stay in the lineup. Remember all those games Brind’Amour played a couple seasons ago with half a roll of duct tape around his skate? I think it was actually holding his foot on. If I were a player and a GM asked me to go on IR even though I wasn’t injured, I think I’d be going straight to the union.

Not entirely true. Jeff Schultz is a defensive Dman who has one goal on the year that Ondrej Pavelec has nightmares about. He usually pairs with Mike Green, but by himself might be an offensive threat to a five year old. Clearing and breakouts is where he shines.

Kind of goes along with Steps 1 and 2.

But I’ll add it for clarity’s sake.

Step 5-play on a line with serious offensive firepower. Put that line out as often as possible when playing the Carolina Hurricanes. If at all possible, use that line when A.Ward is on the ice.

Finally, we seem to be understanding how to work the IR list.

I hope we abuse utilize it so much the rest of this season that JR is constantly getting letters and calls from the league office about it.

That’s one way to audition new talent…and even sell a few walk-up tickets.

I agree that is the best use of the remainder of the season. Sort of like having a 5 month training camp with 60 exhibition games…except the players actually try harder, like maybe their jobs are on the line….
