Patrick Dwyer and Jiri Tlusty Reassigned to Albany

The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they reassigned forwards Patrick Dwyer and Jiri Tlusty to Albany.  Both players were assigned to the Hurricanes in time for Friday's game against Washington when Erik Cole and Chad LaRose were put on injured reserve.

Sergei Samsonov was close to returning to the lineup and he will most likely be ready to play on Wednesday night when Dallas comes to town, but the Canes will still be short a forward.  Will they bring back either Tlusty or Dwyer, or will they give someone else a look?

Jerome Samson leads the River Rats in scoring, (11G 12A, 23 points in 29 games), and probably deserves a shot with the big club.  More news to come on Monday.

you have a point

Maybe if Ott tries it in Raleigh on Wednesday the refs will pay more attention….Can we post this picture on the mirrors of the officials’ washroom?

I wonder if they have a team lined up to take Leighton. He already knew he was going on re-entry waivers… and it doesn’t make sense for them to send him to Albany on Friday and to re-call him on Sunday…. unless Cam or Manny are injured….

it will be interesting to see if someone takes him…. His quote on the N&O web site really sounded like he is truly ready to get out of town…. in a hurry….

Missed the game last night, how did Tlusty play?

He looked good, even hit the post on one shot. Again that line looked the best and of course the fastest.

Bring Back Tlusty and Boychuk

If only Samsonov is ready, bring back Tlusty and Boychuk and scratch Brind’Amour. Move Kostopoulos back to the fourth line. If Cole is back, and Brian LeBlanc at his twitter page seems to think Cole is back, then bring up Tlusty or Boychuk, scratch Brind’Amour and move Kostopoulos back to the fourth line.

for Brian LeBlanc’s suggestion that Cole may be ready along with Samsonov. I would not be surprised if in fact Cole’s issue was a sore neck. That is the kind of nerve compression following a compression fracture that has healed oftentimes can respond quickly to treatment.

Could be a Salary Cap Move to Reassign Tlusty and Dwyer

With Leighton on Re-entry waivers, there could be a salary cap issue requiring Tlusty and Dwyer to be reassigned to Albany. I assume no NHL team will bite and that there is an AHL affiliate of another NHL team who will accept the loan of Leighton.

by abramsdoug on Dec 13, 2009 3:58 PM EST reply actions

That was my thought A.Dog. Since we don’t play again until Wednesday it doesn’t make a ton of sense to pay Dwyer, Tlusty, Cole and LaRose their NHL salaries. Better to send Dwyer and Tlusty back and then call them up again if they’re needed. Plus Daniels must be begging for some of his guys back.

Odd Depth Chart at Carolina Hurricanes website

Check this out:

http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/depthchart.htm?dcid=12

Looks pretty strange to have Cole on the fourth line. I assume Cole is border-line or really what is happening is that with Leighton going on re-entry waivers, the Hurricanes have to show somebody in all the positions. I’ve asked Paul Braneky for an explanation. He is usually very prompt.

The Law of Unintended Consequences at Work

The law of unintended consequences is here at work with the Carolina Hurricanes. I doubt Jim Rutherford could or would have traded for Tlusty but for this year’s bizarre meltdown. I realize Tlusty is young and we haven’t seen that much of him; but I predict we will be thrilled that trade was made. I remember seeing Jokinen at practice after he had played perhaps one game and from the start I was convinced Tampa Bay was on LSD to put him on waivers.

If the veterans had come into the year and one fire; but then fizzled, we’d be stuck with a 20th to 25th pick and more years of suffering as the Hurricanes talent level just didn’t match the top tier teams.

As long as the Hurricanes coaches and management and fans realize we are in the catbird seat and chill out, all will be well and sooner rather than later. In sports the only thing predictable is that nothing will ever go the way you planned. Now if Tampa Bay or Florida can just unload another critical player for dirt cheap, all will be right in the world. Nathan Horton sounds just right to me.

by abramsdoug on Dec 13, 2009 4:27 PM EST reply actions

Horton?

This is the second time you have mentioned Horton. What makes you think FLA wants to get rid of him? I wouldn’y mind nursing an ailing David Booth back to health. But again, why would a Division opponeny give us anything good?

by Caniac233 on Dec 13, 2009 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

Several different commentators have indicated Horton is on the trading block. I think money overrules division rivalries. Florida has real money issues I think. Booth is their franchise player, so I doubt they would be any more likely to trade Booth than for the Hurricanes to trade Staal. Horton is underachieving for Florida, I think; but would be a perfect fit for Carolina.

I guess ‘chilling out’ doesn’t apply to comments about A.Ward, R.Brind’Amour, and P.Maurice ?

by drifterscape on Dec 13, 2009 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

chilling out

Sadly, my comments re Aaron Ward and Brind’Amour are
my most chilled out self. I thought my comments re Maurice were
really sangine. On balance, I think Maurice is doing as well as one
could hope under trying circumstances.

If things play out in the draft as it appears it will, everybody will owe a huge debt of gratitude to those players whose poor play contributed to the team’s bottom finish. Only through significant under-performance by key players are we now leading the charge for either Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin. Any good team would love to have the ability to add a potential superstar through the draft. It’s an opportunity that comes once a decade.

Rats playing in Hartford now

Dwyer just picked up an assist on Chris Terry’s 1st period goal for the Rats. McBain was part of the play too.

Tlusty is not playing.

Rats up 1-0 after one period. Going for 7 in a row.

About to interview Bryan Rodney on the radio feed.

I really like Dwyer as a 4th line player for next year’s squad. He plays with a lot of heart and does pretty well on the PK. I don’t believe you can ask to much of him, but I think he would fit well in the role I indicated.

Dwyer on Fourth Line

Dwyer on the fourth line makes sense. I’d also like to see whether Samson could fit in the fourth line as well.

by abramsdoug on Dec 13, 2009 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

to be honest, I don’t know where Samson fits in to next years team. I haven’t seen him play, so I don’t know what his strengths and weaknesses are. I’ve heard he’s a Keith Aucoin type player, but I just don’t know. Maybe if he gets a chance in the N this year, I can see what he has. My team make-up is different than that of the Canes organization. I like to see a scoring 1st line, a good two-way 2nd line, a physical 3rd line, and a PK playing 4th line. The Canes seem to want balanced lines, so my line make-up would be different that what they are trying to accomplish.

I guess we’ll learn more as this season progresses. I just hope we get an idea of what we have instead of waiting it out.
