TSNBobMcKenzie I would imagine Ward clears waivers, gets put on re-entry waivers and perhaps someone takes him at half price.

Think they’re hoping the same for Leighton right now.

Probably. I’d really like for both of them to get picked up both for their sake and the sake of the team.

Comments from Brind`Amour on being scratched

Chip Alexander got some comments from the Captain after practice today and posted them at Canes Now

“It’s a private situation, that’s about all I can say,” Brind’Amour said after practice at the RecZone. “I don’t want to be a distraction. It is what it is. Obviously it’s not something I’m accustomed to or whatever. But it’s a decision that they make, so … I guess the main thing was to support my teammates and just keep working hard, and if you get another chance to get back in there and you do you best, and that’s really the way I approached it.”

Do you think Rod had seen Chip’s Monday debate question from last night yet?

Brind'Amour and the Captain Debate

My guess is that Brind’Amour read Chip’s Cane Now Monday Debate. Brind’Amour is between a rock and a hard place. He has earned his contract and extended the length of his contract to help the organization with the salary cap. His skills are deteriorating more than he ever imagined; but he still believes he can play hockey. It’s like politics, I guess, once a person is elected and experiences the adrenaline rush from it, they almost never willingly quit. Some athletes can’t give it up without a fight.

He is certainly not a whiner. Objectively, it’s time for him to transition to coaching. It was a positive sign that at Ottawa he led the teams in hits. If he wants to keep playing on the fourth line, he ought to become the Ruutu of the fourth line and hit with authority everything that moves.

All that being said, if I were in charge, I would healthy scratch him and I’d make him a player-coach. It’s going to be tough medicine for Brind’Amour whenever he has to retire. I’d do it now when the playoffs are nowhere close. I’d want to find out which players can turn the page; and I’d want the team to have the remaining part of the season to mourn the loss of Brind’Amour as a captain. My take is if you know you have a tough decision, make is as soon as you can and get it behind you.

Hopefully there is enough pressure on the front office that they are willing to start making the tough decisions that need to be made.

This is from the ESPN Rumor Central today…..guess a trade wasnt in the works after all?

“The Carolina Hurricanes will probably start trading away their veterans soon, and it may start with D Aaron Ward.

The Ottawa Sun reports that Senators GM Bryan Murray is interested in Ward, while he’s rumored to be trying to move Chris Campoli and Brian Lee to Columbus.

But Murray will have to beat out a few teams for Ward. The Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers also appear to be in on the Ward sweepstakes.

Meanwhile, Don Brennan of the Sun believes the Senators should go after Ray Whitney. "

Don't get me wrong - I like Walker and Samsonov both

I agree on liking Walker, but there were those rumors a couple weeks ago that paired Ward and Walker on the trading block. Maybe a coincidence that Ward is on waivers now, but I’m wondering if JR plans to try and dump salary where he can.

Walker might have some value to a bubble team.

Scotty has also been on the ice less than 10 mins/game since coming back from his upper body (wrist?) injury. it’s been awhile since he impacted a game.

Not that I know of. I would imagine Walker has trade value and if he wants to play in the NHL next year, his best shot might be to waive his NTC depending on the team that wants him.

Think so …. but I doubt he’d be going to the minors anyway.

by Cory Lavalette on Dec 14, 2009 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

of course not – just trying to understand the rules.

Did you see the wording of the Canes release on A Ward (written by Branecky)?

If Ward were to clear tomorrow at noon, it’s unlikely that an assignment to Albany or other such move would be made, although he could eventually be placed on re-entry waivers. For now, he’ll probably stick on the team similar to what happened to Stephane Yelle in late October. It should be noted that Yelle has since played his best hockey of the season.

The comment about Yelle playing his best hockey, since he was put on waivers after 10 games, (a long while ago), is a little more ‘editorial’ than informational from Paul B. Is he implying something similar might happen with Ward-4? Seems like he’d be interesting to hear his thoughts if he didn’t think his boss was listening.

Gleason for the "C" :
Just what do we need to do to make this happen?

by Carolyn Christians on Dec 14, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

That is my understanding of the difference between a no-trade clause and a no-movement clause.

With Whitney’s no-movement clause, he not only cannot be traded, he also cannot be waived or sent down to “force” movement.

More Veterans to be Traded

I think more veterans are going to be traded. Who can’t like Walker and LaRose, but neither are producing consistent with their salaries — whether or not from injuries:

Scott Walker: $2,500,000 salary, +/- -1; 2 goals and 2 assists. Averaging $1,500,000 a goal.

Chad LaRose: $1,500,000 salary, +/- -14; 1 goal, 5 assists;

by abramsdoug on Dec 14, 2009 1:22 PM EST reply actions

I think players like Scott Walker bring “intangibles” that are worth the money….. but may not show up on the score sheet….

The only problem with that is that when the team sucks all anyone pays attention to is the score sheet….

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Dec 14, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

Scott Walker and Intangibles

Walker is the essence of a warrior and a teammate. If I were a GM, however, I would be looking at the players who are available for $2,500,000 a year and would compare their upside potential and long term potential. I would trade Walker and would hate having to do so. I don’t think there is space on the lines next year for Scott Walker, despite all the great intangibles he possesses.

by abramsdoug on Dec 14, 2009 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

I've said it before and I'll say it again

No one is taking LaRose with that deal until the draft or unless he’s part of a bigger deal. And based on his production, I doubt anyone takes him.

Remember, trades involve two parties. And while the Canes may be willing to move LaRose I don’t know anyone that wants him. If anyone wanted him that bad he would have been gone in early July.

Do you believe in miracles?

by C-Leaguer on Dec 14, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

LaRose

Agreed. LaRose will not be traded until the trade deadline or as part of a larger trade. We love LaRose but with his size and skill set teams are not clamoring to bring him onto their team. Eaves is playing fourth line in Detroit for $500,000 this year for example. Eaves has more skill, about the same size, but less hustle.

by abramsdoug on Dec 14, 2009 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

I’m just wondering if there is no one in the league that would trade for Ward. I like the fact something is being done, but could we at least get a mid round draft pick or prospect for the guy.

by PackPride17 on Dec 14, 2009 1:35 PM EST reply actions

I know! Maybe we can get the 5th round pick back that we gave to Boston (with Eaves) when we acquired Ward. Seems about right.

Question. All this putting players on waivers, if nobody claims them, aren’t we just left with a group of disgruntled guys who feel like they aren’t wanted and don’t have anything to play for? Wouldn’t this be pretty terrible for team spirit and morale?

True, I guess it disabuses players of any notion that they could go somewhere else and have it better — if nobody else wants them, it’s up to them to make the best of it here. Still, hate to have a team full of last-chancers.

We have the worst record in the NHL so I don’t think waiving under performing players could make the spirit or morale any worse than it already is.

Bet it makes things pretty peppy in the Albany locker room these days. Seven-wins-in-a-row: coincidence? I think not.

I'll let that one go.

I like that idea.

Actually, I think being put on waivers.....

would be worse than getting punched in one’s “manhood”.

Waivers would be like questioning if they had any “manhood”

When all else fails, read the instruction manual.

Blackhawks bloggers are circling Ward: via Bleacher Report

Ward, 36, has a $2.5 million cap number and a contract that expires after this season, which would make him a great rental and salary dump for the Hawks. So far this season, ward has only six points and a minus-15 rating, neither of which are very good for a player averaging nearly 18 minutes per game. However, when you put Ward’s -15 into the context that the best rating on the Canes is even, his plus-minus is as much a sympton of being on a miserable team as it is an idictment of Ward’s play.

Can we all go over and convince them that A Ward is the Blueline Solution they’re looking for? Can’t fault poor Aaron for being on a team with a bunch of losers, right (wink wink)?

I’m totally content to let them think it’s the rest of the team’s fault.

I guess the Hurricanes were a terrible team last year and didn’t realize it; and it just took Aaron Ward to teach the team how to become horrible.

by abramsdoug on Dec 14, 2009 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, terrible.....

they were lucky, undeserving, over-reaching, paid off the refs…..

Anymore “excuses” why they went as far as they did?

Silly A.Dog. A.Ward made us better! He couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the blackhole that is this team. We’re bringing his game down. If he were playing somewhere else, he’d be a shoe in for the Norris.

Just think how big Aaron Ward’s shoes are to fill when he is gone; and how incredibly bad we would have been but for his heroic efforts thus far this season.

Shoes? That’s it!!! If he woulda wore skates…Boy Chicago sure called that one..

well.. we could just simply trade for seidenberg again!? The FL Panthers aren’t playing any better than we are right now.

Do people actually wear shoes in North Carolina. That’s the problem right there.

Has anyone been stupid enough willing to take Aaron Ward yet?

Please????

So if you put someone on waivers on the weekend, teams get an extra 24 hours to claim them on re-entry. So I guess if nobody wants Leights after 48 hours then what?

For some reason I remember reading/hearing that they would compensate us for his services. As far as what that means for our bottom line, I don’t know.

With Lavi coaching the Flyers? 0, which I am sure will gall the league mightily, the only reason for Boston v Philly is Fenway and fights.

isn’t it kind of funny how we spend to the cap for the first time and it blows up in our face. I’m pretty sure PK will only go to somewhere around $50M next season.

I think you're right

especially considering how many rookies will (hopefully) be coming up next year there really shouldn’t be a reason to splash out…
