Patrick Dwyer and Bryan Rodney Recalled from Albany
The Carolina Hurricanes announced this afternoon that they recalled forward Patrick Dwyer and defenseman Bryan Rodney from the Albany River Rats. Both players will be available for tomorrow night's game against Dallas.
It was expected that the team would recall a forward because they were short a player, although Jiri Tlusty might have been the team's first choice. Tlusty has had some kind of visa trouble in Toronto.
It was unexpected that the team would recall Rodney. This move could lead to speculation that something concrete might be up with Aaron Ward, or perhaps there is another injury on the blueline. In Ottawa, Ward, Tim Gleason, Andrew Alberts, Brett Carson, Jay Harrison, and Joni Pitkanen all played.
Of that group, Gleason is the only one who has not made it to practice this week. Perhaps he is not ready to play tomorrow night? Either way, it's interesting that they recalled Rodney. We will find out what is up.

I really hope that A.Ward is heading out and it’s not that Gleason is hurt.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
I’d take a hurt Timmy over any form of Award any day. I also like the fact that we have call ups to give Timmy a breather if he needs it. God knows he won’t sit out given a choice, but given the choice of laying outy a game and having a call up…
The kids are working, just need to keep the purge going. Be interesting if there is even another call up in the morning…
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
I’m hoping A. Ward takes the waivers like Yelle did. Yelle was doing terrible and has played pretty solid since his trip up and down the waiver wire. I don’t think that A. Ward will be assigned to Albany, so it’s up to him to get himself together. And Gleason’ll be back soon, an A-bomb couldn’t keep him from the ice.
Dwyer and Rodney -- Interesting Decisions
I think it is interesting that Dwyer and Rodney were the choices. I like how Rodney plays and think he can help solve what I see as the single most critical flop this year for the Hurricanes (which is saying a lot given how many problems there have been) — the Hurricanes’ bottom dwelling power play.
They are giving Dwyer a very hard look this year. I wonder if he is going to be Yelle’s replacement next year. In any event, the more Albany Rats they bring up, the happier I am. I am looking forward to getting back to the RBC. It seems like forever since the Hurricanes have been at home.
+1 on Rats
I haven’t done the cap math, with Leighton gone it would seem a bit more breathing room for some Rats to play up here. If A Ward does go, then absolutely more cap space to let the boys get some ice time. I would love to see some Rats get some time up here, then cycle back down. Get a taste of what is needed up here and then let Mr Daniels do some more great work developing them in Albany. It would be a huge plus for the organization if the Rats could do some damage in the playoffs.
I think the Leighton pick up only saves us $300K. We’re paying half of his contract. Same thing with AWard if he gets picked up on re-entry.
Every little bit helps, save a few dollars here and there.

Zac Dalphe Question and Answer
Zac Dalpe has enormous talent and may add to the firepower offensively.
Zac Dalphe on Turning Pro Asap from interview above
Based on this interview, I would think Carolina would want to sign Dalpe and get him to Albany as soon as is feasible — which I assume is after the hockey season ends.
SC: Has Carolina been in touch with you at all throughout the season thus far, and what are your plans in regards to turning pro down the road?
ZD: They’ve been at quite a few games to keep tabs on me I guess you could say. At this point I want to play pro as soon as I can, because I can hold off on finishing school until later. As soon as I get the opportunity to make the jump to pro, I’m going to take it.
Thanks for this – I’ve been looking for info on Dalpe. I’m going to put it in the clicks and clippings now as part of keeping tabs on him. Good find!
Gleason for the "C" :
Just what do we need to do to make this happen?

Dalpe in Albany this Year
I am trying now to track down whether the Hurricanes are going to try to sign Dalpe as soon as his hockey season ends. I think I remember that McBain played through his sophomore year and then signed, which allowed him to play a few games in Albany. I could be remembering incorrectly.
Hurricanes coaches and management are very enthusiastic about Dalpe. Although initially they wanted Dalpe to forego college, I think they are pleased with his development. He has gotten bigger and faster in college. The reports on Dalpe coming from the various scouting reports I read are that he is fast and has great moves and hands — something like a bigger, faster, younger Samsonov is my overall impression.
Yeah...
I think of that every time I see his name mentioned…

McBain Still Getting Accustomed to AHL Style
From what I gather McBain is still getting accustomed to the more physical style of the AHL. From what I’ve seen on AHLLive is he doing quite well and has enormous potential. I know the coaches and management are very excited about McBain and what to make certain they let him develop without being rushed.
I think McBain will be brought up for some games fairly soon. He was put in a very recent game as the third shooter in the shootout and scored to win the game. He is a player to watch and if he hits the weights like crazy in the off-season, he could be a player who like Sutter is simply too good to keep in Albany.
Here’s a scouting report on Jamie McBain:
http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/70704/Jamie_McBain
* Has good size and a lot of offensive ability. Displays the skill-set to log plenty of minutes on the ice.
Flaws
* Needs to tighten up his defensive-zone coverage in order to maximize his potential at the highest level.
Career Potential
* Offensive defenseman.
