Canes start 2010-11 season in Europe - UPDATE - Team Officials Say Process is not Complete

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/12/15/board_of_govenors_bettman/

In other news, a league executive confirmed that Columbus, Boston, Minnesota, San Jose, Phoenix and Carolina will be the six teams that start next season in Europe.

It's probably safe to bet that we will play Minnesota in Helsinki.  We have Ruutu, Pitkanen, and Jokinen, and they have Koivu, Miettenen, and Backstrom.  This should be great exposure for the Canes, but we lose a home game.  Also, will the travel affect the team's play early in the season?

That is a chance of a lifetime. I am planning on bringing my family and going. Sounds awesome.

Every team that has started over seas has struggle early. I doubt very much this team will be different. The bright side I took from this news is that this should be a great opportunity for some team building. There will be many new faces on this team next year. The organization needs to be targeting this trip and a way to bring the team together.

Laviolette used team building exercises early in the season very effectively in his tenure here. Not having it this year is one reason (one of many) for the slow start and the poor play. This trip, and the trials that will be part of the trip, could be something that draws the team together and helps the young kids bond as a group and helps the new faces get acquainted with the holdovers.

Well, they have struggled early the past few seasons, so it isn’t like things can get much worse.

Agreed….I don’t think it can hurt anything at this point. At least it’ll be a much more exciting start!

Hauska Joulua

At least that how I remember it. Daughter did a Finnish Christmas theme for school one year. Had to learn how to say “merry christmas” in the language….she ended up calling the embassy in NYC for pronunciation as those vowel have been known to maim people! Then she had to make a holiday food, so she researched and made this rice pudding with an almond hidden in it. Who ever found it received luck and had to sing a carol. It was fun.

Go Canes!

We’re there. It may even fall during my son’s fall trackout. If not, I guess he could repeat third grade if he had to.

so I guess this breaking news at CC may have prompted a call to JR’s cell at the BOG meeting. Good way for them to gauge fan reaction before making it official.

I wonder if the League will share whatever revenue brought in with the teams involved….

Each team would (in theory) lose at least one home game….

If it is a “home game” will STHers get a ticket included?

OT (sort of)

Did anyone go see Ruutu in Apex last night? Great interview, especially his story about his “arrest” and his “one move” in shootouts (a comment MM tried to make sound dirty).

And the letter girl was interesting….

I think if they play a couple games in Finland, this is a great idea. If they decide to put them somewhere else, I’m against it. I hope that’s what JR’s saying.

by yeaus on Dec 16, 2009 2:30 PM EST reply actions

Gleason for the "C" :

by Carolyn Christians on Dec 16, 2009 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

I went. It was pretty crowded, and Ruutu wore a classic out of his collection of colorful shirts. I thought it was a really good interview. He cracked up most of the time.

A girl threw what looked to be a card or a letter at Ruutu early in the interview and, after that didn’t work, later like crawled up beside him and put it right in front of him on the table. He just brushed it aside. She left looking disgruntled at the end. I’d never gone to one of these before, so I didn’t really know what to expect. I’m sure she was harmless, but I found the whole thing a little unsettling.

Good beer though!

I’m all for this as long as they make Tripp stay stateside. I don’t know if the government can handle that kind of international relations nightmare.

Any idea if the Canes would get an allotment of tickets for fans/family? I’d assume any Finland game would sell out, like, immediately. Heard from ticket rep, and statement is “nothing in the works at this time”. Not known if that will change.

Go Canes!

While still speculation, looks like we’re inching ever closer to an official decision. This is from Michael Ruuso who is the Wild’s beat reporter.

And I just had ANOTHER conversation with Mr. LTD just to ensure there is NO ambiguity with regard to the expectations for making this trip.

so the Canes can claim a 4 to 3 lead in Finns.

Besides, I doubt if he’d have too many immigration issues there.

I thought he was Finnish. I thought that is why there was this big squeal about it on this board.

That explains why the Czech flag was up in the rafters next to the Swedish flag at the RBC center.
