No Gleason Tonight: Stars at Hurricanes, Game Day Preview
The Dallas Stars are in town to do battle with the Carolina Hurricanes tonight at the RBC. The two teams tangled just a few weeks ago in Dallas as Marty Turco and his teammates blanked the Canes, 2-0.
Turco will be back in net tonight, but this time his counterpart will be Cam Ward, who has recently returned from injury. This will be the third game back for the goalie and he has yet to win since his return, (0-1-1). As a matter of fact, he only has two wins so far this entire season.
Carolina Hurricanes defenseman, Tim Gleason, will not play tonight. Gleason took a puck to the face off of an Alex Ovechkin shot last week, but was able to play later in the game and in Ottawa the following night. But since then, he has suffered from concussion like symptoms and the team has rested him.
Bryan Rodney has been recalled and will take his place. Rodney joins an already thin blueline as River Rat teammates Brett Carson and Jay Harrison also patrol the Carolina zone as they have filled in for the injured Joe Corvo and Niclas Wallin.
Joni Pitkanen, Aaron Ward, and Andrew Alberts are the healthy regulars.
The forwards remain without the services of Erik Cole and Chad LaRose, but Sergei Samsonov will return after missing a couple of games with a lower body concern. The lines should start off as follows:
- Staal, Whitney, Ruutu
- Cullen, Samsonov, Jokinen
- Sutter, Dwyer, Kostopoulos
- Yelle, Brind'Amour, Walker
According to Andrew's Dallas Stars Blog, the Dallas lines looked like the following this week: (The fourth line was mixed and matched).
Neal-Richards-Eriksson
Morrow-Ribeiro-Benn
Ott-Modano-Lehtinen
Barch-Wandell-Brunnstrom
Sutherby-Petersen-Brunnstrom
Petersen-Wandell-Brunnstrom
Grossman-Robidas
Skrastins-Daley
FIstric-Niskanen
Woywitka
Turco
The Hurricanes are riding a three game losing streak and have lost eight of their last ten, (2-7-1).
The Stars have played four overtime games in a row, losing two of them in shootouts, winning one shootout, and losing to the Ducks in OT, (1-0-3).
For more info about the Stars, check out Defending Big D and Andrew's Blog, (already listed above).
The game starts at 7 and there will be no local television. Chuck will be on 99.9 The Fan and we will have our Open Game Thread starting at 6:30, as always.
Will the Hurricanes young defense come through?

Get better Gleason.....
As much as I’d like to see Gleason on defense, the boy HAS to get healed up.
Let’s go Hurricanes!

Eric Staal to be scratched tonight?
Eklund’s got another rumor that Staal is going to be moved, this time to the Blues. If Staal is scratched, you know a deal is in the works.
If he’s not, well, then Eklund is still the fraud we all know him to be.
5 seconds left.
Do you believe in miracles?
YES!!
Just to put this in perspective, This is a rumor from Ek, and the Source is Bruce Garrioch. The only way this loses more credibility is if Tiger Woods said he did not sleep with this rumor.
Another nugget from that story says that the Flyers are a likely trade partner for the Flyers, well ummmm jeez ya think! In other news, water is still wet.
I heard a rumor the Eklund uses the Ottawa Sun to ….ummm…. clean up his bathroom business… :-)

During this past playoffs at our tailgate, one of Eklund’s reporters hung out with us. I have to say this person defended him saying he has more “inside” contacts than anyone in the league (protecting this person’s name to avoid retribution).
I nearly yacked my kielbasa.
I kept telling this person that generally it’s better to keep your mouth (or keyboard) shut about outlandish trade or FA rumors than spout them all off to everyone and falsely raise (or lower) hopes or better yet look completely stupid.
Glad to see everyone shares this opinion.
Staal and Eklund's Rumor
If anybody believes the Hurricanes are on the verge of trading Staal, they probably need to get tested for delusional thinking. I think the chances are greater that a comet is going to land in Carter Findley stadium than Staal being traded.
also heard A. Ward and Brindy to Penguins for Crosby , Malkin straight up….. Now damn where did I put that pipe??

Lucy in the sky with diatoms
no, wait.
I’ll get it.
Diatoms, atoms, no, no.
diagonals, no…..

If that happens during a NCSU-UNC football game,
so much the better for real sports-fans in the Triangle area.
Happerry Chrisolkwanaka
Sure,
those guys have primo parking spots and are so arrogant, almost thinking they’re UNC/NCSU fans or something.
Happerry Chrisolkwanaka
I would have included Duke in the NCSU/UNC group but
they need to have a football team first.
Every time I got dragged out there, I saw something more like this: THIS

More Rumors -- Whitney and Cullen Rumors or Predictions
From Crash the Crease. I can understand the logic at least of suggesting Whitney and Cullen could be traded. I disagree that Cullen is overpaid.

Players that will be on the move
NHL
The Christman roster freeze is a few days away and once that is over we all will be looking forward to the the NHL trade deadline.
Many names have been tossed around already that will be on the move come the March trade deadline.
Here is a list of names that will most likely be traded this season.
Carolina Hurricanes – Ray Whitney
The Hurricanes will be selling this season and Ray Whitney will be a very attractive forward for any team looking for a top 6/9 forward. He is very experienced and very underrated in terms of putting up points.
Montreal Canadiens – Jaroslav Halak
Big shocker here, Halak wants out of Montreal and wants more starts. Bob Gainey will accommodate Halak and trade him as soon as the right deal comes across his table.
Carolina Hurricanes – Matt Cullen
Cullen is in the last year of his over priced contract, teams looking for offensive depth will be interested in him and with the Hurricanes selling he will be on the move.
Just a few names for now, I will continually update this as we continue to get closer to the trade deadline.
Featured • trade rumors
Dallas was very physical the last time we played them. And I’m pretty sure our entire team was scared of them by the second period.
Let’s hope we survive tonight without any more injuries.
You got that right.

Eklund's latest hit, I mean article....
With the Laviolette connection, I would not be surprised at all to see Chad LaRose traded. He works best in a run and gun style and would be very comfortable in Laviolette’s system. He also brings an incredible work ethic. I would not be utterly shocked if Laviolette wanted to trade for Whitney — he is a great leader and could be the steadying influence the Flyers need. I could also see Laviolette wanting to get Cullen for similar reasons. Cullen’s speed and experience could really help the Flyers.
Rutherford will not trade Staal to anybody for any price under the sun.
From a Source,“4 Teams Scouting Philly Hardest Are…” and maybe a shocker.

Talking to a source that has informed me that the Flyers are indeed most likely to be making a move by Friday regardless of tomorrow night’s outcome and that the teams likely to be in the mix are the Los Angeles Kings, Tampa Lightning, Atlanta Thrashers, and Carolina Hurricanes.
Many of you are asking for the list of untouchables on this team. I feel that beyond Mike Richards, Timonen, Briere, and Pronger all bets are off. That is just my opinion based on discussions I have had.
The teams that are involved in these rumors are interesting to say the least.
Tampa: Vinny Lecavalier is the obvious name here, but that is a ton of money to take on. Beyond that, that Lightning are really more deep on the defensive end than anywhere else, and I don’t see this move the Flyers could make as a move that wouldn’t bring on offense.
Los Angeles Kings: The names that have been floating around here are Dustin Brown (who I know the Flyers love), Frolov (who may not be a fit), and currently injured prospect Andrei Loktionov (who the flyers previously are rumored to have tried to grab)
The Hurricanes: Here there are three names I have heard. Eric Staal (essentially a more consistent Jeff Carter, Ray Whitney (who would bring some needed offensive leadership lost when Knuble signed in Washington), and Chad LaRose (who is a very underrated player in my opinion) Of course, the connection of Laviolette to Carolina is interesting and these were his key guys. Laviolette is a coach trying to sell a system to a team on the fly here. It can not be under emphasized how important it is to have a few actual players that know that system and can sell it for you. Players listen to players. I still think that the only reason Ken Hitchcock was fired as Flyers head coach was the loss of Keith Primeau. Keith sold the players on that system.
The Atlanta Thrashers: Of course the move to end all moves would be finding a way to acquire Ilya Kovalchuk. While I can imagine the Flyers getting into that bidding war, I don’t see that happening until about a month from now when Atlanta has to decide if they can or can not move Ilya. If they decide to move him, the Flyers definitely have the right pieces to make that deal. The Flyers have always liked Armstrong and White, but I would imagine that a Thrashers deal would come later. It is possible that they are scouting the Flyers for later.
As to the question: Is Friday D-Day?
Two sources tell me they believe it is now regardless of what happens tomorrow night. I for the most part agree, but again…why Friday?
Friday’s tend to be the day to release controversial news. (Stevens was fired a few Fridays ago)
I am curious if the flyers may be up to something else that doesn’t involve a trade. Maybe a change in the Captaincy to take some pressure off of Mike Richards. The kind of story you would like to bury on a Friday…just my own speculation
more to come..

Eklund is a moron, but I would not be shocked to see Whitney and LaRose moved to Philly. No idea on who would come back.
5 seconds left.
Do you believe in miracles?
YES!!
Briere would only be untouchable from other teams ’cause of his contract. Philly would move him I think.

Even if Eklund had a clue (which he doesn’t)
it would not make any sense for a team to trade for any player who just signed a bazillion year contract extension….

Dwayne “Eklund” Klessel is a washed up keyboard player with a hard on for the Flyers who sits in his basement making up s**t. Because he was very proactive during the lockout, he made a name for himself and has been riding that wave ever since. Also, a dearth of hockey websites covering rumors allows him to be king of the fools on the old interweb.
Eklund's Next Canes/Flyers Breaking Story
Carolina will trade Eric Staal, Brandon Sutter, and Ray Emery for Danny Briere, Riley Cote, and Cam Ward. The deal is flying well with the Flyers brass, so Carolina will also include their 2010 1st round pick.
This may have already been posted but here is Spectors’ reaction to some of these silly rumors. He leads with this:
The approach of the NHL’s holiday trade freeze (December 19-27) has given rise to some very, very stupid trade rumors. Here’s a look at some of the really silly ones and why they won’t happen.
-Eric Staal to the Blues (or anywhere else): The Hurricanes are looking to dump salary and get younger and faster but Staal is the last player they’d move. If anything they want to build around him.
Gleason for the "C" :
Just what do we need to do to make this happen?
