Bryan Rodney Reassigned to Albany
The Carolina Hurricanes reassigned defenseman Bryan Rodney to Albany this afternoon. It is expected that Tim Gleason will be ready to play against the New York Rangers on Monday night.
This move means that Rodney remains behind Jay Harrison and Brett Carson on the Carolina depth chart, a position many fans might not agree with. While Harrison and Carson have played well, Rodney is better on the powerplay and has scored more points per game played. The Carolina powerplay has thrived recently and is rated the best in the NHL during the month of December.
Time will tell if the reassignment hurts the team's performance while with the man advantage.

It's all good....
We’re seeing a lot of the Albany boys and the mixing/matching going on. We’re rebuilding, and despite it being painful at the moment, I think we are starting to get a glimpse of potential for next year. I wouldn’t be surprise to have Rodney back soon anyway. Pehaps A.Ward gets put on Re-Entry waivers and gets picked up.
Albany Rats on Defense Next Year
The Albany Rats will be everywhere next season, I think. Defense looks something like:
Gleason/Pitkanen
Carson/Rodney [Assuming Corvo traded]
Alberts/McBain/Harrison
It looks to me like Corvo will only be traded if another puck moving defenseman can be obtained. The Albany Rats have really done an excellent job under the circumstances. They bring a high degree of “want to win” with them.
I could see two “former” Rats in the lineup and a third as the 7th defenseman, but I don’t know about three in the opening lineup. I still think the Canes should find one more defenseman that was some NHL experience and ability (unlike AWard on the ability part).
Isn’t that an oximoron? Award has a shit pile of exper. and sucks. rod has a HOF career and sucks. The kids are bringing it every night.
I’d go with as many rats as we can fit. I’d fit a helluva lot more. Don’t figure t hat will happen, but I hope there is a rotations of them. We are already paying them, let’s see what we are paying for!
Buying somebody else at this point is stupid. Shitty performing team in transition is not where you want o bring in a new high dollar guy. Once the trade deadline hits, maybe a more solid structure will appear and then maybe…
On the other hand, how many guys do we have that can fill the teams needs? I think we need to see a lot more Rats before that descision is made..

The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
So, you would like next year’s defense to consist of:
Pitkanen, Gleason, Rodney, Alberts, McBain, Carson, and Harrison?
I like the Rats, but that would be hanging Cam out to dry every night. The only ones that are really defensive are Gleason and Alberts. I would like to see a young defenseman with some experience (like a Coburn or Barker). Then you can play the kids and not be so problematic in your own zone. Have a combination like:
Pitkanen-Coburn or Barker
Rodney-Gleason
Carson-Alberts
McBain or Harrison as your 7th & 8th
Uhhh, not sure what you are smokin’ but the total bypass of Award and Wallin is neat. Not to mention the fact that when the kids are in the D is better. Why you include Harrison is odd. I like the no Ward.
As for hanginf Cam out. Hmmm, not like that ain’t been done over and over so far this year…
And gee, he ain’t always been up to the task, now has he?

I’m not trying to bash Cam, I would just like to see him get a little help. Having a defense next season of half rookies, I just think that would put a lot of pressure on him with their rookie mistakes. All players make mistakes, but rookies usually (and I’m saying usually Paladin) make more than experienced players.

I’m just curious about something, why do all the guys think Corvo is gone after this season?? I don’t see it..
"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
I don’t either. Perhaps prior to his injury, he would have priced himself out of our price range. But now, trading partners would be limited and the amount he’d command in the offseason would be reduced as well. Plus he has a family that is pretty settled here from what I know.
It would be a bit of a stretch if he wants a ton of money or a long-term deal, but I could see JR actively pursuing him more than almost any of the other UFAs.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
I agree the injury has probably cost him some money, but Beauchemin was injuried most of last year and got a $11.4M/3 year deal ($3.8M per). Puck moving defenseman are expensive in this league, especially one’s with a right handed shot.
by PackPride17 on Dec 20, 2009 10:21 PM EST up reply actions
Jim Rutherford tends to trade players who are in the last year of their contract if they want to test the UFA market. Corvo is also 32 years old and Jim Rutherford has said he prefers to go with more youth.
For all the reasons being discussed, I think Corvo will be traded only if another puck moving defenseman with experience has already been obtained via trade. I am fine with Corvo being re-signed. He has put up tremendous defensive minutes for the Hurricanes.
Yeah, I see the Christmas spirit has hit Paladin like a stocking full of bricks. I guess I have a better chance of actually seeing Santa on Friday than Paladin having a positive outlook.
I think Corvo is gone because we are moving toward getting younger, he would probably want a decent pay increase (IMO around $3.5M) and sometimes change is good (unlike this season, where we brought almost everyone back).
by PackPride17 on Dec 20, 2009 10:17 PM EST up reply actions
yeah but then look at a team like LA who has too many young players and they may be looking to add some veterans to their roster. I think it’s all about balance, I think keeping Corvo will be in the best interest of the team, he can certainly help develop the younger d-men.
"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
That’s exactly why I am in favor of keeping a few veterans (not all, but a few). There is something to be said for leadership and experience.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
We would still have veterans in Pitkanen, Gleason, and Alberts. Again, I would also like to get a trade for a young d-Man with some NHL experience.
I would actually rather have the kids learn from a player like Gleason than Corvo. Joe is a good player, but like Staal, his confidence is shaken often and I don’t want the young guys learning that. The kids will make mistakes and Gleason’s way would be to move on and work harder. Corvo’s way would be to dwell on the mistake.
by PackPride17 on Dec 20, 2009 10:32 PM EST up reply actions
believe me you will find no bigger supporter of Gleason than me, but when you throw in Pitkanen with his “glass-like” physique and he’s out for any amount of time you are looking at a much more inexperienced blue-line, much like what we have dealt with so far this season…
"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
I wasn’t talking about Corvo specifically as being the source of leadership and experience, but I get your point. Personally, I don’t consider guys like Gleason, Pits and Albe veterans yet. Whitney, Walker and Wallin are veterans IMO.
I do think that Gleason has the most potential to mentor young guys like Rodney and Carson. But I think we still need guys to mentor the second generation of leaders so to speak. The Staals, Sutters, Gleasons and Pitkanens of the team still need a slap of reality every once in a while. And guys like Whitney (he’s the best example I can come up with) are the ones that will do it.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
I get what your saying. I really think we should trade Whitney at the deadline for a draft pick and then resign him this offseason to a 2 year deal. Something like $3M the first year, $1M the second. I also wouldn’t be against resigning Wallin to a 1 year deal if we could get the price around or under $1M. I don’t think he’s great, but I don’t think he horrible either. He’s a third pairing guy that doesn’t play a lot of minutes, but could fill in when injuries occur. Again, that is if we can get the numbers right on Wallin.
by PackPride17 on Dec 20, 2009 10:44 PM EST up reply actions
Interesting idea on trading and then resigning Whitney. I wonder what the rules about that are. I think what will be important this offseason will be striking a balance between bringing in youth but not completely throwing away everyone over the age of 30. I’d hate for JR to go to that extreme.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
I don’t think there are any rules against it, he is an UFA and can sign with anyone.
Prospal was traded from Tampa to Philly a couple years ago and then resigned with Tampa that offseason.

Harrison v. Ward and Wallin
Harrison has better stats in 17 games than A. Ward and Wallin. He is playing far better after returning from Albany. I prefer Rodney, Carson, and Alberts over Harrison if I had to choose.
I never had an issue with him even prior to him going to Albany. Considering what his role is (7th d-man or lower), he’s done fairly well. That being said, I would have kept Rodney over him if Gleason is in fact coming back.

I think it still a cap balancing act. Rodney makes slightly more than Harrison and we are balancing on the edge of the cap.
Actually nhlnumbers has Harrison having a bigger cap hit than Rodney. Rodney makes more in actual salary though.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
My bad, the information I had said that Harrison had a $500K cap hit and Rodney had a $550K cap hit.
That’s their salaries. Cap hit is $415K for Harrison and $376K for Rodney.
I’m never entirely sure on the accuracy of numbers from the internet so we could both be wrong!
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
I see what your seeing now. The numbers I listed are their cap hits if they played the entire year. The numbers you are looking at represent their cap hit from the days they have already played through the end of the season. So, Rodney does make slightly more than Harrison, but Harrison’s cap hit is higher because he has more time to date in the NHL.
I would have kept Rodney over Harrison, but maybe Daniels wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Well I wouldn’t go that far HM. I mean he doesn’t get to call up JR at home and demand that they send him player X by such and such a time or else. But he does help the coaches/front office decide who comes up by providing some scouting information. I could also see him politely inquiring as to when so and so might return if we had a few days off.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
I like how Rodney and Carson have been playing. I would have thought Harrison would be sent back and Rodney would stay. Rodney has five assists in ten games. Rodney will catch Brind’Amour in total points and possibly in goals this year.
The team has a much, much better won-loss record when the Albany Rats are on the team. Accordingly, I wonder if Wallin will be put on injured reserve. Supposedly, there are going to be many more trades in February than normal due to the Olympic Break.
As soon as the money works out, Wallin, A.Ward, and Brind’Amour ought to sit to make room for the Albany Rats.
dont agree
I think Rodney looked great. A quick skater – not to mention his passing and breakouts from our own end are responsible for several of the goals in the last few games. Carson looks decent but seems to lack confidence. I don’t have an issue with Harrison – he’s looking much better than before he went to Albany.
I’d rather have Rodney than Ward on the backend. Only thing missing would be Wards blocked shots.

Off topic
This is off topic, but a post brought this up yesterday. Someone said that with all of the money coming off the Canes books this season, they could go sign a good UFA or resign a couple of players like Whitney and Cullen. Here is what the Canes cap looks like so far for next year.
They currently have $18.63M coming off the books. Whitney, Cullen, Walker, Yelle, Corvo, Ward, Wallin, Harrison, Legace, Conboy, and Leighton’s half. Tanabe’s and Hamilton’s buyout also comes off the books.
They currently have $41.46M committed to 13 players and Kaberle’s buyout. Staal, Ruutu, Brind’Amour, Cole, Samsonov, Jokinen, LaRose, Sutter, Kostopoulos, Pitkanen, Gleason, Alberts, and Ward. So, to fill out their roster they need between 4/5 forwards, 4/5 defenseman, and a goalie. So based on the current cap (which may go up or down a little), the Canes have $15.34M to spend. This was an uncommon year for the Canes, spending all the way up to the cap. I really see PK only authorizing a budget around $52M, maybe $53M. Let’s say $53M, so now our available money for 10 players is $11.54M.
Here is a list of possible fill-ins within our organization.
Boychuk – $1.225 cap hit
Bowman – $0.875 cap hit
Dwyer – $0.500 cap hit
Tlusty – a RFA after this season ($0.941 cap hit – minimum 10% RFA raise)
Samson – a RFA after this season ($0.543 cap hit – minimum 10% RFA raise)
Carson – a RFA after this season ($0.575 cap hit – minimum 10% RFA raise)
Rodney – a RFA after this season ($0.605 cap hit – minimum 10% RFA raise)
McBain – $0.850 cap hit
Peters – a RFA after this season ($0.550 cap hit – minimum 10% RFA raise)
Taylor Hall (project draft pick) – the last two #1’s have a cap hit of $3.725 and $3.75, so lets just say $3.7 cap hit
Lets also say we resign Whitney to a $2.0 cap hit
With Whitney, Boychuk, Tlusty, Dwyer, Hall, Rodney, Carson, McBain, and Peters filling out the roster (that still leaves an open spot for a 7th defenseman). They would account for $10.95M, leaving very little of PK’s budget for additional free agents.
Now, there are ways to gets some more money like trading Samsonov and/or LaRose. We could also buyout Brind’Amour and save some cash. We would probably have to eat about $1M to $1.2M over the next two seasons for Brindy, but we would get about $2.4M in cap space back.
I’m not trying to be negative, just pointing out that unless something is done, we are not going to have much room to sign anybody. That’s why I feel that Cullen and Corvo will not be resigned and we will not be a player in the UFA market.
So Rod again is the black hole this team needs to shed….
Ironic how that is so bad for some to contemplate, yet so friggin obvious a chicken could grasp it…
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
UNLESS like rumor has it they drop the cap next year by 8 or 9 million, then your budget goes to hell…

If it goes that low, there will be few teams in the NHL who can make the cap….what then? (I wonder if there’s a floor on maximum % drop per year? CBA experts – please chime in)

Yeah it is easy to forget that if we indeed get a top 3 overall pick the rookie will cost about $3.5-4 million a year, 3 year rookie contract. However this should also indicate the importance this player will have, this could be a relatively low contract for a potential superstar player ready to contribute next year.
Hall or Seguin could easily turn out to be the top-6 forward we need. If they do anything I’d shore up the defense with a young potential top 4 defender like Cam Barker, Braydon Coburn, maybe even Marc Staal if NY got desperate enough.
If I had to rank those players, in which one I would want the most. I would put Coburn #1, Staal #2, Barker #3.
I think Barker would be the easiest to acquire followed be Coburn, then Staal.
I would actually really like Staal to pair up with Pits. I think that would be a real nice top pair and allow for Gleason to play with and mentor the kids.

Budget for Next Season
For the reasons you discuss, I think Brind’Amour will be bought out — for a cap savings of about $2.4 million. Also think LaRose will be traded for a savings of $1.9 million. I think there will be an effort to trade Samsonov. Buying out Brind’Amour and trading LaRose clears enough money to find a an impact power forward and a puck moving defenseman.
If Cullen and Corvo are not re-signed, the Hurricanes will trade them for prospects or draft picks, although a Cullen for Cam Barker trade is a possibility.
LaRose’s cap hit is only $1.7M, but anyway. Rod’s and LaRose’s savings would only be $4.1M. You might could get a impact power forward or puck moving defenseman, but not both. Unfortunately, $2M in the NHL now gets you an average player, like LaRose (just picking on him, I really love his heart. If he was only 6’2 and 210lbs – he would be a all-star).
or maybe a Ruutu (who’s not quite that big I guess)
Gleason for the "C" :

by hockeymomof2 on Dec 20, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions
You are right. His salary next year is $1.9 million and a cap hit of $1.7. My mistake.
The $4.1 million could go for a player of the caliber of Nathan Horton for a $4.0 million cap hit or a player like Shawn Matthias for $630,000 and then a more expensive puck moving defenseman; but you are correct that top tier power forwards are expensive and hard to find.
Horton for you must be like Coburn for me.
Horton would be a nice pick-up, but I don’t believe Florida would trade him to a Divisional rival.
The bottom line IMO is that we overpaid for “our two stars.” I am a huge Staal fan, but I believe his cap hit should have been in the $7M range. JR signed him before the market crashed, when the cap was jumping a couple of million each year. Hindsight is 20/20. I also believe Cam should have been more in line with Miller and Fleury, about $5M. Anyway, now we have two very expensive, but very good players. It is possible to do that, but then you become top line heavy (like Tampa and Washington). If this is the direction we are going, your 4th line and 3rd pairing defenseman can probably only make around $750K each.
Braydon Coburn -- sounds like a player the Hurricanes need
Maybe Larose for Coburn would work,

Scouting Report
Assets
* Moves very well for a 6-5, 220-pound defender and owns both offensive and all-around potential. Is capable of logging big minutes and playing on either side of the ice.
Flaws
* Doesn’t use his huge frame enough to his advantage, which limits his effectiveness. Is somewhat raw in the offensive zone. Needs to display more consistency in all facets of the game.
Career Potential
* Big-minute defenseman.
I don’t believe this is how Brind’Amour’s theoretical buyout would work. His contract extension was signed in July 2006. He was born in August 1970. So, he was 35 when he signed the extension.
I’m pretty sure this means his entire salary counts against the cap for the length of his contract, whether he’s bought out or even if he retires.
I think only if he retires, if we buy him out, it would be for 2/3 of his contract

Nope, ’fraid the entire contract counts toward the cap.
From this FAQ of the collective agreement (and other sources I can see) comes this sentence found in the Contract Buyouts section:
The remainder of this explanation applies to buyouts that took place after July 29, 2005, and assumes the player was not 35 or older when signing his SPC (in which case a buyout does not reduce the cap hit).
Yup, that’s the way it rolls out.
Elsker, that’s twice in one day, throw me a bone and say Award rocks or there is a plan B…This agreein’ crap is distasteful..
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
Ummmm….you’re right that agreeing is distasteful. LOL!
Sorry, but that’s the best I can do unless you give me something sane to work with.
But, if PK is spending below the cap (and I think he will be), then having some phantom cap budget on top of the real cash budget is really not a problem.
Remember how JR arranges his signings. Every players actual salary is going up next year except for Rod’s. So everyone’s cap hit is actually less than what their really making, except for Rod and Sutter (Sutter’s because of bonuses).
That’s true, but somehow or another nhl numbers has next season’s under-contract salary budget (with bonuses) at about a million under the current cap hit for that season.
I don’t think the two budgets will be badly mis-matched. But, PK could understandably count the $2M out-of-pocket for a potential buyout against what he’s willing to spend on salaries for ‘10-’11.
Do you interpret that to mean that Brind’Amour can be bought out for 2/3rds of his salary over two years, but the cap hit is still $3,600,000?
Yes, I do.
And, this is why maybe we really should wish the man well, and hope he could fulfill a role for the team, in that all that is really going to happen is clearing a roster spot for a $2M payout over 2 years on the side (with newfound Lavi money? LOL!)
Thank God the insane and inane Elsker is back.
Rod is the shit heap of the NHL. Nothign will change that and the barnicle he is on the ass of this ship will be here foir awhile. He sucks, he is done. Any other notion is idiocy.
Balls in your court. I didn’r like agreein’ any more than you did and anybody that would support the worst player in the friggin’ league get’s my vote as out of touch.
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
Situation A: Buy out Brind’Amour next season for $2M cash over 2 years with a $3.6M cap hit.
Situation B: Play Brind’Amour next season for $3M cash over 1 year with a $3.6M cap hit.
So, only real benefit of pursuing Situation A is now having $1M extra to spend on a replacement fourth line player (at the expense of also having a $1M cash flow increase).
Therefore, the decision matrix says all other intangibles aside, is there a better fourth line player to be had for $1M or under?
Maybe. But, what cost are the intangibles, if so?
This, I believe, is how management looks at their options.
I like the way you think. The only problem is; if you put Samson in his place on the 4th line, his cap hit is like $4.1M (because you’re including Rod’s).

I just noticed that Rodney is a RFA with arbitration rights after the season. Maybe JR is trying to keep his playing time down so if he elects to go to arbitration, his salary number will be lower than if he plays a lot in the “N” and puts up some points.
On a totally unrelated note – just heard that Taylor Hall hurt his knee in the first period last night in Sweden… they kept him out for the rest of the game for ‘precautionary’ reasons. Our future is already busy getting injured…
