Let me start off by saying that I'm not suggesting the Canes do this or not do this. I'm just putting it out there as a possiblity. I recently read a rumor that Dion Phaneuf is on the trade block. It said that the Flames have spent a lot of money on their defense, but are in need of a top 6 forward. With little cap room to do anything, they would be willing to part with Phaneuf for the right price. So here is a trade proposal to Calgary.
Again, I am just putting this out there and not suggesting this be done. I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Would you even like to bring Phaneuf to Carolina? Would he be a good fit? If so, what would you give up for him?
Calgary: Calgary is almost in one of those "all-in" moments. Their team is getting older, certain contracts are expiring, and they are near the cap again this year (remember last year when they weren't even able to dress a full squad). Whitney would provide them with a top 6 forward, someone that could play on their top line. I think his playmaking ability would be a nice compliment to Iginla and Jokinen. Ward would be able to fill in on their 3rd defensive pairing. Really, they would have to take some salary back to make it work. Ward could probably play little minutes on their 3rd group and provide some more cup experience to the team. With those two players, the Flames would also save about 500K of cap space. Their contracts expire at the end of season, so they would have more flexability ($6.5M - getting rid of Phaneuf's contract) to sign UFA's or resign a player like Jokinen. I would also include Bowman, because they would probably at least want a player that is cheap and will be around longer than this season. They also would get our 2nd round pick. Calgary has no 1st or 2nd this year because of the Jokinen trade last year, our 2nd will probably be equal to a late 1st.
Carolina: We would get a young defenseman that has a very good game and even more potential. He has offensive ability and is also a physical force. He does still need work in his own zone, has a big contract, and from what i have heard could be a distraction in the locker room. We would give up one of our best players in Whitney, but we could resign him after the season. I'm sure no one would care if Ward moves on. Bowman is a kid that was some potential, but he seems to behind other kids like Bowman and Tlusty in the pecking order. We would also lose our 2nd round pick (probably 1st in the 2nd round). If we deem this a weak draft class, then we're probably only giving up a role player anyway. So, since this season is really over and we are not going to the playoffs. We would really only be giving up Bowman (a potential 2nd or 3rd line winger) and a 2nd (maybe a 3rd line player) for Phaneuf (a potential impact defenseman who should play in our top 2).
For the third time, I'm just throwing this out there. Let me know what you think.
