McKenzie: Canes Deal Philippe Paradis To Toronto For Jiri Tlusty
According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the Carolina Hurricanes have dealt 2009 first-round pick Philippe Paradis to Toronto for 2006 13th overall pick Jiri Tlusty.
Tlusty has 74 games of NHL experience with the LEafs, scoring 10 goals and adding 10 assists. He has been dominant at the AHL level, with 66 points (25-41-66) in 66 game last season with the Marlies, and eight goals and seven assists in 19 games this season.
Paradis has eight goals and 11 assists in 26 games with Shawinigan of the QMJHL.

Well, you know, with all those extra healthy D-men we’ve got, it’s time to even it out with some forwards. =D
Or trade a recent draft pick that they were pretty high on…. for one who seemingly hasn’t developed into anything…..

Cory… We all watched the draft together…. We followed the coverage…
Don’t you remember… I remember… I ordered a pineapple pizza n the middle of it and got picked on by everyone here :-)

Then they saw him up close at conditioning camp, and surely have watched him some in the Q this year.

Any time you take someone projected by ISS to be a late 2nd rounder at best with your 27th pick, it would be nice to know you aren’t going to give up on him so early. We really could have used that Ferraro kid this year.

Yea, this doesn’t make any sense at all. The kid hasn’t even play one full season with us and we trade him for one of Toronto’s scrubs who never developed?
Still not a crook!
He plays in Juniors still…. what in the world???
by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Dec 3, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions
He’s a PPG player with the Marlies. He likely is a AAAA player but he never really got a decent shot with the Leafs. He seems to have serious confidence issues but if Maurice is going to play him (and not like he did when he was in Toronto – ie 7 min a night on the 4th line) you’ll at least get a decent look at him.

Funny
I posted the link in the Fan Post area before I saw this…. I don’t see where this is going either…
Tlusty is a very talented player … didn’t fit the Burke mold. Paradis was a reach, IMO, where we picked him. This could work out well.
is this an admission that drafting Paradis was a mistake? I’m confused myself

or at least he’s a few years away. The purpose of drafting Paradis was because he was a banger, big power forward who could score and bang bodies

I am not sure this sucks
It looks like an even-money trade, other than the two year age difference.
I just started a new season on NHL10 last night with a fantasy draft (it is how I ease the pain of the Canes sucking, pretend it doesn’t exist in videogame land) and ended up with Tlusty on my third line.
So this is funny to me.
I drafted him in 2006 in my keeper fantasy league ;) So I’ve followed him.

One 1st round pick for another.
I don’t see this as flushing the pick.
I know everyone is a little short due to the how this season has played out but jeez guys can we back away from the ledge a little on this trade?
A 2009 first round pick for a 2006 first round pick.
Ask yourselves this: Would you be happy if on draft day last year, before we made our pick, we had traded our 1st rounder for Tlusty? I didn’t think so…
I am not upset about trading Paradis for Tlusty. In fact, I’m quite pleased with it. It’s a good deal. I am upset with drafting Paradis to begin with. I had a near meltdown on draft day when we did it, but I shelved those emotions and decided to see how it panned out. Well here we are 5 months later, and we have a trade that essentially is admitting that we did foul up the pick.
Semi agreed on that point.
I wouldn’t be stunned to see Tlusty never see a Canes jersey. (shipped off to another team, not stuck in the AHL)
Fair enough … but we’re not talking Jeff Heerema here. Tlusty has a good shot.

Would you consider Sutter a “slow grower” then too? Last year he had 6 points in 50 games. This year 10 points in 18 and looking like one of our best out on the ice currently.
Last year Tlusty had 4 points in 14 NHL games and 66 points in 66 AHL games. Next year or end of this year??
Just saying I wouldn’t give up on him before he even gets here. He is far from a bust.
He also finished the year in Albany….

Looks like JR has strated…
Now interesting, who has to be thrown out of the lineup to make a room for Jili if he is expected to play in NHL immediately. Would it be Yelle?
And BTW, Phelippe was drafted in the 1st Round (27th overall) – how does it correlate to the concept of good 1st rounders? :
Thoughts?
All above is my personal opinion.
Thanks,
Andy_S
The link says Tlusty will report to Albany, so nobody sits for him yet. Hopefully JR’s got somebody a flight booked out of town, though. Actually, several somebodies.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
Why is everyone so mad?
Paradis was projected as a 2nd-3rd rounder, it was a big surprise we took him so early and he has not even played well in the QMJHL this year (19 points in 26 games).
Tlusty is an attractive prospect, he had 66 points in 66 games in the AHL last year and is projected to be a sniper. He can immediately help the Rats and or the Canes now.
Furthermore he is a center which to me fuels the fire that Cullen will be traded and soon.
You have to build for the future slowly, you guys can’t expect JR to make one huge trade and BAM all our problems are solved. This immediately makes us a younger team, adds a 21 year old with a lot of highly skilled offensive potential, and adds a new face.
I say this is a step in the right direction.
18-year-old QMJHLer for 21-year-old AHLer doesn’t make us younger. Someone older getting shipped out of town for a pick, then Tlusty coming up, will.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
Competition is fierce for WJC spots in Canada. Angelo Esposito didn’t make it until last year, and he was once considered a can’t-miss high pick.

From ISS, in Tlusty’s draft year:
Skill: Very good in tight…Great puck skills…Uses a very short stick…Can take a hit…Looks like a warrior. Hard guy to play against.
Scouting Report: After his pin-up performance at the 2006 IIHF World U18 Championship in Sweden, Thusty ends the year ranked #8th by ISS for the upcoming 2006 NHL draft. He had an impressive second half this season. He is a well-rounded
player who hits, makes plays and scores goals. He sees the ice well and contributes defensively.
Tlusty gained a lot of valuable experience playing senior hockey with Kladno in the Czech league for the 2005-06 season. Was named captain on the Czech Under-18 team. A leader on and off the ice, and although we’d like to see him lengthen his stride, he plays a robust style with great hands to match. He was difficult to contain and was strong on his skates and simply imposed his will on other teams. If he reports to the Soo for the 2006/07 season, he will be a force in that league and should become a legitimate
star in the OHL.
NHL Potential: 1st line Power winger, provides character and leadership qualities.
Style compares to: Ryan Smyth
He is not even close to Ryan Smyth. The dude has skill, but appears lazy at times. This description is not exactly the most honest one of him
Fairweather fans can go to hell
well, you figure the biggest stage for international players is the IIHF tourneys – those guys will all haul ass for their country, especially right at draft year. Otherwise you have to take this and that with a grain of salt.
ISS’ “Compares To:” always shoot for the moon. I don’t disagree with your assessment.

Maybe this isn't a short term move
JR is frustrated, but he has made it clear he isn’t replacing Mo. Add to that what he said about dumping a ‘handfull of guys today if he could’ makes me think that anyone with a contract expiring this summer is toast.
Since we have talked about veterans being worth a lot more the closer we get to the deadline, maybe JR is filling some holes for next year on the cheap while he waits for the big trades to open up.
Early bird you know.
The Canes might have turned a bit on Paradis after seeing him at conditioning camp, who knows. (shrugs) He did not exactly turn any heads there.

I dont see this as an odd move at all.
We traded away a guy who has nevel played in the nhl for a guy that has….both of em 1st rounders…neither of them have amazing potential (per the scouts). The difference is that one guy is ready to come in and play and one is not.
Pretty evidenty that this move was made so that Tlusty WILL play here and one of our vets will be shipped off.
Tlusty WILL play here and one of our vets will be shipped off.
From the sound of things, that won’t happen until next season.
Rutherford said that Tlusty would be in contention for a potential recall later this season, but won’t be counted on for regular duty until next year.
hard to argue with what he said…but we all know what comes out of his mouth and what happens can be different, and has been
ex. when he comes out and says “coach is safe” and then 2 weeks later coach is gone
another – “we arent looking to make any big trades” 2 days later jwilliams is gone and cole is back
<neither of them have amazing potential (per the scouts)>
The same scouts that less than 6 months ago thought Paradis was talented enough to merit drafting an entire round earlier than he was ranked?
I’m sorry, I’m generally pretty mild but time after time we see the Canes failing to properly utilize the draft. The one improvement they made is now suffering behind the bench with Maurice. I’m sick of it.
Tlusty
I had been collecting a list of potential power forwards and had Jiri Tlusty on my list. According to reports he has great speed, excellent hands, and is a natural scorer.I posted about it already so I won’t re-post in this link. I liked Paradis’ potential, but he was still likely to be two years away from the NHL.
It seems to me that with Sutter, Boychuk, Bowman, Tlusty, and the entry draft pick (somewhere between #1 and #5 in all likelihood), there are five spots taken in the top nine. It seems inarguable that Jim Rutherford is on his way toward transitioning the team toward younger, faster, (and I keep hoping) larger players. I looks to me like Staal, Ruutu, Jokinen, and Cole or Cullen are staying; but that is a pure guess. I can’t see any of those nine being put on a fourth line with the possible exception of Bowman.
All true Doug … tho Bowman would stay in the A before being brought here to play fourth-line minutes, I think. Also, Paradis was prolly more like three, four, five years from getting here, I bet.

His speed is NHL-level but it’s not “beat the defender to the outside” fast.

This is the key to Rutherford's thinking (such as it is)
From the Branecky piece
Although the Hurricanes have traded young talent to get young talent, General Manager Jim Rutherford said that his team would benefit from having a more NHL-ready prospect and that Tlusty’s skill set better suits the organization going forward.
"They’re two different types of players," said Rutherford. "We need to score more goals and we need to have skill. In our opinion, Philippe is more along the lines of a power forward and Jiri is more skilled to where we project him being able to put up points in our top six.
"We’re going through a stretch now where we’re a low-scoring team," added Rutherford. "You can have all the bigger, physical guys that you want, but if you can’t score enough goals it’s not going to do you any good. In this case, I’m dealing with trying to put a player in our lineup by the start of next season that’s going to be able to help produce points."
JR doesn’t regard him as a power forward – I thought of you first ADog.

not as nasty as James Neal, but more in that mold than a hulking Antropov type … he’s a PF like Cole is … maybe not as physical, but strong on his skates when carrying the puck.

That (strong bodied sim to Cole) sounds like how they described Paradis, IIRC. But this guy has better hands….

This is how you end up picking early in the draft rounds. Play at the NHL level what is probably AHL talent at the moment, once you open up a roster spot for them.
Also, since we’re going to be stripping the Albany River Rats of some of their major talent, they’re going to need reinforcements, later this year and next. That’s more likely Tlusty than Paradis on a short-term basis.
I do see it as a good fit for both orgs. Burke wants a chance at a big-body power forward (something Paradis is not now, but may be some day) and is in no particular hurry for it to happen. We want someone with some hands that can put it in the net, and ideally sooner, instead of later.
It’s first-rounder for first-rounder, different roles, and two years apart on the development curve. Seems like the essence of what can be characterized as a good trade for both orgs.
I have followed Tlusty as a possible power forward for the Hurricanes, although I had wished he was 6’3" and heavier. I think Jim Rutherford prefers the Ruutu, Cole, Tlusty style of power forward — strong and skilled, but not hulking beasts. I had hoped and continue to hope that the Hurricanes will add a Bryan Bickell kind of power forward. There could be room on the fourth line for that kind of player. Kirill Kabanov is 6’3" and can play the role of a fast, skilled, and natural scorer power forward. Taylor Hall is 6’2" and can also play that role as well. Next year the Hurricanes are going to be crazy fast on the ice.
I’m really hoping if we do end up with the decision they take Hall over Seguin. Both are amazing players but the deal breaker for me is that Taylor Hall is bigger and a natural Left Winger while Seguin is a Center. I can certainly see them opting for Seguin however as he is a homegrown talent (Karmanos owns the team he plays on currently, the Plymoth Whalers). I’m really hoping they can fight that urge and look towards the future of Staal/Hall.
If he is a Whaler....
…then he is ours. Thats simply how this team works. Personally, if the draft were today, I would take the Russian kid Kirill Kabanov.

Foreshadowing a Bigger Trade
What was most interesting to me is that Tlusty is naturally a center and they expect him to contribute to the team this or next year.
To me that just screams that Cullen will be gone soon. I’d say a Cam Barker for Matt Cullen + deal is right around the corner (hopefully also a Aaron Ward to CLB for a bag of pucks shortly after that). Shoring up our positions before we trade players away seems logical.
Tlusty is listed in three places on the Canes website as a Left Wing (not a center)
Paradis is a center.
GO CANES! Go Heels!
I could easily be mistaken, but I think the word on Tlusty is that he can play all three forward positions. It does seem that the Hurricanes envision using him as a left wing. To me it is interesting that Rutherford has started obtaining players like Jokinen and Tlusty who can play all three forward positions.
I think you’re right on all 3 Forward positions. I saw that too. Maybe on the link when JR spoke with Mike at 99.9 (someone posted it below)..
I’m also noticing another European. No new Russians yet. (just by listening to Samsonov, his persona seems quite different from the Malkin/Ovechkin/Semin variety)

I agree 100%. It sounds like somebody is about to leave the Hurricanes premises. It might be LaRose; but Cullen or Whitney seem more likely to me.
Probably Cullen… Sucks…. I’d rather not see him or Whitney go…. but that is pretty much all we have to trade…. (whitney has a no-trade clause)

I’ve been pretty down on the whole friggin org. since last summer, but I can’t believe they would be this bad and at this point and all they do is swap some minor players that don’t equate out to squat on the money end. I like the move. I never did like the Paradis draft pick, so I’m biased, but it looks like Tlusty will be able to contribute next season. I’d like to see if he can develop some chemistry with Boychuk and some of our other rising peeps. But really, all this is for getting someone who can play sooner than Paradis. I mean we need help now, but there’s a big difference in 1 season and 3-4 seasons. And offense? c’mon. Now we need to draft a d-man with a big accurate shot from the point (I can’t believe I’m talking about the draft in December…)
It was known at the time that pick was made that McBain was headed for Univ. of Wisconsin, so JR knew he would be developed well and allowed to properly age under someone else’s watch and off a pro contract’s ticking timeclock. Good thing, since we apparently had no clue how to develop a defenseman on our own at the time.
Time to take him out of the oven soon, me thinks.
Mcbain and bowman r my two favorite cane propects. Mcbain has a certain on ice demeanor that I love. He could turn onto a Wesley guiding presence one day long into the future

Tlusky and the Impact on Lines in 2010-2011
I started working on lines for 2010-2011 to see how the Tlusky trade impacts the team. I assumed that Sutter would stay in the top nine. I also assumed that the Hurricanes drafted somewhere between #1 and #5; and assumed the Hurricanes took Taylor Hall (could be Tyler Seguin or Kirill Kavanov as well). I also assumed that Boychuk and Bowman were going to play in the top nine. Given those assumptions, LaRose, Samsonov, and Whitney are not kept.
For my lines, I assumed in some that Cole was kept; and in other versions that Cullen was kept. Defensively, I have assumed that Corvo is re-signed, but that Aaron Ward and Wallin are not kept.

Still – you didn’t explain what happened to Brind’Amour, ADog. (there are some here for whom this is a sensitive subject)
When you say Walker, Cullen, Yelle. Whitney traded to you mean not re-signed (they are all UFA’s next summer), or that they’re gone before the trade deadline? You’re sure clean house. Maybe more than I’m comfortable with, however fascinating it may be.

What is About to Happen
It’s all guesswork. I have been reading various blogs, and listening to the tone of what Jim Rutherford has said as well as his words. I am also going on comments made to me last year about the overall goal of the Hurricanes organization being one of building a team that competes for the Stanley Cup year after year. Still I admit I could be 180 degree off.
My belief is that Brind’Amour will gracefully retire after this season. I don’t think he can take another year of being disgusted with his own play. I think the following players will be traded either in Januay or at the trade deadline:
1. Walker;
2. LaRose;
3. Whitney;
4. Cole;
I think Yelle will either be traded or will not be re-signed. My gut belief is that Cullen will be kept because he has speed and scoring ability. Cullen also has the defensive abilities to take on the opposing team’s #1 forwards. I suspect. I really like the grit and physicality that Cole has shown this year. If I were Rutherford, I’d be really torn about trading him. Truthfully, if I were Rutherford, I would not trade Cole because it is so hard to find fast, strong power forwards.
Whitney would be a hard person for me to trade if I were Rutherford, but assessing the long term team’s needs, I would probably have to put the long term good of the team ahead of my personal admiration for Whitney. I think Rutherford was 100% serious when he said there were a handful of players he would move now if he could. I also continue to read about the faith Rutherford has in Boychuk and Bowman. If one assumes that those players are ready next year, they are going to take the place of veterans.
thank you A-Dog. I personaly think you should be GM of this team, you definately got a knack for it.

I really appreciate the comment. I know zero about hockey, I think. Jim Rutherford has one of the most difficult jobs I can imagine. He brings in players he likes and respects. If they don’t perform, he is blamed. If things go well, fans ask why he didn’t make that trade or draft pick earlier. When players he likes personally let him down, he has to take steps that could end their careers.
I admire the way he keeps respectful attitudes toward the players. Many NHL GMs are tyrants. I am glad he is the way he is.
I think that we all are so used to feeling negative this season…. that we naturally assume that everything is going to blow up in our faces before we see how it actually pans out in the long run…
So I guess… I take back some of the stuff I said…. and will give nakey-boy a chance to prove he can do something other than….. you know… admire his reflection….

"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
This convo started with me setting you on fire and has somehow drifted to you being a stalker. I hope people realize we’re joking…

Watching the Flames vs. Coyotes game, it sounds like they’re in an echo chamber.

This is desperation at its finest
This move speaks to their desperation and lack of understanding as to where this team really is. The style of a Paradis is no longer needed after 2 months of hockey and we now need a kid who hasnt been able to crack the line-up of a currently AWFUL team and dont tell me it is all because of Burky. They have this type of player in their line-up so he isnt going 100% Anaheim yet. This also reeks of Maurice’s input and another flyer on one of his former loves in Toronto. Hope it isnt as incredibly successful as the Harrison love affair.
This is all my fault!
I bet JR that he couldn’t make a worse move than the re-signing of A. Ward. Not only have we wasted a 1st round pick, but I now owe JR $10.
That sneaky b*stard gets me with that one EVERY time…
Sorta like those playoff tickets he sold you two years ago.

I think as tribute you both need to post more often. I’ll be damned (in more ways than one…) if I stand alone as the voice of reason. I dare ya! This place rocks and you all contribute and sure as hell spell better and have better grammar than I do..
So keep it up. It’s a good thing.

Sorry, I don’t want all the Puck Bunnies and Homers at my door with pitchforks and axes. I can take being a " bad fan " but I don’t think I am ready to be a " Dead Fan ".

Sorry....
..Puck Bunnies at the door means a yard full of Clay Aiken and Twilight fans, which means 14 y/o girls, 40+ divorcees, and 14 y/o boys. Not really what I want bang my doors down.
