Howdy folks!
I missed being here for the Vancouver game. Was at a friend’s wedding in Vegas.
I admit I was seriously thinking about getting for Vancouver to win that game, based on my lack of luck at the craps table. But I couldn’t bring myself to bet against the ’Canes. Looks like just the threat of betting against them helped. :)
Well, if you still want to help
find a bookie, start small and bet against the Canes.
Hopefully they’ll go on a great winning streak.
Yeah, you’ll never be the same but hey, isn’t that “taking one for the team”?
When all else fails, read the instruction manual.
I’m not gonna touch that after the broke back mountain thang..

So I’m curious as to how this speed and intensity is learned in the AHL?
It ain’t., bringing the kids up is the only way to prepare them for this kind of fight and get a true evaluation.
There is gonna be some mistakes, but this ain’t the same team as a month ago. If they keep up this level of play I don’t care what the score is, best play I have seen in awhile and I was at Saturdays game.

Keep up the forecheck
Staal’s been working hard in the corners. Keep the rush going but don’t forget your responsibilities if a Dman pinches. MAF has given up a couple juicy rebounds along with the 2 goals.

Realize with Rod scratched you had to go elsewhere with your ire. Just turns out the guy you picked is playing well. But if Sutter costs a goal “that’s how he learns.”
by Cory Lavalette on Dec 7, 2009 8:51 PM EST up reply actions
Well, aren’t you the tool tonight. So Sutter who has better numbers than Staal sucks?
Dude grow up, you are being juvenile. Staals numbers aren’t good, you are Joe stat, fcae it and man up.
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
he has more points than Sutter, stat guy.
by Cory Lavalette on Dec 7, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions
and half as many goals for about 6 million less, Sutter earns his check, Staal don’t. I can’t believe you are defending him like this. This about Staals worst year, wtf?
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
I was right with you the beginning part of the year. He was terrible, pressing and not himself. How you can say he sucks right now must just be stubbornness. It’d be like me saying Rod has played well. He and Whitney are shredding teams right now.
by Cory Lavalette on Dec 7, 2009 9:00 PM EST up reply actions
I respectfully disagree, he has barely more points than a kid, in Sutter. He is supposed to be the THE go to guy. He has improved since his return, but he’s more of a support role player now, not THE man. Staal HAS to be the 700# gorilla, there just isn’t anybody else that can do it on the Canes squad. And my opinion is he still isn’t doing it. he’;s coming along, he’s contributed some assists, but for taking the most shots of anybody on the team his goal production sucks and that’s what he get’s paid for. Ro make goals. I like the assists, but I want Staal to do like he did the Cup year or like he took over when Rod went down. He can be and needs to be a dominant force.
A
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
He needs to score, for sure. But as long as he gets two assists a night, i could care less. It’s tough to be a dominant player on a crap team. Ask Lecavalier.
I’m not out to pick a fight … I just want you to realize you often sound like Randy Quaid in “Major League.” I just hope you get a point where you cheer again instead of being down on everyone all the time.
by Cory Lavalette on Dec 7, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions
I concede most of that and today I cheered as Rod got scratched. I can give you the manifesto of crap I’d like to see happen, but have over the course of several months. Wallin must go, he’s out again, too. Brining up the kids, trim down the salary, Binky being among them. Though after getting Rod out of the line up, Staal stepping up is next on my list. Then static lines for 2 periods a night along with rotating the Rats through. as many and as often is possible.
I could go on, but I know you’ve heard it before.
A
The Canes are like a box of expired chocolates......
that’ll come in time … I believe JR that there aren’t deals to be made right now. We’ll probably have to wait until closer to the deadline. I hated they picked Cole over Williams .. brutal deal, even tho it helped last year.
by Cory Lavalette on Dec 7, 2009 9:20 PM EST up reply actions
Oh I agree (the Willy deal sucked and I’m skeptical to how much Cole added), i just don’t think at any time we are going to have the strong hand in a trade. Unless they go for the prospects, that’s why I push so hard to get them up, not as a showcase to other teams but as an opportunity to show they belong. Ratiionaly I don’t expect them all to stay, though. Gonna be a slew of spots open, hope we retain a bunch. I do think we need a sniper or a machine like Booth.

I love watching those old-time goalies (sad that 1991 is now “old time”…makes me feel old). The way they flopped around, it’s amazing that they stopped anything at all. No way Gretzky scores 92 goals on today’s goalies.
Legace reminds me of an early 90s goalie…his game is all reflex, coming way out the bottom of the circles to cut off the angle. So different from Ward’s compact, technical efficiency.

Love Sutter … this isn’t Staal vs. Sutter for me. It is for you. These guys are all on the same team when I watch.
by Cory Lavalette on Dec 7, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions
Not my comparison … I was saying how you chalk up some player’s errors or mistakes to sucking, others to “learning.” Everything is a double-standard for your favorites, which is fine. Just don’t expect everyone to agree. I was in Columbus when Sutter was drafted … and Bowman, Terry, Bellemore. I probably haven’t followed a draft class closer. I have a spot for all those guys.
by Cory Lavalette on Dec 7, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions
Sutter
When Sutter gets matched up with wing like Tlusty, it is going to be crazy. Sutter blew by everybody. 6’ 3" and fast with moves and great hands is a good, good thing to watch on the ice.
Next Year in My Mind --
I’m already in a Next Year state of mind. We get a glimpse now of what speed can do when Brind’Amour is scratched and the players can run with Pittsburgh.
really a testament to how much he worked this offseason. huge huge improvement in his skating.
by Cory Lavalette on Dec 7, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions
Power Skating Regime
Whatever workouts and coaching Sutter got over the off-season, there are number of players who ought to sign up. I think Ruutu is amazing; but is still recovering from knee injuries early in his career. If Ruutu were to engage in that kind of power skating for one more step of step and acceleration, he’d be the team’s next superstar. He is fast enough now; but if he had blazing speed, it would be ridiculous.
there was a time when he was a burner .. lemme find the clip.

The strangest thing is that Mo hasn’t stapled him to the bench after that Crosby goal.
First scratching Brindy, now this. I’m not sure what alien has colonized Mo’s brain, but I’m cautiously optimistic about its style.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
Actually, I think both "helped" Crosby
Sutter thinking he’s cutting off Cindy from a shot and Manny thinking Sutter has him
When all else fails, read the instruction manual.
Obvious point: Crosby is, in fact, really good.
He’s going to fry you at least once a game. The positive development is that Sutter’s hockey pants aren’t collecting splinters at the end of the bench as Mo is prone to do with young players and non-top-liners.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
We are the Borg, you will be assimilated into playing OFFENSE

Samson
Samson is impressive. He is strong and fast and has a Ruutu like attitude. He really, really wants to win.
Sutter is better than Staal already, I think. For whatever reason, Staal seems to start the season well each year on FOs, then fizzle out.

The Albany Rats really came through well. Carson was pushed around some; but all in all, he got in a groove and played very intelligently. Harrison looked much improved and much more confident. If they can play against the Penguins, they can play against anybody.

I can’t remember the exact quote but they were talking about Gleason having the A on his sweater tonight. Forslund said something to the effect that he thought Gleason definitely deserves the A and “a bigger letter in my book” inferring the C.
Thanks – pretty impressive. He is reading here – and maybe he has the ear of a few in the room and the front office….the power of the internet.

I took the red eye in from Vegas last night/this morning…. and after 2 days/nights of drinking 500% more than I typically do, the brain cells are a little lacking right now in the memory dept.
I’ve heard Forslund sing Gleason’s praises many times. I’m glad Gleason has improved over the years. I remember his first year with the ’Canes it seemed like he was making a lot of mistakes. His determination to keep the puck out of the goal in the last 20 second tonight was just incredible.
Now Forslund is heaping praise on Gleason for his response to Guerin “Gleason is so snarly that if practice isn’t going well he’ll start a fight” (about his days with the Kings).

Brind'Amour = Healthy Scratch
Even Mike Manascalco started down the road of saying that it was time for Brind’Amour to retire. That is a sea change. Brind’Amour needs to be a healthy scratch. This team needs to find its leaders for the future. He needs to let the fans praise his great past work and cheer him like Glen Wesley.
I remember Mike M going ballistic a month ago when a post-game caller suggested it was time for Brind`Amour to retire. He ranted for 10minutes about how much Rod was the leader in the room and those of us on the outside just didn’t get it.
This has been quite an adjustment for all of us the last several weeks.
