Team releases info on accident, Conboy recall

The Hurricanes have confirmed that a early morning bus accident on the Massachusetts Turnpike has left four players and one staff member injured. They all remain at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass., and are "being treated for serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries."

Still no word on who was injured.

Star-divide

Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes today announced that the team has recalled defenseman Tim Conboy from Albany of the American Hockey League (AHL). Conboy will be available for tonight’s game against the New York Islanders on Long Island.

Rutherford also confirmed that the River Rats’ team bus was involved in an accident last night, as the team was traveling back to Albany from a game in LowellMA. The accident occurred on the Massachusetts Turnpike just before 3:30 a.m. Players and staff members were take to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA., for treatment, and the majority of the passengers are now returning to Albany. Four players and one staff member remain at the hospital being treated for serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.

This marks the second NHL recall of the season for Conboy, 26. He skated in five games for the Hurricanes in December, earning one assist and averaging 9:28 of ice time per game. The FarmingtonMN, native has totaled one goal and five assists (6 points) and 127 penalty minutes in 39 AHL games with Albany this season. Originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round (217th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Conboy has totaled six assists and 62 penalty minutes in 24 career NHL games, all with Carolina. Conboy was not with the River Rats for the team’s game in Lowell last night, and he was not involved in the bus accident.

Jeff Daniels already said he didn’t think they were career-threatening. Let’s pray he’s right.

As someone who clearly remembers both the Konstantinov, Dan Snyder and Steve Chiasson accidents, I simply hate seeing that word used in conjunction with hockey players. I hope everyone will be OK.
