Canes Press Release - Brandon Sutter Reassigned to Albany
RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned center Brandon Sutter to the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Sutter, 20, netted three goals and earned an assist (4 points) in seven games during his first stint with Albany from Feb. 25-March 9. He earned a plus-2 plus/minus rating and scored a power-play goal and a shorthanded tally for the Rats. The Huntington, NY, native is in his first full professional season, and has notched one goal and earned five assists (6 points) in 50 games with the Hurricanes.
Sutter (6’3", 183 lbs.) joined Carolina this season after completing his junior hockey career with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League in 2007-08. He scored 68 goals and earned 86 assists (154 points) in 205 career regular-season games with Red Deer, before joining Albany for the end of the 2007-08 regular season and the River Rats’ playoff series against the Philadelphia Phantoms. Carolina drafted Sutter in the first round, 11th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

He needs to get stronger in the faceoff circle. He’s a well-rounded player, but that is lacking and it makes him a liability on the PK and in crucial situations.

If he’s w/ the big boys and not playing – no reason to pay him his NHL salary for eating chicken wings in the press box during games. There’s a load of forwards up for the Canes’ final roster – getting Sutter some PT in the AHL does nothing to hurt his development.

As Cory mentioned… he needs to get stronger in the faceoff circle….
But he also needs to get stronger overall…. He has a little body on a very big frame (if that makes sense)… I think it’s a great idea to let him gain experience in the AHL and then put on some weight over the summer and come back ready and conditioned to play on the big team next year…. (I’ve got a feeling we’re going to need him more next season)

So why call him up? Maybe they just wanted to stuff some chicken wings down his neck and put some meat on his bones. If you all think he needs practice in the face off circle, I can’t think of a better place than near Roddy……..
I dunno, I really like that kid, I think he may be the best Sutter yet. In all honesty in the first part of the year he and Ruutu were the only guys checking hard. Doug Weight proved the kid could take a hit, he got in a couple fights, was literaly the only short handed threat until Cullen and Rosie hooked up, played every second he was on the ice like it was his last. personaly I think he was more of a pro level player than several of the squad. The team seems to be clicking now a little more often, but I think he’s that kids gonna be huge for our team and the NHL. If he packs on and can handle 30 more pounds he’s gonna be an assasin with and without the biscuit. That Boychuck kid is another one I’d like to see more of, I’d guess he will be the fastest guy on the team and has great hands and good hockey sense. That’s 2 forwards, though, who do we lose?
A
They had to call him up
There are special rules about having kids his age in the AHL. Technically, he was too young to assign there until now. That’s why they sent him there originally just for a “reconditioning assignment”, but that could only last 2 weeks, so he had to return. His juniors team, Red Deer just completed their season this weekend, so his juniors eligibility is over for the year, and he can now be sent to Albany.
A bunch of technical mumbo jumbo.
