Negotiations With Cole, Unconfirmed
Regarding the article earlier today concerning Erik Cole and a possible, upcoming new contract:
The Hurricanes official policy regarding contracts is not to negotiate with players until after the season is over. According to a source who will remain unnamed, at this time the club says that they are not breaking this policy regarding Erik Cole, or any other player who has an expiring contract this offseason. They will wait until the season is over to begin negotiations, as usual.
Now having said this, they did make an exception to the policy when they completed Eric Staal's contract extension earlier this year. Regardless, there is nothing official from the club confirming any ongoing negotiations with Cole. The article from The Fourth Period.com, which originated from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, is just speculation, and should be treated as such.
The Canes will certainly attempt to re-sign the winger at some point though, so it is interesting speculation, none the less.

Act Now!
1) Ask the Buffalo sabres how they feel about that club policy. By not negotiating with impending UFA’s they lost Briere, Drury and Campbell going from an Eastern Conference power to an also-ran
2) Sometimes you get a much better deal now than waiting until the player can get competing offers from 10+ other teams. If Cole is in the Canes plans for 09-10, then the time to act is now!
I agree with your point to an extent. They may in fact get a better deal from Cole by wrapping up the deal now rather than later….. Actually…. it would almost be a sure bet that they would get a better deal.
However…. Cole can not receive offers from other teams until AFTER his current contract is over on July 1st. Which would give the Hurricanes a minimum of 3 weeks to get a deal done before other teams could make an offer…..

I say let Erik Cole play for his new contract…
Lets see what he can do for the remander of the season +playoffs, and then use that to determine what he deserves vs what we can afford.
If we get past the 1st round, offer the man 3mil. If we go past the second round, 3.5mil. If we win it all give him whatever the F@*& he wants!!!

The problem w/ this theory is that it puts pressure on ONE guy when the focus needs to be on the entire team….

Thanks for the follow up...
Bubba-
I appreciate the follow up on the 4th period.com/Ottawa Sun item on Cole. I personally felt it was a bit too early for the negotiations to start especially with the playoffs looming. I’ve always felt that JR has left hockey to be played on the ice and business strictly off. If he’s gonna resign Cole he’ll most likely begin after the season is over. But thats just my opinion. Hope my previous post on this didn’t stir too much homework for you but as always-Thanks for your great work.

No problem, it did not create too much work at all. I thought this would be an interesting topic for a slow Monday morning, but my follow-up took on a bit of a life of it’s own. In no way was I intending to represent that the TFP article was indeed a fact, but in retrospect I should have worded my original title a bit differently and treated my article as more of a question to a rumor. I did not mean to give the original story more credence than it deserved, but I got sidetracked with the numbers analysis of the whole thing and did not focus on the origin of the information itself.
In any event, it’s been very interesting and another learning experience.

Good read on SI.com
Alan Muir gives the Canes a solid write up for their March play so far. Check it out its worth the time for the Caniac Nation as we generally don’t get much love from the larger media guys.
