Yeah, pretty much. If I were to lean one way or the other, it would be LeClaire as the better part of the deal. Vermette has come on lately, especially under new coaching, though. Ottawa getting a 2nd rounder on top of it would be icing. Clearly goaltending was a position they could afford to give up though.
Steve Mason is the real deal, but LeClaire seems to be pretty legit too. Oh to have that problem!
Connolly re-signs with Buffalo … $4.5M per for two years. They overpaid for him again.
Kuba sticks in Ottawa, too … three years at $3.7M per.
CanesCountry.com: An Eye On Carolina Hockey
Apparently Pascal LeClaire found out about his trade by sitting on his computer refreshing tsn.ca
funny stuff.
The Kuba deal is more reasonable than the Connolly deal, but wow, Buffalo is still spooked from losing their top free agents a few summers ago. Even though Briere and Drury turned out to be way overpaid for the production they are giving.
nhl.com glitches
anybody noticing problems with the nhl.com site?
i have reverted to the tsn.ca site instead, they have great coverage.
Yeah, im going to turn on NHL network once Noon hits and their deadline coverage starts. nhl.com is super slow today, tsn.ca is definitely the best bet.
Pens get Wozniewski from STL for (ex-Cane) Danny Richmond
CanesCountry.com: An Eye On Carolina Hockey
I always liked Danny. He fancied himself an enforcer though and he was too small for that
GM of CanesCountry.com
yes, definitely. Michigan coach Red Berenson always points to Richmond as “why college hockey players should stay four years.”

Whats everyone think about Clemmensons availability?, he went 25-13-1 so far this year, think he’d play backup or you think he’s looking for a starting job?
NHL network is a free preview right now apparently, for anyone who normally doesn’t get it and might be interested in watching NHL live
All these ex canes floating around today, who is going to Bruno St Jacques??
Better quetsion is where in the **** is Bruno St Jacques?
Interesting move by Toronto. Why pick him up just until the end of the year? to help them lose more games so they can qualify for the 1st round pick?
GM of CanesCountry.com
I really hoped against hope that Joke-inen would never play a single post season game in his career. I hate that dude!
bill clement clearly doesn’t like him. says he does nothing but shoot, doesnt make people around him better, and beaver tails every time hes on the ice, begging for the puck.
meh, lot of new faces, limited time to practice, canes riding a high, im not worried about the flames tooooo much.
suggestion on nhl live that chicago would settle for a utility center who can just win face offs.
cough brindamour cough
This is probably resulting from the fact that Edmonton seems to be set on NOT trading Cole…. So why not follow what Carolina did in ’06 and put Recchi where Cole would go…???
by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Mar 4, 2009 1:32 PM EST up reply actions
you would think it would pick up by now. What about Guerin and Antropov, and Morris. The bidding must still be fast and furious
GM of CanesCountry.com
I’m not so sure Buffalo has improved all that much.
Or the Pens for that matter. That remains to be seen. TSN is still showing the NYI acquisition from Pitt as TBA
Conditional draft pick…
Buffalo didn’t really improve more so they just filled up a leak

As long as they don’t spend any extra money then JR and PK will consider it a success…..
by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Mar 4, 2009 2:14 PM EST up reply actions
If we are gonna read so much into one loss at ATL, how come you guys aren’t feeling as positive about that big win last night? Just a little devil’s advocate, because I know ATL wasn’t an isolated incident, and they have blown some big games late.
I think the Canes do have the pieces to make the post season. Success once they get there, maybe not, but I think they can do it. It’d be nice to make a deal that improves the team, but I really dont think many people are interested in the pieces the Canes are willing to part with, nor is the price right.
I hope JR proves me wrong.
Seriously?
I’m not sure why the Panthers would trade Beaumester (sp?) when they are clearly not out of the playoff race… why would a team on the inside trade away (possibly) their best player???
by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Mar 4, 2009 2:26 PM EST up reply actions
that can’t be the trade. why would ottawa give something up for him, when they can just try and sign him this summer

I’m sure Florida would get more than Neil for Bouwmeester, although with Jacques Martin, anything is possible

yeah…. I wasn’t trying to start up that rumor…. I was asking a question about Bouwmeester at the end of my “seriously” comment about Neil.
Sorry for the confusion….

If they were going to get him then they would probably have to trade someone for him…. they are not going to spend extra money without shipping some out (kind of like they did w/ Jokenin)

I don’t think that Satan can help the other guys on the team care any more….
Our guys have been trading “I don’t give a crap” for “I couldn’t care less” all season….
by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on Mar 4, 2009 2:41 PM EST up reply actions
Well, they need to stick with whatever they had last night then.
Clearly they have had issues all season, but they have played brilliantly sometimes too
I don’t think all is as dark as you seem to in Canes Country, but who knows.
I agree Iggy. I still think that this team is a contender. They have flashes of brilliance and the bottom line is that if they can play with that brilliance over the next couple of months they will go a long way in the playoffs!
The loss to Atlanta was a pathetic example of what our team has been all year…. Hockey games are 60 minutes… not 50… not 40… not 20…
Our guys have been playing 50, 40, 30, and 20 minute games all season…. which is why they are barely in the chase instead of at the top of the conference….

Id be sad to see him go, but if we could turn him into a good return, then so be it. Rosie is really coming on strong this season, and he might fill the same sort of role. Regardless, plenty of Canes I dont want to see go

Still no word yet as the Canes go through the formalities of making a deal official, but something will hopefully be announced very soon. If not sooner, Jim Rutherford is holding a press conference at 4 p.m. (pre-scheduled earlier in the day), so there should be something then.
in all reality it’s probably Walker or Bayda or some of the guys who actually give 100%

Late to the party....
But the Rangers, one of the teams the Canes are chasing, just got a lot better. Avery and Bell off waivers the other day, now picking up Morris and Antropov (who will both be UFAs playing for big money), and they lose Dawes, Prucha, and Kalinin to PHX and Reitz on waivers.
Avery, Bell, Antropov, Morris>Prucha, Dawes, Reitz, Kalinin. I hate to say it because I really loved Prucha’s style, but he and Dawes were going to be healthy scratches anyway with Antropov and Avery coming in.
Rutherford said he wanted to get a scorer to replace the injured Williams. Gaborik? Rutherford loves those injury-prone discounts! But who goes the other way?

sounds like O’S and a 2nd to Carolina for Williams, then Williams for Cole. … so LA’s 2nd, presumably
CanesCountry.com: An Eye On Carolina Hockey
t’s a complex deal, so bear with me. The Hurricanes initially traded Williams to Los Angeles in exchange for Patrick O’Sullivan and Calgary’s second-round pick in 2009. Then, they moved O’Sullivan, along with their own second rounder this summer to Edmonton in exchange for Cole and Edmonton’s fifth-round pick, also in 2009.
To sum it up, Carolina gets Cole, Edmonton’s fifth-rounder and Calgary’s second-round pick, Edmonton gets O’Sullivan and Carolina’s second-round pick, and Los Angeles gets Williams.
Quite a move.
Jim Rutherford’s press conference coming up – we’ll have his reaction shortly.
LOVE IT
I’ll miss Williams, but that was ALOT of money tied up.
We get something that works now, and we should all be glad that this season is not being given up on. It’s going be be tougher than we though now that we see what other teams are doing.
Plus O’s is another small forward, exactly what we don’t need.
I am not a fan of getting rid of Williams, I hope this doesnt come back to bite us when he gets healthy. It seems as though we got rid of him for a rental in Cole for a few months, when we likely could have resigned Cole at the end of the year….

lavi loves the trade because of staal, and haters have been crapping on staal all season since cole has been gone.
if this helps staal at all im all for it.
This trade isn't that bad...
Cole is a UFA at the end of the season. Williams wasn’t even in the lineup; who knows if he’ll ever get back to all-star form again. If Cole doesn’t perform, then the Canes let Cole walk, take the $3 mil. Williams would have gotten, and they sign a free agent scorer in the off season. On the other hand, Cole and Staal might recapture their mojo and make something happen.
Don't see what's so great about O'Sullivan
Did we really want another short, small forward?
Still not a crook!
It seems to me the question going into the deadlines were if teams were “buyers” or “sellers”. This trade to me doesn’t make teams seem like buyers or sellers, but just “shufflers”. I dont think this trade really does much for any of the three teams talentwise, but just seems like a shuffle-up…
Any thoughts?
We eliminated Williams contract..
and in return got someone who can immediately help us, but won’t bog us down financially right now.
Still not a crook!
We'll worry about that later
It will be interesting to see how they both co-exist. Maybe the question will answer itself by the end of the year.
Still not a crook!
Don’t forget next year you’ll have Sutter back also Boychuk(who is scoring every time he touches the puck).
Rod’s days are probably limited, his play is diminishing rapidly….he is minus a billion this year
by PittsburghCaniac on Mar 4, 2009 4:46 PM EST up reply actions
yep, he is starting to turn into dead-weight as well.
by PittsburghCaniac on Mar 4, 2009 4:48 PM EST up reply actions
Personally, I don’t like this trade. We got rid of Cole for good reasons..now, hes back as an UFA, and if Williams ever turns out to be a half decent player again, this is going to look terrible.
by PittsburghCaniac on Mar 4, 2009 4:49 PM EST reply actions
While sitting back and thinking about this… I think I like the trade originally. I dont however like the tone in Cole’s voice on TSN when asked what he felt about it… and the work “disappointing” came up.
But think of it this way guys… Cole is a FA after this season- HE WILL BE PLAYING HIS ARSE OFF. After this season, he needs to raise his stock.
by packpigskinfan25 on Mar 4, 2009 4:49 PM EST reply actions
Relax
Yea, we got Cole back and it’s a gamble. But what did we give up for him? A guy who’s not even playing for us and can’t seem to stay in the lineup.
Still not a crook!
Dead On
This is exactly the point of view that needs to be taken. Williams hasn’t done squat this year, not to mention last year. Those who are saying “IF Williams gets back….”, well, that’s a big if. Particularly considering the Canes NEED to make the playoffs from a financial perspective, they need someone who will actually be on the ice. By the time Williams gets back, their playoff fate could already be sealed.
Brind’Amour is done, even if he’s back on the team next year (I think he’s retiring), there is a good chance Staal is the captain next year. Rod is enough of a professional to put the team ahead of himself. If the Stars can take the C off of Modano’s sweater, do think the Canes can’t take Rod’s.
Also, the Canes didn’t get rid of Cole because he sucked. They got rid of him because Wesley and Hedican were gone and they needed bodies on the blue line and they had depth at the forward position. Cole offered them the best opportunity to get value in turn. I think he will look more like himself back in a Canes sweater now being back in a locker room he’s comfortable in. He never fit in well with the Oilers, although he started playing better as of late. Hell, the Bruins were after him, so he must not suck that much.
Look at it this way, they traded Williams and a 2nd rounder to get Pitkanen, a 2nd rounder and a 5th rounder. All in all, not bad. Plus, they gave themselves fiscal flexibility this offseason. This way they can get Ruutu re-signed and possibly even get Cole back for a hometown discount.
They keep saying he’s familiar with the team, half of them are different. I think this a shot across Staals bow. He needs to produce now period. Never scene a hail mary trade before.
A
Other than Jokinen and Pitkanen who else is new? Yeah there have been a lot of call ups, but most of those guys have been in the system for some time.
Ruutu, Corvo and Eaves, Seids, , even Rosie, Samsinov, most of the dam team has very little or no time playing with this guy. Hell Rechi and weight have as much. This a vastly different team. He has lot’s of time with waste of skates Rod and Staal. This nothing more than a hail mary to get Staal to earn his check. Cullen, not Staal is by far the best player on this team right now. Will it last? Dunno, I have always thought he had it in him. But to bring in Cole and then have to shuffle lines because of it, is ludicris and frankly stupid, unless it’s just to shed Williams salary, drop Cole and sign Ruutu and Rosie. But if you are gonna pin your hopes on Cole to get us anywhere but to the tee early, you ain’t been watching him.
A
I concede the Weight and Recchi point, but it’s not like he’s never seen these guys before. Rosie has been on the team for more than a couple years.
I’m not sure this has anything to do with making Staal play harder, but maybe it does. Nor am I sure Cullen is the best player. Recently maybe, but not the entire year. I’m not saying that Cole is going to carry them into the playoffs, but he certainly will provide more in near future than Williams would.
I think the point that needs to be considered is that this team needs the playoffs now. Obviously from the marketing push for the ticket renewals, they are hurting. Not making the the playoffs 2 years in a row, now maybe 3, would be disasterous. They hedging their bet that Cole can contribute now. Will it be enough? Who knows, but it’s a gamble they need to take. On top of that they have no financial commitment past this year.
You act like the Canes are in the poor house. Ticket sales have been through the roof the past few weeks (mostly sold out).
I agree with most of that. I understand shedding Williams, I just think we could of got alot better out of it. There is also way too much spin on how he’s “familiar” with everybody, my butt. Also JR saying we were out of the PO by this time last year was bold faced lie. What gals me is we bring back a guy that was sliding, got good return for him and the bring him back for what? He is not a power skater anymore, have you watched him this year? He’s not that good. Whop is? Cullens line is on fire, we finaly got a line that is going apeshit (like Cole/Staal of yore). So what’s gonna happen? The one dam line that is kicking ass and taking names will almost assuredly get broken up. So a potential/has been can get his 1st line spot. What line did he just come off of? Anyone here actually play hockey? There is alot of timing and it takes time and practice, including the D. Cole is not stepping into anything he’s been in beforer. he’s getting put on an underacheiving line in the hopes he will come back and therefore the line will succeed. Meanwhile our captain probably couldn’t make training camp, the one line that is clicking may just get broken up, along with the momentum and timing they had developed, we still aren’t sure if Cam will show up every night, Leighton who, we have no physical player except Ruutu who is now about to get demoted to a lesser line.
this was the dumbest thing since Anson Carter and at least that bone head move didn’t destroy what was working on the team.
I am astounded they did this. It’s an obvious hail mary to get our big nickel guy going. so Eric now costs us his salary and Coles? Or do you really believe Cole is suddenly gonna find his game?
Hell bring Lavi back, make the shame complete.
A
they have operated in the red every year for the last five years, save the Cup year. The only reason they made money that year is because of the playoff take. They may sell a lot of tickets, but that doesn’t mean they’re making money. Their ticket prices are far below the rest of the league. The margin on those tickets is much smaller than other teams, therefore they make less money.
Let me put this way, if they were flush with cash, they wouldn’t be 5-7 mil below the cap. They would be right up against like the wings, devils and rangers. I’m not saying they’re in the same boat as the Isles, Preds or Thrashers, but they aren’t making money either.
Dude the Canes don’t have the money the wings(like New York Yankees, baseball) to go out and buy all the allstar players. We are a smaller market even though I hate when people say that. Alot, if not half the teams lose money every year. Even if we get to the playoffs round one will be as for as we get, thats not going to get them OUT of the red.
That was basically my point. The cap is the same for everyone (it’s not a moving target like the NFL). I completely agree with you. I wasn’t saying they should/could spend like them. I was trying to point out (obviously not very effectively) that just because they are seemingly selling tickets that doesn’t mean they aren’t hurting financially.
You’re right, they need a significant playoff run to even come close to breaking even.
the other thing to consider is that Cole is/was a fan favorite. This move alone will fill the seats for at least the next few games. Just think of how pissed the majority of the fan base was when they traded him last summer.
I’ll be there Friday and will be excited to see the reception he gets from the crowd. If you were there when the Oilers were here in November and saw his reception then, can you imagine what it will be like when he has the Hurricane on his sweater?
Seats don’t mean squat, the teams don’t make money until the second season. Seats slow the bleeding of the salary’s, but the money comes in at the post season. As per the CBA, I think we are the first/only team to be facing a penalty in the sharing. We have been getting our percentage cut, I think the third year is a zero share. In that vein, the Cole deal is good. If we miss the PO’s again, it will cost millions and they will be hurtin’ bad. So he’s a UFA and can be shed. Unfortunatley Ruutu and Rosie are also. So let’s say Cole isn’t Gretzky reincarnated, look at next year. We get Sutter and Boychuck up. We lose Williams, Cole, Ruutu and Rosie. Hopefully Rod, Wallin and Kaberle go somewhere on a fishing trip. That roster is far weaker than the one we had this morning. So unless Cole can carry a team, which he never has in his entire career, this move was to lose all those players in a salary dump, to make up for the share loss and that’s why I hate this move. We should of raced what we brung to the track or traded for a proven player.
A
I largely agree with you, although I think Ruutu will be back. If nothing else, I think this trade accomplished that. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Cole came back for what they were paying WIlliams (maybe less, I’m not sure what Cole’s market will be this summer considering the cap may get lowered as has been suggested).
This post basically reaffirms what I was trying to say in my previous post.
Keeping Ruutu will go along way to to helping. With even a first round exit, I don’t think they can sign him and for sure not both. JR’s first words at the presser were whining about how they were running over budget all year, etc.
It feels like the fireesale
A
Maybe, probably. But I think it’s doable if they can get Cole for less than he’s making now. If they can get both in 3-3.5 mil range each, then I think they are affordable. Ruutu is making 2.25 now and Cole is at 4. It would be a slight increase in spending, but not much.
But do I think it’s likely? No.
Two points back....
Didn’t Cole score the winning goal when the Oilers beat us earlier this season.
Could’ve at least threw the game cause we could use those points now.
