Movin' On - Canes Steal One From Devils, 4-3

The Carolina Hurricanes scored two goals in the last minute and twenty seconds and snatched victory from the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night to capture the series and move on in the playoffs.  Jussi Jokinen blasted a shot past Martin Brodeur on a pass from Joni Pitkanen to tie the score at 18:40 and Eric Staal put one past the goalie just 48 seconds later for the game winner.

Many fans will be heading to the airport to welcome the team when they return later tonight.  For more information about where to go and what time the team will arrive, check out this page at the Hurricanes main site.

Cam Ward had another outstanding game and made save after save to keep the Canes in the contest.  I'll have more details and thoughts about the game and the series a bit later, as well as a report from the airport.

This is another game that will be long remembered and will go down in Hurricanes folklore, much like the "Miracle at Molson".  You just don't see an ending like this one.

Much more later.....

Like Bubba said, we need to come up with a moniker for this one. “Miracle on The Rock”. Something like that. I call dibs on that one……. :)

How about this (yes, you can all laugh at me later)-“The One-Two-Three-by-Twelve”

Meaning-
One, then two goals, in one minute and twenty seconds (the whole 1-2 mix works well here)
three by twelve is Jokinen (#36)
twelve being Stallsy (#12)

Ok, laugh at me later…I know its coming :)

I just can’t quite believe what I saw tonight!!!! My Dad called me for good luck with about 2:30 left in the 3rd..then Jussi scores, then Staal scores. Unreal.

I can’t ask for much more than this. Maybe Boston crushes us but no one can take away the series that we just saw!

Deserved win

Devils lost focus at the end when they couldn’t clear that puck for the equalizer and they remained unfocused and in shock when Staal went untouched and fired a laser. Maybe Brodeur should have had it, but one could just as easily ask why anyone didn’t try and maul Staal as he was rushing up ice with it to begin with.

Canes took advantage of the Devils’ losing focus at the end. Well played and congrats on moving on. We blew it and you took it. Good job.

"The Shock at the Rock"

Ivan459 said this game needs a moniker.

“The Shock at the Rock” is my stab at it.

I don’t think I’ve ever run laps around my living room before. Think I freaked out the dog!! Cory can attest to this. Also I must wear the flip flops from now on as the Canes win when I wear them. LOL!! Let’s go Canes!!

Three questions:

1- how many greeted them at the airport last night? Any pictures you can post?
2- can someone put together the series’ stats for points, GWG, hits, goalie stats, etc? It was such a team effort.
3 – How’s Ruutu?

by Carolyn Christians on Apr 29, 2009 9:18 AM EDT reply actions

1. I am horrible at guessing the size of crowds, but there were a lot of people. More than 500 but probably less than 1,000. My video was not good because of the lighting, but Cory has contacts with photos and he might be able to post a link or post some here. I might try to post my video tonight.

2. Cory or I will be doing a “series review” within the next day or so. It was certainly a team effort with many heroes.

3. Ruutu looked fine as he was driving, waving, and smiling with his two Finnish buddies riding along last night.

I honestly don’t think the video (or the comments) do any justice to the crowd that showed up at the airport last night…. From where I was standing the line seemed to go on forever… and was several rows deep w/ people….

Yeah, the video is frustratingly short. Would love to see more pics.

answer to #2: at the canes website under stats and players they have the playoff stats all lined out. It was interesting and impressive. All that’s missing is TOI – I think Pitkanen is another unsung hero in all the hype with the forwards and Gleason. http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app?service=page&page=Stats

Thanks for the other link to the airport story and the good news on Ruutu.

Now I want to learn how to say “Let’s Go Canes!” in Finnish. ANyone speak the language? We have a lot of Canes’ fans over there I believe – can you imagine how the coach of Jussi and Joni during their teenage years must feel today? If you listen to Jussi on that amazing pass at 1:21 – he and Joni have been making that play since they were 14.

With 5 minutes left in the game...

With around 5 minutes left I looked at my 82 year old father who has turned into a Caniac since I left Raleigh and moved in to help him 4 years ago. I said, “The damn Devils are getting their sticks on everything and just dumping the puck. They are just like everyone says and GREAT with a lead. I guess this is the last 5 minutes of the season we are watching.” He politely agreed but I heard him hesitate before he did and I knew I shouldn’t give up on THIS team regardless of what they were up against. So I reached down and knocked on the wood of the chair I was sitting in and thought “That didn’t count, I didn’t even say that,” and I regained hope.

When Joni made that cross ice pass I was already out of my chair yelling when Jussi smacked it. I KNEW if Jussi put that shot on net it was going in. Then, as I was jumping around the house hollering after Staal’s goal, Dad was on the edge of his chair yelling “They did it!!! They did it!!! 30 seconds left!!! Staal did it!!!” And I thought how I’d rather be nowhere else watching the game with anyone else. Wow, what a game! No one can ever tell me that hockey is not the best sport in the world.

Love, love, love the Canes!

One of the things I love about the Canes under Brind'Amour...

Is that they never give up. I don’t know if it is due to Rod’s influence or not, but since he’s been captain, they have such a great work ethic and refuse to quit. That is why we advance and the Devils get to think about cleaning out their attic or mowing the lawn.

Fabulous win, but my coronary arteries could use a nice blowout for a change, as could Chuck’s voice on the radio…

I nominate Better Than Ezra’s “Juicy” as his theme song.
