Hurricanes' Scott Walker Fined, But Not Suspended
From the Hurricanes:
NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE FINES SCOTT WALKER
Forward incurs $2,500 fine for incident at 17:13 mark of third period of Game 5
RALEIGH, NC—The National Hockey League today announced that Hurricanes forward Scott Walker has been fined $2,500 for an incident that occurred at the 17:13 mark of the third period of Game 5 against the Boston Bruins. There will be no additional punishment assessed.
"We are satisfied with the league’s ruling," said Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford. "After our team received several punches throughout the series leading up to Game 5, it was a matter of time before one was going to be thrown back."
"I accept the league’s decision," said Walker. "Based on what was said on the ice as I was dropping my gloves, it was my understanding that I was engaged in an altercation."

I also heartily endorse the league’s clear indication that sending messages at the end of games will go unpunished as long as you have made eye contact with the victim of your suckerpunch.

Do you know what was said on the ice? Walker thought he was in an altercation and for whatever reason the league believed him.
McKenzie is not a Canes fan and he agrees as well. Why not whine on his blog?

Well, I am going to guess that because Ward didn’t make any move to indicate that he was in a fight that Walker might not be telling the entire truth.
Why not whine on his blog? Because it’s easier to comment here. Not surprised that you guys would are defending the play.

I’m not defending it, I’m saying I agree with the league decision. I am also not surprised that you would be against it.
This is not typical behavior for the Hurricanes. If fans who don’t like the Canes to begin with want to make more of it than it is, that’s up to them, but the Canes would prefer nothing more than to just play hockey and leave all the dirty play to the teams who do that best.

I’m curious what was said … Ward was certainly wrapped up with Walker. We aren’t talking about someone sneaking up from the side or behind.
No
We’re talking about throwing a haymaker at someone that sure looked like he didn’t know he was in a fight despite Walker’s use of the Sydney Crosby Defence.
If you think that it was a clean punch then I look forward to your levelheaded response to any possible retribution from the Bruins.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
I would hope one of our players would be able to figure out what’s going on after the first punch thrown misses him. Ward got laid out by the second punch thrown by Walker.
Still not a crook!
Sure but..
Why should Ward have to fight after having two random punches thrown at him? By your logic, if Lucic grabs Staal off of the opening faceoff and breaks his face it’s Staal’s fault for not fighting him?
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
What was Staal doing before hand?
Was Staal hitting Thomas in the knee with his stick the whole night?
See what you lack is context.
Yes, if Walker went up to Ward when the Bs were playing hard with no cheap shot hockey, no “extra hits” away from the play, etc, then Walker should be benched for the playoffs. That is not the case with A Ward.
Why do you think Walker hit Ward?

I’ve seen Chara punch at least three players in the face after whistles were blown. Good for Walker just wish is was on Lucic or Chara Monkey.

There is a big difference between Chara giving a face wash in a scrum and what Walker did.

didn’t we already talk about this??? I said it earlier today, Chara just punches people, at random after the whistle, CONSTANTLY!!!!!!! and get’s away with it! he is a much dirtier player than Scotty. The second sucker punch landed where it needed to.
Show me one time where Chara wound up the way that Walker did and threw a haymaker. You can’t. Yes, he has been active in the scrums. He is the biggest player on the ice, he is supposed to be in the mix to defend his teammates.
Earlier in the series, I was impressed with how knowledgeable Canes fans are but as this series has gone on it is clear that Canes fans still have a lot to learn about the sport of hockey.

We are just upset with the way chara hits and mixes it up with people. I keep going back to what he did to Cullen in game 4. I would think that the captain of any team would have the sense to not to a)push a player down on the ice AFTER the whistle, and b) poke Cullen in the face WITH his stick. Lucky Cullen had a shied on his helmet or else something bad would have happened before game 5….
BTW, we are just as knowledgeable as you guys are. I am sure that you guys have the same type of people that cheer for your team as we do. And if you say you don’t, you would be a liar.

I don’t know if anyone notices… but Scott Walker goes into the little mans “survival mode” when he is in a fight…. I don’t think anyone can hurt him…..

Good!
Although Walker sorta stole A-ward(totally deserved), he had been playin gang-banger style all series and I can’t believe it took to game five for somebody to nail him. I was at game 7 in ‘06, I know how valuable Ward was like everybody else. But that was then and it’s obvious that several of the Canes from that team don’t like his @$$ now anyway, so why should we? I been saying scince the beginning him and a few others are gonna get theirs for their chump tactics. Hopefully Lucic and Chara get to see some tweety birds next game
Fair enough
People act like the Bruins have been a bunch of saints all series, but the truth is they’ve been getting away with murder. Just last night Cole was sent head-first into the boards by the pure and honorable Chara, Conboy took several punches (and didn’t crumple to the ice, Aaron) before his gloves were off last night, Kjreci flattening Jussi after the whistle, etc…
Rutherford is exactly right on this one. Boston has been taking liberties all series long and finally enough was enough.
Still not a crook!
Two Wrongs Make A Right
I look forward to the third wrong (maybe having Lucic wreck Ward’s knee?) cleaning up the situation even further.

No, the reason why nascrap jokes are made is because people from up north (mainly canada) have never been down here to know that this is not the “po dunk redneck state” that everyone thinks it is.
They are the ones who constantly talk crap about North Carolina, when the assholes have never even set foot on USA soil much less set foot in NC. So don’t harp on Mateo for that. None of us help people fuel the fire of that so called joke.
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
Eh, I’m not so sure that NO canes fans fuel the fire for such jokes. But then again there are plenty of boston fan stereotypes (and ones for pretty much every sports city) so whatever.
Here, let me try again. This time, less NASCAR:
“I guess Mateo doesn’t understand that hockey fans follow the league even when their team isn’t in the playoffs.”
You can try to call me out for that, because I’m sure there are plenty of hockey fans in Carolina who watched last year’s playoffs, but that was the whole crux of what he said.

Well then, I’ll try again as well: I will go as far as to say many of the Carolina Hurricanes fans try to fight that “joke” whenever it pops up. I myself are one of those people. I hate to watch people drive around in circles for 3 and a half hours. But many do, and I am sure that a few enjoy the Canes as well.
So those who make that joke are just bitter people who hate to see hockey grow in the south b/c they want an NHL team for every town in canada, or they just want more teams in the north b/c it is more pure that way, or whatever reason they can muster. We try to blunt that crap all the time on here. and trust me those who make are not well received on this blog.

Well, just to educate the open minded...
I do live smack dab in the middle of NASCAR country. The NASCAR Hall of Fame is being built 45 minutes south of me. There are NASCAR race shops in my town and I would venture to guess 90% of their race shops are within a 30 minute drive. There are week long pools at all the sports bars around here and on Sundays the sports bars are NASCAR bars. Most steak houses in my town have race car hoods and dented fenders both hanging from the ceiling or hanging on their walls. NASCAR is everywhere here.
Thing is, I now live 3 hours from Raleigh. I decided move home from the triangle when my mother passed away so I could take care of my elderly father. When I lived in Raleigh, I lived 5 minutes from the RBC (was the ESA). I went to opening night in the ESA against the Devils and was hooked.
While NASCAR has a huge following in NC and provides huge economic impact for this and surrounding communities, I might has well have landed on another planet when I lived in Raleigh and later in Carrboro outside of Chapel Hill. I was actually very happy to live in a place not only not dominated by NASCAR but mostly oblivious to NASCAR until all the jokes came from outside NC.
I understand the perception from the north because of where I live and grew up. You can not get away from NASCAR here. I can also understand why it’s such an insult to the Triangle because you can’t find it there. There is a heavy redneck slant to the NASCAR fans around me and they are the rebel yelling, moonshine drinking (not a bad thing), country music listening trailer park class of people the northerners are mistaking for ‘Canes fans. The people camping at Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the Winston, or Coca Cola 600 or who ever is sponsoring it now, are NOT the people I tailgate with at ’Canes games. It is a completely different class of people. So, make the NASCAR jokes all you want, but it really does not apply to Caniacs and you look ignorant making the joke.
Love, love, love the Canes!
On the Hurricanes web site today there was posted a picture of Cam Ward w/ a NASCAR driver in the locker room….. it was noted that most of the hockey players knew more about NASCAR than the Hurricanes media people who grew up in NC….

This is ridiculous. Whatever you think about the punishment fitting the crime, I think this kind of play is a distraction and not a good move by the ’Canes. Inviting them to beat us up even further is stupid. Just keep playing a quick, crisp passing game, win the races to the pucks, and forget the goon stuff.

I really don’t think that two teams can reverse 180 like that on a whim. I truly think that Carolina lost that game on purpose to try and win the series on home ice. It sounds crazy, but it is reminiscent of the time they were listless against the oilers in game 6 of the finals. They were outplayed like crazy and the reason why was b/c they didn’t want to win the cup up there. They wanted to be back here.
It is a very dangerous method, if they are playing it. I hope they are, just b/c this isn’t good if that is what the Canes are going to offer on Tuesday…..
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
I don’t think they threw the game on purpose…. Boston is a team that you can not give an inch….

I agree completly. If they did throw the game that would explain the crap effort. It is dangerous, but not a crazy idea. If they didn’t throw the game….. then what happened last night? How do the Canes go from dominating them in game 4 in nearly all parts of the game, to BEING dominated in all aspects of the game.
For the Canes and our sake as well, I hope they threw that game…..

Doesn’t even make sense, so did they throw game one too hoping they’d when the next 3 games and lose game 5 so they could win game 6 at home???
C’mon
No, I don’t think that. But doesn’t it just seem a litttttle strange that the Canes would turn that badly on a dime? I think game 1 was game 1. Both teams felt each other out and the Canes made some horrible passes that lead to goals. They tried to win that one but shot themselves in the foot.
However last night was a complete 180 from Friday night, and I don’t think they really wanted that win up there. If they come back here and win, they get the fans happy and they get the revenue. This is just a possible explanation for last night, not an answer to it.
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
This goes along well with players with the head down getting blamed for the injuries they sustain when they get hit….its correct. Ward has been a goon for 5 games and gotten away with tons of trash. So sorry that he finally had to put up or shut up.

Well, I am glad they didn’t suspend him. I am actually happy Walker did it, although this crap should have been noticed earlier. The bruins are a cheap ass team that loves to extracurricular activities after the whistle (for example when frankenstien pushed Cullen down and poked him repeatedly in the face with his stick in game 4; and of course that goes unnoticed).
I am glad Walker did it for reason two: b/c ward has also been a little bitch throughout the series, doing crap after the whistle to guys he played with just a few years back.
All and all the best way to end all of this crap is to just win this damned series on Tuesday and be done with it.

Getting in on this.
The Bruins are a bunch of punks. I hope the Canes run them out of the building. Canes fans unite…………into a see of red.
Bruins can give the cheap stuff...
I heard Rutherford on 99 The Fan today and he made an interesting point. As Ward was pummeling Cullen and throwing him to the ground, Ward’s hands were up. The second Walker came over, Ward’s hands went down. Ward was happy to take on the guy who has been in less than 5 fights in his career, but when the enforcer came around he quickly backed down. In my old neighborhood we would call you a name not suitable for the boards, but let’s just say it means “wimp”.
Ward has only had 6 regular season fights in 14 NHL seasons, so you can throw that argument out the window. Ward was not looking for a fight there. Why would Ward fight? It was inside 5 mins, his team was up by 4, and the B’s only have 6 healthy D-Man. Cullen and Ward were just battling for position in front of the net. If Cullen is really as fragile as the Canes fans think he is, maybe he should be wrapped in bubble wrap.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on May 11, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Like I said early in the day, Ward was running around at the end of Game 4 throwing two-handed shots to the face, all in a game that was well over. He did it out of frustration. I’m pretty sure the Canes are sick of his antics (which, admittedly, are the exact kinds of antics you want out of your character guys in the playoffs), and it came back to bite him in the ass. That doesn’t mean Walker was right in popping him in the face, but it also doesn’t mean Walker is the next Bertuzzi incident waiting to happen. Is it any worse or better than what Lucic did to Lapierre? About the same, I’d say … and if Walker had gotten a game I would’ve understood. Lucic was guilty of a few crosschecks (one to Schneider, plus a slash) in that sequence, but the B’s fans cried foul. You really can’t have it both ways … calling for a one-game suspension is fine, but let’s not act like this was Walker opening the gates of hell.

I don’t think anyone supporting the Canes is asking for it both ways. No one said anyone on the B’s should be suspended. They’re saying that Boston has been cheap-shotting all playoffs (true — and I’ve come at this objectively the entire time .. read my posts) and they got it back two-fold. Bad decision by Walker, but an overdue (tho overdone) reaction by the Canes. I’m sure it’s put everyone on notice that things need to tone down or it’s going to get ugly. People can call the Canes small, soft, whatever … but guys like Gleason, Walker and Conboy have no fear in facing anyone (Lucic had his lunch handed to him by Gleason last year, and Gleason even fought Chara back when he was a King) … so Boston will be best served to take the end of Game 5 as a not-so-subtle warning that Carolina isn’t going to be bullied. Are they the Ducks? No … not even close. But there’s some tough SOBs on the roster.
