Hurricanes Newsstand — May 14

The Hurricane face Game 7 ... again. Instead of Newark, this time the site will be Boston, and it is their opponent who holds the momentum after the Bruins took Games 5 and 6 to force this deciding matchup.

Coach Paul Maurice hinted that their could be some lineup shuffling. Whether that means a change in who is dressed or simply line and/or defense pairing mixing is not known. Expect the same Bruins team that won the past two games — Marc Savard is ready to go after a leg-to-leg collision with Chad LaRose near the end of Game 6.

I didn’t really think the post from the Stanley Cup of Shit-Chowder was funny or necessary….

Yeah, what a bunch of douches, I was starting to kind of like them.

by Iggy Reilly on May 14, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Whatever.....

Personally, I thought it was funny.

I thought the response was better though.

As to the rest, c’est la vie.

I had no sense of humor this morning due to events well outside the realm of internet hockey discussion. I want to clarify that I am definitely not upset about this anymore.

by Iggy Reilly on May 14, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m thinking their guy is probably about 24. The way he praised A Ward’s locker room rants. Grow up!

by Carolyn Christians on May 14, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I personally lost a lot of respect for Aaron Ward because of the way he handled his post-punch media session…. Any classy player wouldn’t have even addressed the issue any further after it had been resolved already by the league…. But Ward continued to cry and pout about it….

Oh well….. I’m nervous for game 7… Go ’Canes!!!

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on May 14, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

26, but not sure what my age has to do with it. The way that Ward wrangled that media horde was awesome. I don’t care if you agree with what he said or not, you have to admit that he did a great job of handling the media.

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on May 14, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t imagine having to handle the media on a constant basis like a pro athlete does. I would snap and break some mics pretty quickly.

by Iggy Reilly on May 14, 2009 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

If acting like a baby is considering as “handling the media” then he did good….

A simple “no comment.” or “It’s over… the league decided what to do…. I’d rather focus on the hockey game ahead….”

That would have been more suitable…. But not Aaron Ward…. Guess he’s forgotten his way and spent too much time w/ the jerks in New York and Boston since he left here……

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on May 14, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Doesn’t Ward still live in Raleigh? I know he still owns his home there.

by Iggy Reilly on May 14, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Cary, actually … think he lives in MacGregor Village.

by Cory Lavalette on May 14, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

From my response to Lavi's change of heart at right:

Did you see Lavi’s decided maybe the Canes are a decent team after all? Welcome back to the fold, Lavi! Hmmm. Trying to win back the affection of his neighbors in Raleigh after his less favorable prediction picking Canes to lose to NJ a month ago?

(Speaking of neighbors – how old are A-Ward’s kids in Cary – hope they were oblivious to the circus playing out with their dad this past Mon and Tues)

My kids play in the house leagues out of Raleigh, and Peter was with us at a couple Mite games (not coaching) in January at Wake Forest. (not that I’m unique in the area, but my 9 yr old has played games with Walker, Brindy’s and Wallin’s son. My peewee boy with young Forslund, Francis and Wesley kids. Nick Wallin showed up at a squirt game at Wake one Sat between games 5 and 6 of the NJ series.

Must be why I feel so connected to them in a hockey mom sort of way. They are so accessible to the community. Sorry if I get a little soupy.

by Carolyn Christians on May 14, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

All of 26, sweet pea?

You’ll understand in another 20 years.

But to give you a hint: I don’t know that calling the media “a bunch of sheep” for simply repeating what NHL execs have publicly stated is really “wrangling the horde” . Kind of emotional, selfish and short-sighted. Seems like A-Ward just wanted to keep stirring the pot, and play up the media manipulation and sound-bytes at the same caliber as say…, Karl Rove. Going after his former boss implying he was manipulative and deceptive in order to gain personal power, who by all accounts is one of the most repected GM’s in the league, was also WAY over the line – and moreso “on camera”.

And I’m not sure it was all just fun and kidding. The stakes are pretty high for these guys.

Just my opinion.

by Carolyn Christians on May 14, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure who it was on 99.9, but they played the A-Ward clip and then just started bleating like sheep… Baaahhhh
It was pretty funny. And a pretty stupid thing for Ward to say.

Thanks for getting me to go back and check it out. Super job – though maybe a little too nice. I can’t imagine their guys apologizing for their uncalled hits on Staal and his team. We are definitely the classier fanbase (and I think the Bruins fans would be happy to give us that title)

by Carolyn Christians on May 14, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

This is too funny.

Humor really is lost on you.

Honestly, I thought both were witty, and creative.

by 13_Legion on May 14, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup, a bunch of redneck jokes. We never get that. Complaining about trolls in a post that is one giant troll of the Canes fan base. Really witty and creative.

by Iggy Reilly on May 14, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

The violin is playing.

I’ve been on other forums where we just get called scum liberals, so I guess it washes out.

by 13_Legion on May 14, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I am not gonna lose any sleep over this.
He is free to write whatever he wants, and I am free to say it was pretty lame.

Did anyone imply that you weren’t allowed to like/watch hockey because of it? No? The canes fanbase gets shit on constantly.

by Iggy Reilly on May 14, 2009 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I honestly don't know why to be honest.

It’s been proven to be successful as a franchise and organization.

However, Carolina just gets lumped in with the rest of the disasters of Southern expansion.

On a selfish level, I think it’d be awesome if this team was still in Hartford, and had this level of skill, especially after this drama, next year would make for a powerful rivalry.

by 13_Legion on May 14, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

It is easy to do really, pretty simple. Even the fans who have heard all of the lame southern hockey jokes before get angry at first when they read something to that effect. A hockey writer in Edmonton isn’t gonna catch any flack for it because noone there is gonna stand up for the fact that the Canes aren’t a joke of a franchise.

by Iggy Reilly on May 14, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

That last point is an interesting one. It seems to me that one of the reasons hockey is still a difficult sell in some places is lack of local rivalries. Why is college BB so huge in NC? Because we have so many great BB schools in a very small radius. Now, DC is only 4 or so hours away, and I consider the Caps a decent Southeast rival, but it’s nothing like having fans of Duke, UNC, NC State, Wake Forest, etc. all in close proximity. That really fans the flames and raises the interest level.

by hip_check on May 14, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

True to a degree.

But Carolina is still a newer team.

A real rivalry can be created over decades. Montreal is our biggest rival, and the city is an 8 hour drive away.

With more years, the rivalries will grow.

Also if you and Washington have some strong teams over the next couple years.

by 13_Legion on May 14, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

…and meet in the playoffs. I know Carolina is not especially well liked in New Jersey, but it’s probably too far.

Yeah who knows, I thought it was a neat idea for a post. Made for great back-and-forth.

by hip_check on May 14, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not surprised you rubes don’t appreciate poetry. Just kidding. I thought it was done in a good-natured way. I thought you guys would have a good sense of humor about it. I guess I was wrong. I thought Canaic Jack’s response was pretty good. He obviously got it. For the most part, Canes fans have been great throughout this series and I even praised them in my game preview today.

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on May 14, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought it was pretty funny. There are some canes fans that really get too offended by the NASCAR and redneck stuff, but at times it does get old. What I get tired of hearing is the complaints from our fans on how the league doesn’t want a small market team in the playoffs, for me, that’s just as bad, if not worse, than all of the so called southern stereo types.

The Canes have been here 11 years now, and have proven themselves to be competitive on a pretty consistant basis. I’m only guessing the most of the Boston fans thought Carolina was gong to get swept like Montreal did. Now, here we are at game 7.

Just wish the game was on earlier…may have to call in sick if it goes into OT, but tomorrow is Friday, so a 3 day weekend…maybe

by kcljar on May 14, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t think it was going to be a sweep.

Grabovski didn’t take out your best defenseman and your goalie isn’t being broken by the local media/fans.

Honestly…… I don’t think anyone (except for Bary Melrose) expected the Hurricanes to hang w/ the Bruins at all….

There are no such things as “moral victories” in the playoffs….. but win or lose…. I’ll still be proud of our team…. They weren’t expected to beat New Jersey…. and they weren’t expected to even be able to skate on the same ice as the Bruins…..

Go ’Canes…..

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on May 14, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

The correct term is ‘goobers’ ;)

Seriously though, I think it’s just that people are a little on edge and nervous for tonight. With all the North v. South stuff, it’s easy take the trash-talking a little personally. What’s funny though is that this area of NC is full of transplants from the North (sometimes to the chagrin of the ‘true’ locals), and so the southern stereotypes often just don’t apply.

Oh....

Battle Hymn of the Republic isn’t a good way to rub it in then? ;)
