"Live Chat" at Noon
Cory and I will be on the blog during our lunch hour today holding a "Live Chat" from noon to 1PM. During the segment we will be answering questions, giving opinions, throwing out a few statistics, and just exchanging some general conversation about game 1 tonight, as well as the rest of the series. Fans from all teams are invited.

Good idea, although this time on game day I find myself not working for once and won’t be chilling on the blog all day.
Hi everyone (if there is anyone!). This is our first crack at this, so fire away.

have we seen any pics of Roddy yet?
How’s his face? I read he had some stitches and a shiner, and he skated. Sounds like he’s doing alright?

Rod does have a pretty bad shiner, but he was not wearing a face shield at practice and seems to be fine

I haven’t, but I’m guessing it won’t be as bad as Ruutu’s “welcome to the Canes” mask last year .. lol

Something along the line of “move your damn concert” and “suit Elmo up and hope he can bodycheck.”

Elmo vs Stomry would be worth seeing (actually I think I did say that at my kids learn-to-play practice last spring) I’d post a picture from my files if I knew how.

Defense
Babs or Frankie?
I’d like to see Babs get the confidence back and play a decent Defensive game, but more importantly, I want to see our Blueliners on the scoreboard. I think Babs laser shot would be great. And where is Corvo’s offensive when you need it? Granted, he was probably too tied up with shutting down Parise’s and Savard’s lines.
I’d start off with babs, but I think Mo will stick with Frank to start.

I heard from someone with connections in the lockerroom
Babs is pretty much done for the playoffs. The attitude has returned.

What’s your take on the pundits calling it for the Pens? Are we underestimating their scoring depth? Are we overestimating our D and G?
by Carolyn Christians on May 18, 2009 12:06 PM EDT reply actions
I don’t get people giving the Pens the edge in defense. Outside of Gonchar, who is hurt, I think the Canes are deeper and better. Gleason > Orpik, Corvo > Eaton or Scuderi
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions
But is Gleason + Corvo +Pits > 87 = 71?
by Carolyn Christians on May 18, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think they need to be better … they just need to contain them. Sid and Geno will get their points. You just can’t let them drop oodles on you like WSH (and their crap D) did
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions
No offense but I think you’ll be singing a different tune about Eaton and Scuderi after you watch them play.
They’re guys you over-look because they’re not flashy, but once you see them in a seven game series you realize how good they are….Which probably goes for a lot for the Canes defense too.
by Hooks Orpik on May 18, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions
your tag name makes it hard for many of us to want to respond you I think
by Carolyn Christians on May 18, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions
I like Eaton and Scuderi … but I don’t expect Eaton to continue his point pace and Scuderi, we can all agree, is no Chara when it comes to stopping Eric Staal
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Scuderi was a large part of holding Jeff Carter (46 regular season goals) to 1 goal the entire series against the Flyers.
And Ovechkin only scored 1 goal at even strength (that wasn’t a crazy bounce while Fleury was out of the crease) while matched up against Scuderi/Hal Gill.
No offense to Eric Staal, but shutting down big guns is what Scuderi’s done this playoff so far.
by Hooks Orpik on May 18, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions
So he is a Norris finalist like Chara?
You’re about to find out…
by Hooks Orpik on May 18, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Just sayin, Staal has already seen some defensive t alent this post season.
by Iggy Reilly on May 18, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions
However talented Scuderi is, he is certainly missing one thing Chara has. A 12 foot long stick.

by Carolyn Christians on May 18, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions
that’s my thinking…. plus the Canes aren’t that overmatched up front as many would have you believe.
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I don’t get it. Its like the hockey media world has totally ignored the Canes previous two rounds.

Also HUGE advantage Canes in net. Bylsma said this weekend he didn’t know why some didn’t have confidence in MAF. For one, he’s easily rattled …
If Fleury’s playing well, he’s awesome. He had some great games against Philly and looked good early in Game 7 against Washington.
Fleury’s problem has been consistency. For every awesome game, sometimes he’ll throw a 21 save on 25 shot effort out there.
Ward definitely is more steady, but when Fleury is in “the zone” he’s just as capable as any goalie. The big question, to me, is, how consistent will MAF be?
by Hooks Orpik on May 18, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions
agree totally… immensely talented, but one bad goal and can send him in a downward spiral
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I have always called him “a total headcase” much to the chagrin of my Pens friends.
by Iggy Reilly on May 18, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think that’s unfair….Goalies are nutty anyways.
If I was a bigger stat guru I’d love to see Fleury’s record when he gives up a goal in the first 25 minutes versus if he blanks the opponent for the opening 25 minutes.
If he gets over the initial hump and seems sharp, he’s very very good. If he lets in a goal early (especially if it’s weak) then hold on for the ride.

GM of CanesCountry.com
Hello from Pensburgh
I haven’t really seen to much of Carolina’s lines?
Will Walker be with Eric Staal?
Any guess of exact lines for your forwards would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, to recpirocate, here’s what the Pens will probably look like if they decide to dress 12 forwards:
Kunitz-Crosby-Guerin
Fedotenko-Malkin-Talbot/Satan
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Dupuis-Adams-Satan/Talbot
Gonchar-Orpik
Gill-Scuderi
Eaton-Letang
(If Gonchar isn’t 100% but can still play, they’ll scratch Dupuis and add defenseman Philippe Boucher and the lines will all go to hell trying to figure it out)
I think our lines get switched too much to say for sure what the lines will be…. Everyone plays w/ everyone…

Cullen-LaRose-Cole

the Canes have come out flat for both previous first games, will be interesting if they look better tonight
GM of CanesCountry.com
Indeed they have, I am hoping they have learned their lesson and won’t get behind the 8 ball in this series.
by Iggy Reilly on May 18, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m afraid that deep-down they like it behind the 8 ball. That could cost them.

I think there is a natural let down after winning a gut-wrenching game 7. Hopefully they can focus better tonight.
GM of CanesCountry.com
I think they've proven...
That adjustments are usually made to problem areas. Now that there’s a Game 1 trend to be flat, they will probably come out fast (crosses fingers).
Love, love, love the Canes!
Anyone notice three of four remaining coaches were in-season replacements? Only Babcock started the season as head coach (tho Quenville was an adviser in Chicago before taking over).
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:18 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah, I would say you might as well not consider Q a replacement. Remember the awkward pre-season press conference announcing Q was working for the team? They normally don’t do that for “advisers”
by Iggy Reilly on May 18, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions
they don’t normally put the associate coach on the jumbrotron either, but I don’t think Francis will be replacing Mo next year ;)

seems like Maurice and Bylsma missed the boat on the Adam nomination. Plenty to show, just too late.

Will our talented yet inconsistent players break out this series?
We’ve already had guys like LaRose and Jokinen light it up. Even Samsonov turned it on against the Bruins. But when will Cullen and Cole finally do something???
Also, do you believe Samsonov can keep it going?
I don’t know … Cole’s game has been OK, but he really hasn’t sniffed the net. He also doesn’t have a mission (hit Chara) like last series, and hopefully he doesn’t let Orpik being on the other side move him away from his job.
I’d like to see Cullen get some time back on the point of the PP, like in 06. That might get him going.
Sergei will be fine if his confidence stays up … right now he has to be feeling pretty good.
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Ruutu needs to start shooting more, too … his release is so good that he should take a few more chances just wristing one at the net.
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions
understandable
we have so much depth even the Caniacs can’t keep track of them all
by Carolyn Christians on May 18, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Mr. Ruutu may have the mission
of tattooing #87 at every opportunity.
by DidJussiThat? on May 18, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
I also expect to see Cole on the scoresheet more often this series. If not scoring goals, then getting assists. Before long, he might be on back Staal’s line and they might connect like they did at the last part of the season. Jersey and Boston did a great job of bottling them up but I think the Pens are more wide open and will allow them more room.
GM of CanesCountry.com
How good are the Pens wingers?
We know they are formidable up the middle on all three big lines, but what about the wingers? Do they have any the caliber of the Canes wings?
Satan is on the way downside.
Guerin is solid, though, and has loads of experience.
by DidJussiThat? on May 18, 2009 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Kunitz was a great pickup. The fact they got him and a great prospect (possible Ryan Malone replacement Eric Tangradi) for Whitney was a coup. Don’t forget Guerin, either. Max Talbot is a joy to watch … kind of guy you want on your team.
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions
If I may toss an answer out….Chris Kunitz is throwing big hits and has 7 assists, he looks good dishing the puck but he hasn’t found the back of the net.
With 5 playoff goals Bill Guerin is still kickin.
Ruslan Fedotenko has been the pleasant surprise for Pittsburgh wingers…He scored 3 goals and 2 assists in the Washington series and is really playing well write now.
Matt Cooke is an annoyance and Tyler Kennedy works hard but it doesn’t always go in.
That’s about it for Pittsburgh’s wingers, the team is really built down the middle and for defense (Gonchar, Letang) to chip in on the PP.
by Hooks Orpik on May 18, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions
If your defenders pinch a lot,

Can we control Crosby in front of our net?
A lot of Crosby’s goals in the playoffs have been garbage clean up in front of the net and alot of the goals against us ave been the same (see Savard and Lucic goals). Can we keep Crosby from killing us there? I think Ward can handle nearly everything else.
Also, please tell me Brind’amour and Crosby aren’t going to be on the ice at the same time.
Crosby has the best hands in hockey … he deflects shots from every angle.
I wouldn’t doubt Roddy … you’re not going to out-work Crosby, but some veteran guile could go a long way.
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, Roddy didn’t look to great defensively around the net in Game 7.
by Iggy Reilly on May 18, 2009 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions
stopping Crosby will be a team effort, though. I’m sure Rod has some tricks up his sleeve … plus he’s still the game’s best faceoff guy.
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Rod’s minutes have gone down. i was very surprised he was not taking key faceoffs at the end of the Bruins game. Maurice sent out Cullen
GM of CanesCountry.com

Speaking of facefoffs...
With Roddy’s minutes in decline i feel like we really struggled on the faceoff against the Bruins and it took away alot of offensive momentum. Will this be a key in the Pens series?
Who are their best faceoff winners compared to ours?
Jokinen’s work on faceoffs has been a plus and Cullen, like I said, cn get hot. That’s still Eric Staal’s biggest weakness.

Pan — Crosby is now over a 50% faceoff guy and takes a lot of draws.
Usually the Pens will have Talbot take Malkin’s faceoffs, because Geno is not that good at draws.
J. Staal takes some faceoffs too and has improved each and every year.
Your old buddy Craig Adams may take the occasional faceoff.
But mainly it’s gonna be Crosby, Staal and either Talbot or Malkin.

We’ve come a long from the N&O not even covering road games a few months back. Now they have TWO reporters traveling.

did you see the Scott Walker poster on high quality paper in the N&O today? Apparently ply-off hockey is profitable for them.

it really is much bigger locally than it ever was. Everywhere you go now, people are talking about the Canes. It’s great
GM of CanesCountry.com
I managed to convince 8 people who aren’t big Canes fans at all to come out and watch the game tonight. Kegs of homebrew also probably helped, but a couple of them have really gotten into this run. Full of drama for sure.

I’m not in the Raleigh area, I’m more in the gboro area.

I live out in the cut in northern guilford county. not actually in gboro.

Some people like to gripe about fair weather fans….. But isn’t that how a “non-hockey market” BECAME a hockey-market here in NC????

ANd us long-time caniacs can now hold the center of attention in many conversations now. I amazed people with obscure Staal trivia like there are 4 of them in the NHL and they grew up on a sod farm in Thunder Bay. There are evidently people in Raleigh who don’t that.

People see my beard and now ask if it’s a playoff beard. That didn’t happen when I grew it in 2006

It’s kinda neat how awareness has picked up this year…

So, anyone have guesses for tonight? The series?
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 12:57 PM EDT reply actions
Canes lose tonight. THey win the series in 6.
by Carolyn Christians on May 18, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Obviously the Pens are going to win tonight, but I say Canes in 6 for the series.
Still not a crook!
wonder who the next unforeseen hero will be for the Canes First was Jokinen, then Walker

Maybe Joe will start shooting again…

this has probably been answered, but is kaberle’s named written in ink for this series? we certainly cant afforc defensive mistakes against this team
Still not a crook!
definitely not … if the Canes begin to struggle that would be the first change (outside of line changes) I’d expect.
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions
by all accounts, yes … no reason to make a change for tonight, I’d think
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions
I predict the canes come out flat again tonight…
And like someone else said, I think they prefer to be behind the 8 ball…

Don't we have Boychuck and Sutter on reserve?
Wouldn’t you prefer them to come in instead of Helminen? What about Bowman?
I think that’d be asking a bit much … Helminen, Conboy, Dwyer and Ryan would probably all play before the two rookies.
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions
also, Helminen is a very good defensive forward … he was CCHA defensive forward of the year when he was at Univ. of Michigan.

Suppose you’re right. I’m really looking forward to what these young guys can bring to the table though. Brind’amour is on the back end and Cole is coming short of expectations. It’s about time we reloaded with young talent if we want to have staying power.
Next year will be very interesting up front and on D. Boychuk will try and win a spot, as will Sutter. I think Bowman will start in Albany but could earn a callup. The D situation is very intriguing. You could argue that Rodney, Borer, Carson and McBain are NHL ready.
I expect McBain to spend a full year with the Rats, but Rodney has been all but assured a roster spot by JR, and Carson could step in for Wallin if he’s bought out (they’d save money buying out Wallin and playing Carson over keeping Wallin for a year) … with Kaberle a buyout candidate as well, Seids a UFA and Babchuk up in the air (I think he might get dealt), there could be room for the youngsters if they want.

Who do you see being better?
Of our three offensive prospects Bowman, Boychuck, and Sutter. Who do you see being better?
Zac’s intriguing … many wondered if his numbers from the BCHL would translate to he NCAA. They have.
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
yes … Boychuk. Though I think Bowman might have the highest ceiling. They were saying after his first rookie camp that his shot was already NHL ready, and he’s a little bigger than Boychuk. Sutter will be a good defensive center, maybe score 15, possibly 20, in his best years.

yeah, the guy who is ESPN's hockey "analyst"
Every week “The ________ just have too much for the Canes, who really don’t belong in this series.”
Guy should be reading high school baseball scores on AM radio.

I've actually posted that
actually something very close but longer on many “mainstream” media blogs.
I always seem to get low scores or negative reactions from it.
Go figure.

both could be bought out and replaced by a rookie (Carson, Borer, McBain, Rodney) and save the team cash. I think that will def. happen to Kaberle. Wallin may stick for sentimental reasons.
by Cory Lavalette on May 18, 2009 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Wallin and family like it here
as does Kaberle but both may reaching the end of their careers.
Wallin though I think has more years in him than Kaberle who never fully recovered after shoulder surgery but not from a lack of trying on his part, again IMHO

I don’t think they’ll do anything in the FA market … a lot depends on what they do with Jussi, Babchuk and Ruutu. I think Cole will either be gone or back at around half price ($2M). But with the young guys close to NHL ready, I think they’d like to use as many of them as they can. Maybe keep Jussi and Ruutu, perhaps Cole, let Seids walk and deal Babchuk’s rights.

Do you expect Brind'amour to retire after the season?
If so, how much money would that save us?
This is reposted from above.
Capwise, nothing. Because the contract was on the books for Rod’s 35th b-day, it all counts against the cap. That being said, the Canes don’t spend up to the cap, so it would save them cash.
I think he’ll be back … he was playing well down the stretch and I’m pretty sure there are some “lower body” issues right now.

Is okay.
I was on the site earlier and didn’t see the announcement. I can’t do the live game thread because the computer’s not in the same room as the t.v. I’ll catch up to y’all one day!
Love, love, love the Canes!
