Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Hurricanes Newsstand — May 20

Normally, it'd be game day, but the NHL's wonky postseason schedule has the Canes and Pens taking two days off before resuming the Eastern Conference Finals. With a sloppy Game 1 over, the talk has been about officiating and potential bias instead of matchups and momentum.

Surely all parties are hoping for a more consistent effort from the men in black and white Thursday, but for today the talk will still be about them, along with a couple of injuries.

I think the Luke DeCock piece on conspiracy-theorists goes well with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s piece on hypocricy regarding 2 the knee-on-knee hits the Pens have been part of. Both articles are contrarian to their local rabid fanbase but are also pretty truthful and balanced.

Hopefully by Friday morning, we can spend more time talking about the players and the game of hockey as played between the whistles, and less jawwing about the refs and NHL officiating.

good post

It’s my job to detect patterns and sometimes I can’t turn it off

As several of my co-workers are Pens fans, many of them friends of oneshade or another, it has been, er, interesting at work.

Things i found interesting in the article in the news and observer…you guys are the least penalized team in the NHL this year, but god forbid you get a call in a playoff game, all hell breaks loose. There is no conspiracy to get Crosby into the playoffs, have you seen Bettman, he looks like he had down syndrome, there is no way he could pull that off. And even if they did it would by McCreary and Ohallaran(probably spelled wrong) officiating.

by JasonGoPens on May 20, 2009 10:29 AM EDT reply actions

Scarry Bettman is a dummy!!!!!! We should never talk about him for he is not worth our time….

And that’s something EVERYONE can agree on….

BTW

The reason there is a 2 game gap is because the Boss is in town tonight in the burgh, you can’t be mad at the Boss, especially when you got 2 guys who would need an extra day to get healthy since they are so fragile.

It'd be funnier if it was the WWE

I caught a little bit of Mike and Mike on ESPN this morning. The NBA Denver Nuggets are in a conflict with the WWE cage matches in Denver’s arena Monday night. You can imagine the potential to play this up on Talk Radio. Hard to mix Springsteen and Hockey – but if anyone has some good visuals, please share!

by Carolyn Christians on May 20, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I wonder if the boss played “The Rising” for his encore…..

by Mateos_Canes_Lamp on May 20, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I know why there’s a gap … but they could’ve started the Canes-Pens series on the weekend instead and avoided it. Not looking forward to the bad ice again. It looked soft in Game 1 and won’t be better with a concert going on the over the ice.

I think you’d be hard pressed to find any hockey player who enjoys playing on sub-par ice.

by pancanbra on May 20, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

it was a joke referring to a Seinfeld episode i guess you didn’t get it.

by JasonGoPens on May 20, 2009 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

can’t be that fragile … Eric Staal has missed one game in his NHL career, while Sid has missed blocks of games the past two.

by Cory Lavalette on May 20, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Fragile?

I wouldn’t call Gonchar that.

Crosby, maybe but since there seems to be a “Do not touch” aura around him, we may never know.

Hey, you started it.

Are you going to drop it?

I’d go further about the fragile thing but I think Cory summed it up nicely. As for Cole though, I will say that your boy Orpik should know pretty well how fragile a spine is. Not that he’ll care unless, God forbid, it happens to him.

by pancanbra on May 20, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Orpik got his face rocked last game, i’m sure there is more in store for him and i’m sure he knows it.

Nah, not a troll, just trying to spark up some fan rivalry since we have none. Actually we have nothing at all, no previous playoffs even dating back to the Hartford days. Like Lowe’s slogan let’s build something together.

by JasonGoPens on May 20, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, it certainly seems like trolling. I would say there are less sore spots (what a pun) that you could poke than the players who were just injured by arguably dirty plays.

My thoughts exactly. Though I think it’s a little early to try and force the rivalry. As we’ve learned in the last 2 series, they seem to happen all by themselves. Patience.

by Carolyn Christians on May 20, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Good god no i would never talk about that wretched…sport? well they call it a sport, not sure how that got approved by the committee.
Pittsburgh dosen’t even have a track, we could care less about nascar, what would make you think i would talk about that, that’s a southern thing.

by JasonGoPens on May 20, 2009 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Just go back and see the discourse from the Boston B’s blogs when they found out they were playing a team from Carolina. Typical provincial New Englanders – and lazy journalism too.

Another reason it was very sweet to see Scotty Walker put it in the net last Thursday.

Rivalry is fine, but let’s keep it civil. On the internet it’s easy for good-natured ribbing to degenrate into ugliness.

Thanks for the link. You can listen to 99.9 with Mike M, live from Pittsburgh over your computer if you go to the WRAL.com sportspage and select the Play link at the top right of the banner. They’re talking about it next.

It looks like Brindy is moving to the 3rd line...

…with Samsonov and Eaves. We’ll see what he does with the added ice time. He can still really help this club but his lack of speed and uncanny mistakes have really hurt this club this year. It’ll be interesting to see what a slow Brindy can do with Samsonov and Eaves (two relatively fast players). He still has really great passing vision and knows how to finish.

I think I like LaRose on Staals line more than Walker despite Game 7. LaRose has a wonderful ability to fight for a puck and keep it in the offensive zone, and he’s illustrated a good ability of springing Staal into some space. I also think Cullen playing with Jokinen will be a big plus. I think I’d rather see Samsonov on that line than Walker, but it really would be quite a finesse line.

Here’s hoping that hungry young guys like Dwyer and Helminen can cause some magic or at the very least generate some energy for the rest of the guys.

So the Poconos moved to the south when i was not looking?
“we” so you speak for all of Pittsburgh?

I dunno, the words You are using “fragile” wretched sport" will not spark a rivarly, it only fans the flames for trolling.

the poconos couldn’t be any farther from pittsburgh unless it was in new york…c’mon geography.
And yes i was voted the spokesperson for Pittsburgh, there will be a press conference today at 5pm, ESPN is picking it up.
