Ruutu and Cole Miss Practice

As expected, Tuomo Ruutu and Erik Cole were not on the ice at practice this morning in Pittsburgh.  I was listening to Mike Maniscalco at lunch and this news was confirmed.

Coach Mo seems to be keeping his options open.  Reportedly, Dwight Helminen, Tim Conboy, Mike Ryan, and Pat Dwyer all took turns on the fourth line with Ryan Bayda.  The top lines were also mixed a bit.

  • Staal, Whitney, LaRose
  • Cullen, Walker,Jokinen
  • Brind'Amour, Eaves, Samsonov
  • Conboy, Dwyer, Bayda, Helminen, Ryan

LaRose has had sucess playing with both Whitney and Staal before and Walker has done well with Cullen.  But the Canes would be missing their two best forecheckers without Cole and Ruutu.  Still, they can win if the above players do their jobs.

Just need to wait and see, it seems.

PITTSBURGH — Officially, the status of forwards Erik Cole and Tuomo Ruutu for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals is “day to day” and a “game-time decision.”
That’s what Canes coach Paul Maurice said today after the team practice at Mellon Arena.
But the word from the Hurricanes camp is that Ruutu will not play against the Penguins on Thursday night and there’s a chance Cole could. Ruutu suffered an injured right ankle and Cole still feeling the effects from his knee-to-knee hit from the Penguins Matt Cooke in Game 1.
“We’ll make an assessment tomorrow morning,” Maurice said. "They may skate and they may not. We’ll let our trainer (Pete Friesen) make that decision for them and then they’ll both be game-time decisions.
“It could have been worse, I guess. We move forward positively.”

This really just sucks! Cole I can live without but Ruuuu we need him in there.

Outside of the occasional good body check, Patrick Eaves has been a big-time dissapointment this season. I would almost rather take a risk and try out Boychuk/Bowman in the top nine than have Eaves up there.

Then again, there’s a reason why I’m not a coach.

Should be “interesting”.

You better not talk about Eaves or be ready for CORY………….

LaRose has been really impressive to me. Pittsburgh sports show talked at length today about his play and how it surprised them. No surprise to me that he was good, but I think he really stepped it up a notch…

I guess they aren’t considering playing Brandon Sutter??

by Canes12 on May 20, 2009 5:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He’d be in way over his head. Sutter will be a good player down the road, but I would much rather have conboy and dwyer out there now.

Still not a crook!

Glad to see Rosie on the first line, although I am not sure he’ll have the same chemistry that he and Cully have got going. Cullen/WalkerJokinen, that could be interesting. It really sucks losing Cole & Ruu(if in fact they are “OUT”), will definitely be looking for the others to step up their game, they have to. :(

I think Rosie gets the first line nod because he is the best hitting/forechecking forward we have now… Eaves can make some nice hits from time to time… but he needs to step it up BIG TIME now.

Time for Larose to up his stock even more….

He’s gonna hustle his ass right out of Carolina. Maybe we can keep him if JR opens the wallet just a little more…..

its gonna be sad to see him go… but I love how he is getting there!! I just dont see anyway we can afford him. I will forever be a Chad fan.(Larose… definatly not that douche in the Alltell commercials)
